Storage Lockers

I have this locker, I don't recall when or where I picked it up.

I'm going to be moving soon. It's riveted together, but I could drill those out and pack it flat and then reassemble with sheet metal screws (or new rivets). Paint it up nice and all.

A part of me says sell it off on craiglist for $25, but for some reason I rather like it. Heavy door, locks in place, built in lock is dead but has a hole for a padlock, rusty but not rusted out, seems to be mouse proof...

What's a good use for a locker like this? I could put rails/shelves inside, and it's deep! 18 x 72 x 21 deep. Maybe line the inside with pegboard for dustproof storage? I could keep a lot of stuff inside...

What do y'all think? What do you use your lockers for? Pics welcome.

I've got one similar. Put shelves in it and keep air tools inside it. Oil cans, paint, boxes of nails, etc etc...

Keep it. You can always add more shelves and keep spraycans and other flammable stuff in there to keep it away from grinding/welding sparks.

I've got something similar. I left the shelves, lined out the mid portion with softwood, and use all 3 sides as 'hanging space"! Works well!

Paint & flammables locker is how I would use it.

That's a good locker. I'd keep it.

Ok ok, I guess you're saying keep it. But be honest now, how many of you are hoarders?

It's fairly light and can be broken down flat if I bore the rivets out. I'm making excuses to keep it, I guess that means I like it.

Like I said, I'm moving. I'm not so sure, where, exactly...so I don't know about space. Currently I make use of a bunch of filing cabinets for my needs. I don't have a big truck, so I rather not be hauling those heavy things everywhere, and no matter where I go, somebody will probably be giving them away as long as I get it out of their basement for them so I'm not really attached.

The black file drawers I rather like, too. I'm thinking I'll put a sheet of plywood down on top of one of them and mount wheels. Rolling work surface. Works pretty nice on the shelf (space for air compressor/shop vac below) as I have it, too, if that gives anyone an idea.

Oh, this is better than pegboard.

Metal cabinets constructed in the following manner shall be deemed to be in compliance. The bottom, top, door, and sides of cabinet shall be at least No. 18 gage sheet iron and double walled with 1 1/2 - inch air space. Joints shall be riveted, welded or made tight by some equally effective means. The door shall be provided with a three-point lock, and the door sill shall be raised at least 2 inches above the bottom of the cabinet.

You can use it for Flammable storage, but I fail to see how good it would be considering it has vent slots all over it.

I suppose the idea would be to make it difficult for sparks to get at, I don't know about the code stuff.

If the whole garage was on fire already, I suppose it's not much good. Then again, the whole garage is on fire, I have bigger problems. It'd probably slow things down a bit.

(not mocking the concept of safe storage entirely...it's a good idea considering the amount of flammable stuff I have just laying around, even if I'm in a non-commercial setting).

---

I'm gonna do some quick cuts and test it out with shelves...

I wouldn't go through the work of breaking it down. You can put it in whatever truck you do use and fill it top to bottom. You'd essentially not be wasting any space.

I don't think your going to find someone "giving one away" and I believe it's worth somewhat more than $25.

That's true, I can put it in a truck, but I don't know about my moving situation. I'm moving down in a truck 8 hours away for a few months, and after that I'm not sure if I'm going to be in a truck or quite possibly my whole life in a minivan (or whatever I get), so not sure about space.

So if I'm going to put time into it I'd like something (potentially) portable, otherwise I might as well ditch it now.

Also:

Filing cabinets are dime a dozen guys, that's what I'm talking about. Lockers? I've never seen someone selling a locker. Pretty cool, I think.

I had it on craigslist for a few weeks at $25 and nobody bit, dropped price to $20. It was sitting in the shed and pretty nasty, but I've since cleaned it up and now that I have 2 hits come out of nowhere. "Value is what someone is willing to pay for it." But FWIW, yeah, I think I can get more than 20 bucks of value out of it.

Long gun storage!

That's a good idea, but the longest gun I got is a .177 air rifle!

It'd be lonely.

---

So I got some scrap plywood cut but ran out of daylight and don't want to drive the neighbors nuts with the saw.

I like the concept of pegboard or solid boards up top for three sided hanging, and shelves below, but before I start drilling and modding I'm just going to try some shelves. It's deep! Almost too deep...

Bad pic but for visuals:

I'm in the DC metro area - people here don't fix things. :dunno:

(man i left that wide open for wise cracking)

Especially if I work out a couple dents, do a little sand and spray, I think it'd be pretty sharp.

But if your tools are less than 11" tall or so, I can say I like file drawers. Usually comes with a set of keys. I got mine out of the trash and the other from an estate sale for 40? Both made by Hon. Ball bearings are excellent, black finish is sharp.

If you're dead set on want it you be able to break down, get some of those really flat headed screws to assemble it with drill and replace the rivets one at a times so you don't misalign anything
