The paint is original and would be hard to duplicate.
I wonder if you could contact Starrett Co. and find out what the paint color formula is? Or maybe a paint shop that has people there that can create custom colors from a sample (I have a hard time with that one).

Very nice vise but they won't sell it to me.
That's too bad. Did you say to them: "You should get rid of that worthless piece of scrap metal, I'll be glad to haul it off for you"?:bounce:

That is a "Speckle" Paint, and you can get it again (Or could a couple of years ago), but probably not in that shade of blue. I've seen it in the "decorator" rattle can racks. All these seem to go through cycles, for popularity. Speckle (I have my Dad;s old "C" reloading press in green/white, and I had furniture my parents repainted in the late fifties in black w/white speckles) Hammer tone is popular right now, and wrinkle paint which appears to be out of fashion as you can't hardly find it anywhere easily. A few years ago getting paint to simulate rock was a big fashion.

 Thanks for the 'you *****' on the Reed, I really appreciate it!

I got it all the way apart and have begun cleaning it. It's a filthy mess. I'll post progress pics as I go along.

demoman: I hear you on that. I often dream of finding cool stuff at the junkyards (car stuff) and have always wanted to get into this scrap metal yard but my schedule and theirs is rather conflicting. Now every time I can go I will expect to find a vise (or at least something cool)!

Did a quick Google search for "Wilton 1755 vise parts" and found this website. Don't know anything about them / have never used them but might be worth checking them out.

http://www.ereplacementparts.com/wi...adesman-vise-parts-c-32774_155485_155601.html

Screen shot shows the 1755 end cap as part of the End Piece Assembly W/ Two Pins (figure 5). If it's like my 9450, the end cap is a light press fit into the end of the static jaw.

Thanks, you must be better at Google than me. I,simply typed Wilton 1755 end cap and got nothing. I did find the exploded parts diagram on Graingers site but no pic of the cap. That part says its for 1998 and later. I think mine is older than that but have yet to figure out the manufacture date. Being new to vises and never having one apart, I have no idea where that other piece to the right goes. All I have to go off of is this pic of the end of mine.

Does it just press into the gap between the outer and first inner lip?

This forum has messed me up in so many (not bad) ways. from a few pages ago, you can see an example of a stand made out of a semi-truck drum and a pipe, and I have been meaning to do something like that for a while. So I finally had the time to visit the scrap metal yard here in town for the first time ever earlier this week. I found a few things, and also saw some semi-truck brake discs and have been contemplating whether or not that would work better than a brake drum. So I went back to the scrap metal yard yesterday and noticed that this must be a very busy yard, because I only saw a few things that I recognized from just a few days earlier, and much stuff had been cleared out. There was the remnants of an old AutoCar truck that caught my eye, so I walked over to it to check it out. When I looked down, I saw a pretty "nice" looking brake disc and then figured I would walk around the yard some more before deciding about getting it. After walking a while, I went back to the front of the truck, saw the disc setting on the pile, then noticed something that caught my eye. Something that looked like the bar of a vise, with a rounded ball end. It was like slow motion, but my eyes followed the shape and then I could not believe what I saw half buried in the dirt/scrap metal pile. After I drug it out, I saw it was a Reed 106! Holy cr@p, I though this stuff only happened to others on the forum, and I was never expecting to find anything like that......ever. Anyway, I dug it out, made sure it did not look like it had been destroyed by the heavy machinery at the scrap yard, tried turning the handle (it did move, pretty well considering the condition it was in), then figured how to drag this monster about the length of a football field to the front counter to pay for it. I carried it slowly and painfully, and managed to get some help about 3/4 of the way to the scale. It weighed in at 135 pounds, and I had to pay $26 for it. I gleefully handed over the cash and loaded it in my car. Got it home, unloaded it, and have just really begun to get it apart for further cleaning. Everything came apart fairly easily considering the quantity of gunky build up on it. Looking forward to getting this one cleaned up and put back together. Does anyone know how to get the ball ends off the bar handle? The bar is really bent and I'd like to straighten it. Enjoy the pics.

Nce find, I have it's fraternal twin, a swivel base Reed 206 I paid $120 for.

