anyone know where you can buy plastic gas line for service to pole building. online or other wise. need 200 ft.
+1 on what Junkman said.
Our gas company will not sell the pipe, but they will sell complete pipe assemblies for customer's to use. Normally underground gas pipe is high density polyethylene that is heat fused by a person TRAINED AND CERTIFIED to do so. They also make stab couplings that work very well, but you can mess those up too if you don't know what you're doing. Also, all underground gas lines should be pressure tested before being put into service.
BTW...Can I just jump in here and say to everyone out there that is running their own underground gas line...make sure you talk to the gas company about it before you do it. I'm so sick of having to shut off gas meters because I happen to notice somebody's cousin Elmer thinks he knows how to plumb so he ran PVC for gas line out to the new pole barn. Don't use PVC for gas. Don't use medium density PE water line for gas. If you are unsure if a particular plastic pipe is proper for gas, look at it closely. Does it say "GAS" on the pipe. NO? THEN IT CAN'T BE USED FOR GAS! If a hose clamp is involved anywhere in your gas installation???? You F'ed up. Shut it off and call a certified plumber before you kill someone. And one more thing, plastic can't be used to carry gas above ground. You must use the steel to plastic transition fittings or (even better) anodeless service risers to keep the plastic underground. How deep underground? Again check with your gas company. Although CFR192 doesn't apply to customer owned piping, it generally requires plastic gas service lines to be burried with at least 18" of cover.
Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. This was in no way directed at the original poster. I admire him for asking how to do this properly. Now if someone would just post "Is it OK if I build my garage over the top of my gas service?" I could really have a coranary.
