ok so i build a off road trailer to be pulled behind my polaris ranger 900, it is an open trailer but can become ensloded. i want to wire it so i can have 4 outlets and a few lights ect, here is the real question, the generator i am buying (http://www.auroragenerators.com/gen...tors#!/~/product/category=3104304&id=13428540 ) and will be putting on the trailer somehow only has an automatic transfer switch no plugs, so how could i wire it so i can run it off the generator when it detects that it gets disconected from my gargae power via extention cable. any tips thanks

That link is to a 16kw whole house genset that weighs over 1600lbs! The 2013 ranger 900 has a max towing capacity of 2000lbs. Your going to go over your limit with a full fuel tank in the genset and the weight of the trailer.

If thats correct then dont even think of plugging that in in your garage. If the power goes out it will start automatically and if your sleeping it will probably kill you with CO poisoning!

Not sure why you want to haul around an enormous generator. Ones like that are typically mounted on a concrete pad.

You can wire it just like it would be wired at home. put a small subpanel in the trailer to run your outlets from and put a shore power connector off a boat/RV on it to hook the extension cord to. Just remember its going to run continuously if its not plugged into the house.

Thats still a 9kw 1250lb genset.

You can wire it up just like you would wire it at home. Put a small breaker panel in the trailer and wire the genset to it. That model does not appear to have a built in transfer switch. You may need to add an external automatic transfer switch if you want it to start automaticallly when you unplug it.

Call the manufacturer for how to wire it since you are using it for something other than its intended use. Typically the wire used to provide power from the house to the genset is the same wire that the generator uses to provide power to the house.

Also be aware that this genset is meant to be run out in the open. Running it in an enclosed trailer will gurantee it overheats due to lack of airflow for cooling.

I've gotta ask, what are you powering with this? that is a huge genset to be hauling around. do you intend to tow it out in the woods and power a remote off grid cabin?
I hope you have a sturdy trailer!

Also if you only want a few plugs and a couple lights why even get a genset that puts out 240v? I doubt you need 84a at 120v for a few plugs and lights in a trailer.

Just get a smaller genset with electric start and keep a battery maintainer on it when its not in use.

It will be powering a shed that has air compressors welders ect, also it will be an open trailer that i may build a top for (not covering the generatro) i am also custom building the trailer. i also want a silent generator

if i read the info page right then the unit doesn't come with a transfer switch. i don't really see the need for on on the unit it's self if your intent is just to pull it up to the shed and plug in. you will need to have a transfer switch at the shed if the shed already has power to it. if you want the generator to auto start on power failure to the shed then you will need to get an auto transfer switch and wire the start circuit per instructions.

Sounds kind of interesting . . . . OP says in original post it's for garage that may fall off grid power and wants ATS (automatic transfer switch) capability. But later this mobile genset will be for off-the-grid "shed" with welders & such. Running this genset all the time off-the-grid will be EXPENSIVE !!

Pulling it around behind Polaris . . . to obscure location that needs silent power . . . . and genset needs roof so can't be seen from above . . .
. . . . are we talking cannabis farming?? ;)

I think you would be further ahead getting a Miller Bobcat welding rig. These are much quieter than the home standby generators. I know because I have and use both.

I think you need to do more research. You know what you want, but obtaining it may be a bit more money than you planned.

So we went from 4 outlets and a few lights to a shed with a compressor and welder?

It would be cheaper to run a buried cable from your house to the shed to provide power And it would be totally silent.

Unless for some odd reason you prefer to do fab work miles from the nearest road and structure?

the shed is about a mile away from my house. so running conduit is not an option, its a 2 car grage but its a shed. kinda confusing

Just keeping you honest . . . LOL.

What all power demands will be made on genset??

How many hours a day do expect it to be running?? Gasoline or diesel??

Nah...Not pot farming...What would you need a genset way out in the middle of nowhere when you have all that beautiful sunshine...? lol

Get a genset that is designed to be portable. Your probably going to kill a whole house standby unit by dragging it over rough terrain. Especially if you wire it to run whenever disconnected from your home power.

Probably void any warranty as well. If they send a service tech out and he sees it mounted on a trailer instead of a solid slab they might have an issue.

Clearly not pot farming, it's a meth lab.

I was thinking a clandestine strip joint. All those colored lights and DJ equipment really ***** down the juice!

It has to be silent so it wont wake the wife late at night:lol_hitti
