Looking to get my first decent box and my step dads snap on guy has this box on his truck right now. I believe it is brand new. I can't remember the model number I just don't want to over pay, so what is it worth?

Thanks in advanced.

Looks like a KRSC46 to me, which really isnt a "Tool Box" its a "Tool Cart" is it Used or New? Cash Deal or Financed?

Yea as Dave said, it is technically a cart and not a box.

It looks like it is on the tool truck, so..... I think I have read they are around ~$1200-$1400 new on the truck

There is a guy on my local craigslist with one that looks really nice for $700.

If you are looking for a box, usually used is the way to go.

It really isn't about what something new on the truck is "worth".It's about what the tool guy charges for it.

Thanks he's asking 1600. It's brand new and I've been looking for something this size in either a big cart or smaller tool box. Over grew my free box from a coworker.

Tell him I will pay the 1600 but want 500 back to spend on the truck with 10%off the price of what ever I get off the truck.

Honestly, with all of the nice used boxes on Craigslist, there is no way in hell that I would buy one off a truck......You could buy a nice used big box for $1600....

If u want it and u want a new one call him meet him and walk on the truck with $1,400 cash. That's about as good as its gonna get for a new one. And FYI he prob bought it back in March or February when they were running them for 10% off on special.

YMMV....Been shopping for a box myself and from my research its best to buy off the truck, either new or used. Boxes on CL fall into 2 categories:
-Old boxes at good prices
-Newer boxes at 90% of retail.

Recently saw a Macsimizer which caught my eye on CL, i've got a quote from my driver in my hand for LESS then what they are asking for that used one...and on the new one I earn some "Brownie Points" with my driver, he drops it off at the house for free, and I can order whatever color I want, drawer config, etc.. all for LESS money. Why would I want a used box?

Even on a used box, my driver and I have chatted about it, he blows them off the truck at very reasonable prices. If I get a used box, it will certianly be off the truck. Again..no headaches of picking it up or bringing it home, he will stand behind it 100% even if used, etc.

As someone who has bought dozens of toolboxes off CL I disagree with all of this. If you can't find a smoking deal on CL for a toolbox, you're not looking hard enough.

My experience with our local Snappy guy is that he marks used boxes up like crazy. As an example, I bought a very clean Macsimizer Double Bank with top box for $2k on CL, (no good deals on CL right?????). Cleaned it up, and sold it to a friend for $2,800; still a very good deal. His Snappy guy gave him $5,800 for it on trade for an Epiq. Snappy guy resold the Macsimizer for $8k. THAT is how tool truck math works. Techs will overpay to get financed.

If you work hard enough, (lots of phone calls, offers, and time), you can buy beautiful pro toolboxes for 25% of list price used. If you want the latest wierd color, you may have to pay closer to 50%. But you have to ask if you are buying a fashion accessory or a well made box to store your tools??? You just have to wade through all the ads to find the motivated sellers. And elimate the dreamers who have not yet come down to earth. And I've seem these dreamers eventually come around to a reasonable price, usually it's the wife getting tired of not getting her minivan in the garage until the box goes.

YMMV...sounds like your in a better area then me.

I look at CL every day...have an app and get notifications on all newly posted MAC/Snappy stuff on my phone. Its rare I miss anything of either brand.

I know what your saying about techs paying more to get financing off the truck, absouletly true. Drivers also dont mind blowing them off the truck ASAP for real cash money. My SO guy knows what I'm looking for and almost every week shows me pics of boxes he's got coming in on trade. Pre-Buying one is a great way to snag a deal. Buddy of mine got a real nice Tech 1000 for $550.00 off the truck, cheapest I see them on CL is 1k.
That goes both ways too, techs also prefer trading boxes in vs selling outright because they are trading up, and financing a new one.

My current Craftsman 40" setup (Top & Bottom) came from a SnapOn truck, driver told me, $250.00 right now if I dont have to load it up..I promptly paid the man and got a fairly decent box for a great price.

**Edit** Take a peek at the Maine Craigslist...you tell me if you see anything worth buying.

I tend to agree with this /\

On my local CL, there are SO boxes listed all the time for ~50% of retail. I don't know that I'd refer to those as "smoking deals" because honestly, even at 50% off many SO boxes are still overpriced IMO.

As for the box in question, yes that does appear to be a krsc46 which is an excellent box\cart for a beginning tech. Actually depending on what field you're in it may be the only box you ever need? S-O sells that box through their student discount program for ~ $800-$850 and I regularly see those boxes on CL for around that same prices from techs who started with one and are now moving up to something bigger.

Personally I don't think its worth anything more than that but if it's brand new on the truck I doubt your dealer will go that low unless maybe it was a special order that someone backed out of? I thinks it a great starter box but there is no way I'd pay more then $1k for it brand new.

Just my $.02

> Dave;

I guess part of the problem is that you live in Maine. If I were on the hunt in your area, I would look all the way down to Massachusetts and Connecticut. The more populated areas will have the most stuff for sale.

Another thing, you can't just search for Snap-on/MAC Tool box. Some folks forget to put key information in the title. Just as an example...Someone could list: "Giant Toolbox" or "Red Roll Cab". Search through every tool listing in every state within 200 miles, and do that a few times a day, and you should have success.

Agree with you 100% on all counts. I'm searching everything (combined I think I am searching about 8 keywords and variations)...quite honestly thanks to my wife's insight...I think I jumped the gun with my shopping anyways. I really just gotta finish my sheetrock/mudding/painting before I should get a nice box, so not in a rush, but looking at what my SO & MAC Guy has coming & going thru the trucks, gonna be hard to beat their pricing.
Still looking at CL, but unless its a crazy deal, gotta get the interior buttoned up first.

i didnt read the entire thread but for $1600 i have seen excellent condition krl 722's. That is indeed a nice cart but for that much money I would much rather push you toward a used box. My biggest miss was a yellow krl722 with a stainless top for 1500. I was watching it on ebay and someone took the buy it now for 1500. So, the point is dont buy that cart. Watch cl and ebay for a nice used box.

A guy in my shop bought one of those a while back. They seem awfully expensive for the size. Needless to say, he sold it after a month or two and moved up to a bigger roll cab.

I'm pretty sure you could find my box (kra4107? 41" top & bottom) on Craigslist for 1600 or 2000. I've seen guys who had a student discount buy them, and immediately list them on Craigslist in that price range, in brand new condition.

If you can't find a deal like that, wait til someone else trades a box in to your dealer and buy that. Snap on boxes are built to last, so as long as it's well maintained, don't be scared to buy used.

As weird as it may seem, the tool box prices are much higher on Seattle Craigslist than Portland Oregon Craigslist. I am guessing in general 25% better deals in Portland.

I also find that if you have cash, Craigslist is the place to get a tool box/chest.
