I have 5 or 6 MAC ratchets, and I really love all of them. They are 30 tooth I believe but have been durable and smooth (especially with the permatex ) But I have found myself buying a couple snap on dual 80s lately because of the fine teeth. Even Matco has a 60 tooth 1/2" and other drives I guess. WTF is MAC or stanley I should say doing, shouldnt they be competing with SO? I know alot of yall don' like MAC, which is fine, this thread isnt a MAC bash, but why haven't they come out with something more up to date?

Not to further bash MAC... But what have they ever come up with that was innovative?

I'm sure they are at work on making a competitive ratchet, but they seem to follow the herd.

It would be interesting to know what S-O's R&D budget is compared to MAC and MATCO.

I was trying to remember who it was that got the Permatex and was going to try it; it was you! Cool! How do you like it? :)

About the ratchets - MAC does have some ultra fine tooth ratchets out now; they're the ones with the FACOM ratchet head and the MAC ergonomic rubber grip. :)

Good grief, another permatex person. One of these days I'll have to try some. I was just out in the garage playing with ratchets, and I really like the feel of the 60 tooth Danaher products. To be fair, I don't think Cornwell has 60+ tooth pearhead ratchets either, so MAC isn't alone. I can't believe that he engineering work behind a 60-80 tooth ratchet would be that tough...

Here's one that sold for $41.00 - it has the FACOM flex head. :)

I am dumb, I realized while permatexing my 1/2" that it is a 60 tooth. I really love this ratchet, but not crazy about the rubber grip. I am thinking of buying the one with the hard handle and switching out the gears, dunno if it will work though. The permatex did make a huge difference though.

Ok so i guess its a 52. Still very smooth and the lube made it very quiet.

I wouldn't be surprised if a few people shot you some offers on here for that ratchet.

The gears aren't interchangable. However, you could buy the Proto version off of ebay. It's the same ratchet with a red comfort grip handle.

I was all about selling it recently, but now that I know the hard handles are 30 tooth I might hang on to it. I am in the market for a long 1/2" 15" or so and a 10" but snap lacks any on the site at the moment with a handle :headscrat

Every listing says it's a 24 tooth too include Grainger and MSC catalogs but, it's not. It's a 52 tooth big dawg ratchet. I guess everyone keeps cutting and pasting the same wrong information.

+1. I have noticed this as well. Aside from that, I own the long Proto 1/2" ratchet in question and can tell you it is way more than 24 teeth. I also have the 3/8" long, 3/8" regular, and 1/4" regular all with the red grips. Very nice ratchets and can be had for reasonable price on eBay. I would recommend them to anyone. Especially if one is a fan of the MAC red hard handles.

I have a pair of Mac MR4C unit that I was rather disappointed with. One I bought new on the tool truck, and the other came in a eBay package sale. I broke the first one by trying to loosen a steel bolt in an aluminum intake manifold, thread 8 mm x 1.00.

Since I work nights and weekends and tool trucks don't come by my house, I bought a pair of T72s to take care of jobs that I do to pay the rent. After using them for a couple of weeks I find that I like them better than I like my Mac 1/4" drive Spin Flex units.

don't they still make the zero? it's a gearless supposed to be even smoother then a fine tooth. I haven't used one, but always wanted to pick one up.

I had the Mac gearless ratchets. Went through three 3/8" and three 1/4", none lasted longer than a couple of weeks before slipping and/or reversing themselves. Good idea, poor execution. I have also had a few of the Microtough 72 tooth ratchets. I love them, the fine teeth, the tiny head, but they don't last long im my hands either (and they seem to be notoriously weak). Now I just buy the EXACT same ratchet from Canadian Tire when it's on sale for $14.99cdn. They also have the Stanley Rotator labelled as Mastercraft too and it also goes on sale for 1/2 price.

Yep I had them and hated them. The 3/8 did fine, but the 1/4" was trash and reveresed itself, I was happy to get 60 bucks out of the pair when I soild them on Ebay. My 3/8" held up but I just couldnt get used to not hearing the gears.

Is 'permatexing' even a word??

It seems like permatexing is the hot new thing that is driving kids crazy. Like Hannah Montana.

Care to post links / pictures of these two ratchets for another fellow Canadian?

I had the Mac big dawg 52 tooth ratchet. VP10R or something like that. I wasn't much on it. I sold it for decent money, but it just didn't do it for me. I guess I'm crazy.

I have the Stanley precision series version of the Microtough ratchet in 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2. I have to say it is the smoothest ratchet that I have ever used. It is a LOT smoother than my Proto Big Dawg ratchets. I have never used a Snap On 80 tooth ratchet but I can not imagine it being any smoother. And the head is so small they can get into some really tight spots.
