Speedaire Aircompressor ?!??

Hey Guys,

Just acquired a Speedaire Air Compressor but couldn't find any info on it. Can you guys help me get some info on it. Can anyone tell me some of the specs on this thing, maybe tank size/cfm/etc. Maybe one of you guys have the same one or something. Thanks.

This is a Grainger stocked product line..

Try this number for Speedaire parts from Grainger: 800 323 0620. May be active #?

While I'm sure you know Speedaire is a house label for Grainger, it's actually manufactured by Campbell Hausfeld. Two cylinder single stage pump, 3450 rpm motor, delivery should be about the same as similar Campbell units such as a VT6290 5.5 cfm at 90psi, 6.5 cfm at 40 psi, 135 psi max.

Tank size? About 20 gallon.

They're decent little units with an oil-lubricated cast iron pump. And that one looks really clean. Should have a lot of life left for you.

Yep, looks just like my 30 year old Speedaire! Only newer
Mine is 20 gal, 2HP, 240V. As noted, if that thing runs as good as it looks, you have a compressor that will last a good long time. The tank should have a certification label welded on the pump mount that lists size and date of mfg amung other required info. The pump will have model number cast inti it. Parts for these compressors are available at Grainger. Nice find

p.s. In the last few years Campbell Hausfeld has offshored production of that pump model - the one you've got is US made and worth hanging onto.

4B244 comes back on Grainger's site as the model number for just the pump, rather than the whole compressor. But it does show good parts availability there, as well.

I've also got that exact model I believe. Just much dirtier, and probably 15 years old.
It's tired...can barely keep up with anything more than my 1/2" impact.

Thanks for the reply guys! I think I got more info from you guys than what I found just from searching the web. I found the pump on the grainger website when I search for 4B422 but its just the pump and saw that the new ones are made in China. Mine definitely says "Made in USA" embossed(like raised lettering) on the pump.

It was dirty when I first got it. It was covered in dust,oil, grime, not to mention spider webs with eggs. Nasty. First thing i did was to wash it. Cleaned up pretty good. Changed the oil on it and it looks good. And pump actually runs smooth and quiet. The only thing I need to figure out how to repair is the pressure gauges. It has 2 gauges: tank pressure and the regulator outlet pressure. My problem is that both pressure gauges are stuck at some psi number even when the tank is drained. The regulator gauge only works at some point, maybe it will start to work at ~80psi +. Do you guys have any idea how to fix those? I'd like mine to be fully functional. What I'm thinking is maybe screwing in a new gauge?

Also, I got this from a friend. It was his grandfather's compressor(funny story how he got it). Anyway I kept seeing this compressor every time I go to their house - in the back corner just sitting there collecting dust. So I asked him about it months ago. I just had to get a vehicle to be able to fit this in and bring it home. If I tell how much I got this for you guys will kill me! Haha!

Replace them. They can't be repaired, just screw in new gauges. They're cheap, and if you got as great a deal as you hinted that you did, then you can afford new gauges

Agree with Zrexxer- simply remove the gauges and install 2" gauges with rating of 160 psi or higher. Put a simple quality 1/4 pipe sized regulator as well. The electrics will require replacing with the same type on similar compressors. replace the compressor pump oil and make sure the tank is drained. Inspect the belt. Those are available also. Probably a 49" (mine is).

Update: Added 2 new pictures at beginning of page.

When I removed the plastic cover for the gauge I saw that it had one of those manifold type piping. Wasn't sure if I had to pretty much make my own custom gauge cluster since its got that manifold or I would be able to remove just the actual gauge face and replace it. From what you guys are telling me I could just do the 2nd option.

Again, nice little compressor. Get your gauges installed and run it up to a typical working pressure and see if everything works.

Also recommend testing the bypass valve . . . ie run it up to higher pressure like 120 psi and pull the ring on bypass valve.

Almost forgot . . . YOU **** !!!
That's a great starter / mobile compressor for FREE ! I'd keep that one at 120v so you can use almost anywhere.

Now you can keep searching CL for it's vertical Big Brother . . . like a Curtis, Champion, Quincy, etc. when the right deal comes along. That will be your 240v compressor for whole garage to last lifetime.

Thanks Zrexxer. Yeah I removed one of the gauges to get it measured out so i could get pretty much the same size.

CNGsaves - Thanks! I'm gonna try all that. I'll get a new gauge for it and run it up. Been too afraid of it not automatically turning the pump off by itself, specially with the gauge not reading right. I kinda tested the bypass valve though and I pulled it and air went out, but not sure what the tank psi was when I did that.

I'm definitely keeping this one. Just the embossed "Made in USA" mark on the pump makes it a definite keeper!
