Slammer Hammer Vise Grip

This is not a new or innovative idea. I bought an import slide hammer set 25 years ago that has an adapter and bolt to screw into the handle of a pair of vise grips. I used it a couple of times and it worked as well as the vise grips could hold.

A few years ago I welded a nut which fits my slide hammer to the bolt on a pair of vise grips. Since that day the vise grips are the most used accessory for my slide hammer with the possible exception of a simple homemade seal hook. I originally intended to redo it in such a way as to put the jaws more in line with the direction of pull but it has worked for everything that I have attempted to use it for just as it is.

i used one today at work to pull a busted cv joint. all that was left was the cup section of the joint on the trans and the vise grips made quick work of it.

There are stainless ones made for surgical use called the OrthoVise. This is a link to where I came across it. Info is about halfway down the page. http://www.innomed.net/knee_tools_rongeurs.htm The adjusting bolt is just removed and replaced with a medical grade stainless slide hammer. Different sized locking pliers are available with different sized or weighted "slap hammers". Instead of riveting the pivot in the jaws, a bolt is used. The "slap hammer" can also be attached to that point in case you need to pull from the side. The slap hammers are also designed with a hammer plate in case extra force from a mallet is needed. Since it's for surgical use it's probably a fairly expensive setup. I'm surprised though that none of the expensive tool companies like Snap-On offer a set like this.
