so i was watching a new episode of overhaulin, they were doing a 70 el camino. they were using a harbor freight 3/8 green handle roto ratchet and also the "pro" green/grey screwdrivers. thought is was kind of funny considering the place was loaded with mac tools/boxes.

Interesting.

I have and like the HF roto ratchet. Made in Taiwan and pretty nice quality, especially for the price.

But the screwdrivers? There are too many good, affordable US and European drivers to mess with Chinese HF drivers, IMO.

I have the roto ratchet. Thing's great but damn it's stiff. I tried letting it stand in ATF for a few days, didn't work. Tried injecting grease in it, no dice. I want to love that ratchet, and get the 1/4" and 1/2" versions, but it's too stiff for me.

Yes. Tooth count, design (Pittsburgh is sealed, can't open it without ruining it), drag difference, price.

I just bought the Tekton roto ratchet based on a thread on this board. That HF looks exactly like the tekton to me. Even the rubber handle pattern is the same, just green vs red and pittsburgh vs tekton. Not much price difference either.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00A50NB1K/?tag=atomicindus08-20

It doesn't look the same as the snap on or gearwrench, see pg 16 here:

The thread recommending the tekton said it was the same as a mac or matco, I forget which...but I don't see anything like it on mac or matco's site, so maybe it changed.

i bought all three sizes in full length and stubby when they were on sale with a 20% coupon. Real happy with them for the price.

Not to happy you can't take them apart but hey, if it breaks I'll just swap it for another one. The drag is also a little on the stiff side for me but I'll deal with it for what I paid for them.

I've seen them use a number of different brands of tools; Snapon and Mac, Matco... In the same episode (70 el camino); when they are installing the suspension, you can plainly see them using Snapon S936 series ratchets. I think it depends on who is working on the cars; many times they bring in third party vendors and those vendors people to install different components; suspension, exhausts etc.

Its been my experience over the years that somebody who knows their trade can do really nice work with what ever they have on hand,On the other hand you can give the nicest tools/materials in the world to a butchering ******* and he will proceed to turn the same trash work.
I grew up in a family of blacksmith/boilermakers,My dad would always say that a blacksmith will make a tool to make a tool to make a part.
He didn't think as highly of the railroad machinists he dealt with on a daily basis.:spit:

This is kinda off topic but I was watching Malcolm in the middle on Netflix yesterday and noticed a snap on soft grip screwdriver in a drawer with a proto and in a other episode they were using the cheapest crappiest looking ratchet I've ever seen to change a spark plug on their lawn mower.

Sorta like military vets who watch war movies. They tend to pick apart details that 99% of the other viewers who just see it as a movie/TV prop and nothing else.