Likely you will be able to drive that pin out from the bottom of the vise. Sometimes the hole gets real crudded up and makes it difficult to see, but it's likely there. Good luck and let us know how you make out!

Thanks Dave! i didn't want to try that and find out its threaded!!!

Very, very unlikely that it's threaded...

...but I will tell you that I restored an old Athol vise and had my machinist friend thread that very same feature so I could have it be more secure. So you never know!

It would not have been threaded originally for sure.

Hello again friends,

I picked up this American Scale #75H yesterday. It weighs 60 lbs., has 3.5" jaws, has a jaw depth of 3.5", swivel base and a pivoting stationary jaw.

1. Do you guys think that $100.00 was too much for it?

Hey Mark,
I am a little late to this, but I think that vise is great and would have paid $100 for it. Can't wait to see it cleaned up!

Anyone ever seen a veit young vise before. Says made in USA. Here is one on CL:confused:

Saw it, but they are asking WAYYYYYYYY TOOOO MUCHHHH:shocking::shocking:!!!!

One cool thing was I grew up not too far from Huntington Valley. Still "crack head" priced at $600.
I think I've seen this style on the site before. Hell, it's probably in this exact thread amongst the hundreds of pages.

My search for a used vise to show some TLC to has intensified since I missed out on the Columban at $25. Here is a possible Record No.3 at $35. Pictures are fuzzy...am I off base here?
http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-acheter-et-vendre-outils-outils-a-main-etau-W0QQAdIdZ461621962

This one looks like it needs more than TLC, but priced for clearance at $10 http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-acheter-et-vendre-outils-outils-a-main-Etau-W0QQAdIdZ457448949

The $20 in gas to get there might influence the decision, but I suppose I can't go too wrong unless it is seized solid.

They are located about 25km+ from home, but I don't want my hopes up to be dashed by my ignorance :)

I am 98% sure that first one is a Record, way better than that Columbian utility vise. Get it before I take a 2000 mile trip to pick it up LOL.

Have a vise just like it and there should be a hole in the bottom you can insert a punch in and drive the pin out.

Now for something different from all of these Wilton vises. :).
I picked this up a while ago.
I have only seen a few on here.
This is a Sheldon woodworkers combination vise. Weights at least 35 lbs.
Originally a Jack Olsen green color, sprayed it forest green instead.
This one probably dates to late 80's or early 90's, although it was patented and produced much earlier.
Still need to make the wooden jaw inserts. The metal insert jaws were in great shape.
This vise was pulled out of the mud and snow where the PO had thrown it.

Dude, that is a nice one. I did not know Willy bullets were made with a swivel jaw. What size is the jaw on that and when was it made?

(don't laugh at me Nick) Cheers, Bill

I've got a quick value question. Found a Reed 103R in very good shape. The guy said he wants $85 for it. I feel that is probably fair considering what a new vise cost, but more than I want to pay. Does $65 sound fair or am I still way off?

To find the date, unscrew the moveable jaw all the way. Turn it over and the date will be stamped into the long keyway on the bottom of the round shaft. Bill

85 is kinda high. For that much you could buy one on e-bay and have it delivered. However, if you can afford it and you want it then who cares. As you said it's cheaper than of new vise of similar quality.

My opinion: If you needed it for your collection or you need a good vise for your own work, I think 85 is fair. If you are looking to flip a vise then it's not worth it. Keep in mind what kind of new vise you get for 85.

That's ok Bill. These swivel back Wiltons have me guessing also. They are about the same age as your older 9450. The hexagonal base on the swivel handles date it possibly into the early 60's. and the 4 1/4W X 1"H jaw Wilton did away with in1975
Brax..That one is definitely one for the collection.

i was just giving it a really close look and (i think) i see the remnants of black. i'm all about originality but i have to admit the idea of dark maroon is intriguing.

My C0 restoration is nearly there, all is left is to make the handle. Not sure on which route exactly to go with this (make a new one from scratch or make new end for current one), any opinions?

PS. Thanks Autopts for the stickers, they finished of the resto great!

I need one of those swivel jaw Wiltons...

Now, the big question, what would the model number be???

HMMM...

And where would one be???

I feel that they are rarer than rocking horse manure...
