We got a new Snap On 1/2" drive TechWrench at work, only a month old and not used heavily. Suddenly it stopped returning to zero and it will only read out the preset torque level on the display.

Any one seen this before? Am I just in a wrong mode or something. The manual didn't say anything about any different modes.

I just can't believe something could be wrong with this thing already.

you using it on the degrees mode im assumings? if so i had same thing happen to me if im understanding what your saying right.

once you reach your preset torque angle and move on to the next bolt it doesnt return to 0.

if i remember right once your done torquing the bolt it should display what the in-lbs is/was and then when you move on to the next bolt it should reset. does yours show the in-lbs? or does it stay on the torque degree #?
also have you tried to just torque the next bolt anyways. when mine wouldnt reset i just went ahead and started torquing the next bolt anyways and it reset back to 0 just not how it would reset right away like i thought it did out of the box.

our shop had one for a while, and it was a pain in the *** to use, fussy about EVERYTHING. I used it for both torque and angle measurements, I decided I dont like electronic torque wrenches, but thats just my opinion with one wrench..it is a great idea, but it seems to lack reliability, and ease of use.

Just reading these posts now. Honestly, I didn't even know it had a torque angle mode. But it is reading in ft-lb or Nm, not any degrees.

If I go to torque the next bolt it seems to work BUT, I work in R&D so we are using it to check breakaway tightening torques to make sure bolts are being torqued correctly and staying that way. So I need it to go back to zero and then show the max torque. It used to do that and then it just stopped going back to zero.

Actually this is the 2nd TechWrench that has done this.
Is there a better quality electronic wrench out there?

so your using it in the opisite direction? To loosen bolts? I rember flipping through the manual
And seeing something about not using it in the reverse direction.is it red or gray? The red is a tech wrench and the gray is considered the angle wrench, I have the grey angle wrench. It's my personal favorite, mine never shows zero. It only shows the setting I set it then as I start to torque it how's a low number starting to rise until I get close to the set number, then the max torque reached flashes then stays.after a while it'll go back to the setting or I push the I button and it'll show the setting.lets say I set it to 20ft lbs it will show 20, once I put it on the bolt and torque it shows a lower number like 9 and rises to 20 then vibrates and buzzes.once I back off 20.6 or what ever will flash then display as max torque reached.once I go to the next bolt the number will drop and rise back to 20 as I torque. If I want the max torque reached to disappear and show the torque setting I hit the I button.thats how mine works, I don't recall ever seeing a zero while torquing.

Some things shouldn't be electronic and a torque wrench is one of them.

+10^1000

i worked in the engineering dept of HiShear an aerospace fastener company
Louie Ecker ran the lab, he was previously the Chief Metallurgist for North American Aviation for 28 years
he was responsible for the metallurgy on the;
P-51
F-86
F-100
F-107
X-15
B-70
and everything in between

he was one of my mentors......since i was 5

guaranteed Louie is rolling over in his grave about these electronic torque wrenches

and the torque+X degrees BS, what a stupid idea

yes, in '65 Bob Taylor built an electronic torque wrench in the lab.......the strain gauges didn't do well against the calibration machine

it uses certified weights on a measured beam:thumbup:

That is how they work. They don't go back to zero unless you set it at zero to start with, which doesn't make any sense. It shows the torque you want to apply and when you start to tighten it shows the torque applied as you go.

No, I am not using it in the opposite direction. I am measureing tightening torques. A tightening torque is more representative of the actual torque level than loosening torques.

I could swear this thing went back to zero. Maybe i should put the setting at zero and try it.

The introduction of batteries and software into hand tools was a real mistake, in my opinion.
