Thought I'd post an update on my vice and stand resto. This is how I got it:

I went with light grey and wine red and this is what it looks like now:

With a little left over paint, I tarted up an arbor press I picked up for cheap locally (best £21 I ever spent). Jones & Shipman, Made in Leicester, England:

After 1/2 wirewheeling session, two new acorn nuts and a lick of paint:

8707656400_31204e2292_b.jpg

Finally, got this one a few days back - 6" Record No. 36 - they are about $1k new:

Stripped, wire wheeled and ready for paint:

Both very nice, I like the old Parkinsons as I think they really got the quick release ball rolling then that Record 36 shape is the vice that I really think is a genuine Record design and not borrowed from another manufacturer.
If I had to pick a classic Record vice design it would be that one.

Ted. one very nice *********, all in excellent condition.
Here's one for the Vise Journal. How many of you have ever seen a Reed 402 1/2 swivel back? Here's one, unfortunately its not mine.

This is a really great thread. I learned a lot here before I dove into my Athol and resto'd it.

Found this at an estate sale this weekend. It was buried in the back corner of the garage still attached to the bench. The guy hosting the sale said "10 bucks if you want to go to the trouble of detaching it." okedokie!

I've already taken it apart. Once I cut through the really old caked on dried grease, I found that the vise is in really great condition with hardly any wear marks to speak of. I have every reason to believe that the handle is original too. This will look great on the bench once installed!

Those are a fine collection of Wilton vises, should have all your needs covered. I am glad the label worked out for you on the big guy. How did you fix it? Great job on painting also.

Kevin

Thanks Dave, If I remember your vise jaws are 5 inches wide. Nice looking vise, are you going to add a new paint job.

I just purchased this Chas Parker this last weekend. Gave $200 for it and do not feel like I got ripped. Vise weighs 140 lbs. Autopts sent me a set of Chas Parker jaws one time to see if I could build them. I turned him down but now that I am finished with all the Wilton bullet jaws I want new challenges. I am going to build a set for this Chas Parker 956. Cutting the large curve on top of the jaws will take as long as cutting the serrations. The 6 wide inch jaws will be a fun challenge.

_vin_ If you need jaws send me a Pm and maybe I can help you.

Glad Nick took care of you Ted.
Kevin

Good score EJM02!!

Here is an old Craftsman I just finished yesterday.
pic02493.jpg

pic02492.jpg

How about that? I just picked up the exact same from an estate sale for $10 (and my time to remove it from the bench). Took me a few days, but it will now serve great as a backup to my larger vise. Yours is super clean though, and the colors would have worked just as well in my shop!!

I just picked up a 4.5" jaw vise in good working condition with the following markings:

"L M & V CO

LOWSVILLE, NY"

I suppose the "55" is the model number, and I have seen similar listed as "Fulton," but none with these markings. I am assuming they stand for "Lowsville Machine & Vise Co" but any information would be greatly appreciated.

First one of those I've ever seen johnfrankl, but I like it. Very neat vise, should be a beautiful restore. But if you'd like to part with it, I could save you all that cussing and fussing that you are going to go through.

I gave away a vise today. A little Parker 974. It was the second one I restored. I don't have a need for it, and a buddy who did work on my house can use it. I'm glad it's going to a good home, but I feel like I have given up one of my kids for someone else to raise.

I have a pair Desmond Stephan vises now, I think:dunno:. Been out of the hunt staying with my dad in the hospital for the last three weeks. I think he will get released Saturday finally. Stopped by an estate sale today and picked up my second Desmond Stephan vise, but the other one is so small its hiding from me.

This 61S Simplex is going to be pretty hard to hide. Few battle scars but it is going to clean up real nice. Can any of you experienced vise guys give me any back ground on these?

The previous owner moved down to to Bigcaddy's neighborhood and couldn't get this in their motor home:bounce:

Good hunting guys!

I've got this old cast iron sign base that I found in an alley. Says: "City of Chicago". Must weight 50 pounds. It's about 12" across.

I think it would be a good base for my 3" Craftsman/Reed. Weighs about 25 pounds.

I just need a 36" x 2.375" steel pole w/ a .25" steel plate welded to it.

Yeah, I was with my 2 y.o. son when I found it. We where on a walk. On one arm is my 20 pound son, and in my other is this 50 pound hunk of steel. I made it about 30 feet and had to stash it behind a dumpster. Came back for it later. Yeah, I'm real classy.

If I had stashed it behind a dumpster, the only efficient dumpster emptiers in the world would have shown up, and absconded with it!!!
