Still looking for what those pipe jaws look like..

I'll see what i can do. I've got a Reed 2C next to my tool box but the inserts are a pain to remove.

If you are familiar with Wiltons, Reed pipe jaws are identical to 1st generation C1 pipe jaw inserts. They are nearly the same as the more current models but are fitted in place by dowel pins instead of spring clips.

Italian vise?

Anybody offer any insight into this vise? Seller says it's a 5 inch and at least 30yrs old. Italian made Super Leone

Google seems to be stumped as well.

I had heard the bottom of the slde but just didn't want to pull it out far enough to see.

I'll check.

The date stamped on that one may be the guarantee expiration date. I think it was something like five years from the date of manufacture. I don't know when they switched from stamping expectation date to manufacture date.

Does this look familiar to anyone? It just popped up on a local CL for $40, no name listed.

Just says "Made in USA 045"

Still looking for what those pipe jaws look like..

Here are a couple of pictures of the pipe jaws from my Athol 324 1/2x. There are two jaw inserts in the stationary side and one jaw insert in the moving side. the two stationary jaw inserts are 3/8" thick and the moving jaw insert is 1/2" thick. They all have detents for the set screws. The ruler is in the pictures so you can determine the measurement of the different sides. I assume that they're hardened.

I hope this will help you.

Ok, so I admit it...sorta. I MIGHT have been holding out on you guys...but just a little bit. :dunno:
It's been a busy season here in Ohio, and I have indeed found a few goodies. But it seems I rarely have time to post photos, etc, any more. Sorry.

Anyway, I had just made up my mind that that I would not buy any more small or medium-sized vises, before I headed out with my son to a local flea market last weekend. Then I spotted a mid-size vise sitting on a table, but was determined to ignore it. Yet something about it caught my eye. Did it have an original water-transfer decal still on it? I just couldn't resist, and walked closer. And there it was, staring me in the face.
ViseBlueGrassGJ1_zps2a69675d.jpg

It is the first Blue Grass branded vise I have ever found, and this one is in mint condition...possibly unused. I couldn't believe how nice and undisturbed that fragile old water-based decal was on the front.
ViseBlueGrassGJ2_zps22a23571.jpg

And there can be no doubt about someone having put a Blue Grass decal on some other vise. Look at the casting letters on the sides:
ViseBlueGrassGJ3_zps87b32637.jpg

ViseBlueGrassGJ4_zps06455485.jpg

The seller told me he had owned it for many years, but didn't ever need it, so it sat on his bench without ever being fastened down. That accounts for the beautiful condition.
ViseBlueGrassGJ6_zps6cd9527b.jpg

During my travels on the 127 Yard Sale, and other foraging trips through southern states like KY and TN, I have encountered several collectors who are avidly interested in Blue Grass branded tools. I hope they will like this one, as I don't plan to keep it. Notice how crisp the "teeth" of the jaws are! :eyecrazy:
ViseBlueGrassGJ5_zpsf9a6365b.jpg

Jaws are 4" wide, though it is clearly a light-to-medium duty vise. The seller's asking price....$25. I offered $20, and he thought about that for a while, but then accepted the offer. This was at the very first booth I visited at the show, but already I was heading back to the truck, to drop off my first "treasure."

Thanks..any pictures would help.

The Rock Island vise I am looking at is a ringer for the OLD Reed vises...and I think the vise is missing some of the pipe jaw inserts.

Hey all, I've been looking for an old USA made vise to replace my HF made in India POS for a long time, but there have been slim pickings in my part of the world. I finally scored one today. I may have overpaid at $75, but other than a couple of $400 Wilton's, this is the first good vice I have seen in probably a year of looking on CL. It is labeled "No 8 1/2." I have not been able to find any info on this specific model anywhere. It looks pre-war to me, but what do I know? No swivel base, and no removable jaws.

Thanks the info does help.

I am suspecting that the vise I am looking at is missing a couple of the vise jaws.

Looks like a Charles Parker to me. Nice vise and I think you did just fine at $75.

Thanks, it's worth $75 to me. I haven't weighed it, but it was probably more than $1 per lb.
It is definitely a Parker, but I have not seen another marked "no 8 1/2."

Upon further inspection I found a "33" stamped on the slide. Must be the year it was made?

Someone school me. After buying this 4" Wilton, I pulled the jaw out and cleaned the slide looking for a date, but to no avail. What does that tell you? I've looked for a date all over it and I get nothing.:dunno:

Hey I've got another CL find that I was wondering if anyone could identify. It isn't the best picture and there is no detailed description. But man, it sure looks BIG.

Not all of them are dated on the keyway. Most were but not all. If you post a profile picture of the jaw towers, members here should be able to give you a rough age estimate. They slightly changed the shape of the vise over the years. I would think yours is from the 1960s or so.

The guy was the original owner and never once swiveled the rear jaw. I'll take some better pictures tomorrow and get a date off the keyway.

bigcaddy, I hope you have extra heavy duty rear suspension with all this weight your picking up.

BigsSwivel_zps8158c798.jpg

This is a strange Wilton, yes, its not your every day bullet so you might say its rare however the strange part is that it never drew the roar of the crowd and its resale (at least on Ebay) isn't what one might think, but on the flip side. its a model that a true Wilton collector should have in his collection. I definitely want to see his Wilton after you dress it up. I've had 100's of Wilton's pass my way but never a swivel back. I've only seen those in 4 1/2" and made mostly in the 50's and 60's. Another notch on your bed post my man!!

People with one of these swivel backs, are they usable to hold akwardly shapped thing or just cool but not very practical? I need one of these in my collection..

So why would the jaw/head swivel on that Wilton? Is it really meant to swivel...or meant to be replacable with a different type of head?

I've never known a pivoting jaw vise with the purpose of replacing the jaw with another type. They're just made to handle an irregular shaped (or non-parallel)
object.

Picked up this Chicago Morgan 160 6" off of CL. It's USN surplus. Nothing broken just some dings and a bent spindle handle. One swivel base lock down handle was missing the other was pretzelled. I'll get some 3/8" 4130 cromo and fab a couple. It has semi-smooth jaws. Don't know about the later Morgan's but this beast has solid jaw horns. I took a brass wire wheel to it to get a better look. Got this 150 pounder for 40 cents/lb. This thing is a survivor.
