Found these two old, 3/4 HP Craftsman Motors at a local Tag sale, these two and a smaller, no name motor were under the table with $20.00 tags on the two 3/4HP and a $10.00 on the 1/4 HP.. I asked the guy what was the best he could do on them and he goes, "Give me $20.00 for all 3, how's that sound?" I was like, Hell yeah!! They look a bit rustic but Purrrr like Kittens. one was off an old Table saw, the other was used to run a shaft that his dad ran polishers and grinders off of...

lol

I figure its a good score for $20.00! :pimpflash

You ****! Those Craftsmans are good motors. Clean em up and make sure the wiring and bearings/bushings are ok and you will get a lifetime of service out of them.

Wow...sounds like you all have been talking to my Wife! :)

lol.. Thanks...

Coalminer, Mohawk.. Tag Sale = People put their "Junk" out on the drive way and try to sell it instead of giving it away...lol,lol,lol.. Or better yet, Craig's List without looking at a computer screen. Yard Sale, Garage Sale, and the best one yet, Estate Sale! lol...

Here's a question... do I replace the Craftsman 1/2 HP version of these with one of the 3/4 HP ones? the 3/4 are less RPM's but wouldn't they have a bit more torque? or is it not worth the effort?

Next time you want one of those motors, buy one of the old table saws, drills, or other vintage benchtop iron. Then you will have the machine, plus the motor, and can get part of your money back breaking the machine for parts on ebay. I normally wont pay $20 for the entire machine with motor in non-rusty condition.

As for trading a high speed motor for a lower speed one w/more torque, Id say it depends entirely on the motors and application. Most machines have oversized motors on them, so youre probably fine but wont know til you try.

yeah I have made the Vari Slo speed reducer for the DP so I can now go down to 175 RPM (or was it 179... I forget... lol) So I really don't NEED the lower speed.. im just wondering if the extra Torque is worth it to go to the trouble of switching them out, not that its a lot of work but ... you know how that goes...lol

I do see a lot of the older tools for sale but even beat up and Rusty they are still going for what I consider top dollar... in fact, there's a Table Saw on Craig's list I saw yesterday, $60.00. it looks like its in OK condition but for $60.00 it would be hard to get even 1/2 of it back on the parts for the saw...unless it was in super mint condition...lol I see a lot of the parts on Ebay and I cant believe what these guys are trying to get for some of these parts. Especially the Old Drill Press stuff. Im just glad mine was only missing the motor when I got it, of course, it was free so even with buying the motor, it was STILL worth it in my book.

Ok... here it is.

Before: I stuck one of my old motors on it, a 1/3 HP to see how the shaft spun... lol

the motor I got off EBay for it.. Had to put new bearings in it and re wire it... it was good to tear it down though, there was all sorts of **** inside it that needed to be blown out and off it...lol

Define "High Speed" and "Low Speed"

RPM dictates tool speed, (at the outer cutting edge and = SFP (surface feet per min))_

Most motors are 1725 or 3450. a DP typically wants 1725...

Let's see how close I am...I think "tag sale" means he's from Connecticut/suburban NY. Anyway, geographically limited term for yard/garage/estate sale!

Good score on the motors but they are to high of an RPM for the drill press. Great for jointers, table saws, and other high speed tools.
