Nice older SO set I picked up off ebay

This is a 1/4 drive set the mailman just brought me today. Although I was not impressed with the tin, most everything inside looks virtually new. I'm not sure why two of the pics I took have a goldish look. Most everything in this set has 1950 date stamping. A few sockets have '51,'58,'59 date stamping. I was more impressed seeing it in person than the pics on ebay. Maybe somebody can help me with this...some of the sockets, stamped with the same 1950 date code, have knurling and some don't. Most parts in this set are hard to tell from brand new at first glance.

This just shows how high quality Snapon tools are, IMHO.... I have a bunch of 1/4" drive Snapon tools; I put them in rust removal solution and they look like new! Many of these tools are from 50s-60s; it is unbelievable to me how good they look, many times they really look "like new", aside from the old part#'s and markings! Many of these tools are 40-60 years old! Amazing! Get some rusty tools and Evapo-Rust will take care of it! Evapo-Rust RULES!!

What do you use to remove rust? I have some universals that could use some help. Also, being as how nice the inside things are compared to the tin, I was pondering the idea of lightly sandblasting it and repainting it.

Regarding removing rust, I've been using a product called "The Must for Rust" from Home Depot (it's a Krud Kutter product). $7/32 oz. bottle. Some kind of acid solution. Works surprisingly well. Seems it needs many hours of contact before you get good results. Overnight sessions turn out best. Doesn't seem to harm chrome.

This is a spray on solution, but others soak instead. Works much better if you brass wire brush the item (or stainless wire if the part can handle it) between sessions. If it dries it will leave a white powder residue which brushes off easily. Sometimes it has turned a tool yellow but maybe that's because I used a brass brush with it.

Very nice set there. If you go to harbor freight for the evaporust they have a two tray kitty litter box that works perfect for tools and evaporust.

Yup, I've been using that stuff for a while and it works pretty well. I really only use it for really stubborn rust. I hate that white residue though.

That is a nice set, looks like the set I have, but mine is about 29 years newer, hahahaha. Anything old and vintage is much better than the newer version and has the cool factor!!!
