Oh my. Tell him that a decent motor/pulley and a phase converter (if you don't have the proper hookup. Not sure what smaller lathes run but most I've used were 3) will run you that much anyways. Offer him 100... but try not to offend him :D

I love that "Works great", but needs motor. :lol_hitti

It might be a good deal if it is not worn out. Actually it looks like it is missing the entire motor drive assembly? If so that could get expensive to replace.

Plus it has the super rare and $$$ milling attachment.
Negative, appears to missing the spindle chucks (at least I can't see them in the picture).

I don't see any pieces for attaching a motor, not good.

Offer him $200 for parts, I'll give you $100 for the milling attachment and there's half your money back already

Yea, that is going to be the factor. Look at the black and white pic you posted. The large pulley in the back is actually a counter shaft that gets input from the motor. Most importantly it hinges to set the drive belt tension (at least it does on my South Bend 10").

FYI, just something to keep in mind.

On the other hand if you were looking for a cheap box, I might check this one out.

Re: Older lave? - Atlas- Older Lathe

I looked at the Atlas TH-54 lathe this morning, no chuck, motor or parts to hang it. I could hand turn the main gear and everything needs some lube. Ways looked ok with some damage under the chuck area.

I guess i'm missing something (and i don't know anything about lathes), but how does it run, if the motor and pulley were thrown away?

I'm trying to get up at 0800 to look at this mess. I called the seller, it runs but the motor and pulley were thrown away, he's asking $400.:willy_nil
Does this look the same?

Not a steal but a good deal if all there. tool holders etc tooling.
Motor and pulleys not a big deal. Likley this is a 110V and pully selection equals gearing. A swamp cooler pump motor or low rpm would work. this lathe is not used for heavy industry anyway but really handy for a small shop, could not exist without one and the price is affordable and give you something to do, or go to a combo mill lathe for 1400$ shopsmith but this is better for 400$

If it doesn't have AT LEAST the full gear change set, it s a parts machine at best. Damage to the ways under the chuck area is common, but can also be a deal-breaker.

Getting past AT LEAST: Tooling? chucks, centers drive plates, etc.

Milling attachment? I don't see one. are you looking at the cross feed?

It is laying on its side on the front way in pic "4 of 5".
That attachment, for a 6" Atlas lathe, would sell for about $250-275 on eBay.
If that's a 12" lathe and milling attachment, then the milling attachment would sell for even more. I got $401 for the one I sold a couple of months ago.

That lathe only needs a 3/4HP motor, so a cheap fix, but the conical/step pulley setup to change spindle speeds is missing (motor turns the pulley assy., and there are four or five steps for the belt between there and spindle to choose from). The change gear set for the threading/feed would be another $100 on eBay.

Those lathes used a separate countershaft assembly between the motor and the headstock to achieve different spindle speeds. If it's not there, that's a problem. Plus, the Zamak change gears are hard to find, leaving you scouring eBay looking for the ones you need. I think Clausing still sells new change gears for them but theirs are apparently 24K gold rather than zinc.
