Midway Through My Garage Overhaul

New member here, who's hoping The Garage Journal can help inspire me to finish the job. My journey started 2 months ago, before I knew about this site. Basically, I was fed up with having an over stuffed 2 car garage, that could barely fit a single car in it. I had stuff all over the ground, including bikes, lawnmower, buckets, kid's toys, tools, and all the random stuff that my wife and I didn't want in the house.

I also had a lot of very deep Gorilla Shelf like shelves that were over stuffed making it very difficult for me to find anything.

I wish I knew about this site a few months ago, because I would have taken "before" pics, but alas you guys will have to settle for "mid-way" pics.

Right now i'm trying to convince my wife that putting up a flat panel LCD in the garage is a good idea, and that the floors need to be spruced up somehow.

I hope to get lots of suggestions and feedback as i'm kind of out of ideas, and i'm still not happy with where my garage is at.

Anyways, here's some pics...

Entering the garage from the house:

Installed some "hangers" on the ceiling to store longer pieces of wood, otherwise they were just laying on the ground:

Left side wall (haven't done anything with the shelves...i want something a little more modern, and maybe more cabinet like)

Turn your head to the right side of the garage and this is what you'll see...We took apart the some of our Gorilla shelves and turned them into work-bench/storage units that I put on wheels. I wanted to be able to move them around easily so that i could configure the benches as needed, i.e. large island, long bench, etc.

Another view of those movable benches, and also I should mention we build some very shallow shelves on that wall. My wife came up with that idea, because she knew I have problems with over-stuffing deep shelves. :)

A better view of how shallow those shelves are:

Geez, didn't realize how over-loaded that shelving unit is...It's all of our Christmas, Halloween, and camping stuff...

Bungied my ladders to the wall...

Nasty floors...need help with this one guys :dunno:

My wife and I put up a shed right outside of the garage, which is where we now store our bikes, lawnmower, and other misc. gardening stuff.

Oh yeah, and see that blank wall back there. That's where i want to put a flat panel TV that's attached to a garage PC and internet.

Anyways, it's been a long and hard two months to get it to this state. I know it doesn't look like much, but it's such an improvement.

I think it looks great. It is clean, and organized, and your able to store and get to thing pretty well. You have a nice L shaped workbench and looks like even more room to expand things if you wish. Everything seems to work out and be handy and comfortable in there.
I know we are "never" happy with our garages/shops/auto repair centers/or whatever you label them, but it looks like your in great shape as it is. From here, it becomes what you figure you want it to be. That is what makes it special to you, and if your happy, well nothing else really matters!
Keep us posted!

You are off to a great start! What is the distance from the tracks to the ceiling? Would it be possible to put some shelving up in that area to store the less used items? I did that in mine after seeing some really cool units on this site.

There's about 1'10" between the ceiling and the highest part of the garage door tracks.

I think your off to a great start, and you are definitely a candidate to put a shelf above the rails. You don't need a lot of room just need to get some containers that will work in that spot.

Here's a pic of one i put up.

Do you have a basement? Christmas and Halloween stuff should be a definitely be shipped to a crawl space, closet or basement. BTW do you put up two Christmas trees? hahaha

Good luck!

I think the wheelie work shelf system is great, and the floor is better than the one I have, all you have to do with that is grind the rough bit flat and paint it, unless SWMBO lets you get some garage floor tiles.:rocker:

Off to a good start for sure. I have those same cabinets. I would have nothing on the floor and my garage still looked unorganized, I realized that even though everything was on the shelves it was still visible. I just took some cheap sheets of wood and made doors, huge difference. You can kind of see it here.

I'm going to cap the ends and repaint them another color this weekend.

You also have a couple of spots it seems that you could fit putting a tire rack on the wall.
I know for the remodel of my space i took an inventory of everything i had in the garage and thought A) Do i still need this? B) Does it need to be in here?

Even just that little area where the wheels are now could be saved with wheels mounted, cooler and kennel relocated and decide if you need that little wooden shelf (doesn't seem useful for the space). Great decision with the shed, is there anymore room in there for some odds and ends?
