From what I have seen and read, these impact wrenches are the real-deal NASCAR pit guns. Made by (or modified by?) BSR Products, which is/was somehow affiliated with Hurd pit tools, these are the original and still the industry standard. These are not your watered-down Amazon.com $200 "street legal" thunderguns.

$1325-1428!!

Has anyone had the pleasure of using one of these monsters? They sell 400psi regulators too; that's just insane! Does anyone have more info on these? I may give them a call and ask some questions. I couldn't even imagine how fast these spin - 20k rpm? 30k?

I only have the "street legal" one, you would never need anything faster unless you were a NASCAR pit crew. I think the torque is no big deal, but they probably spin at???????I don't know 20K rpms maybe. The tools inner parts are probably built to take the high pressure; which makes them soo expensive????Is there a NASCAR crew member in the house?????:bounce:

Yes. They scream.

BSR took over Hurd several years ago.

The tools run off compressed nitrogen and have some modified motor parts and the housings are trimmed down. The 'legal' version we sell is the same base model, but obviously is less than the original. It still does have higher RPM than most impacts though.

BSR takes a great deal of care with the tool- they have a lot of liability if the tool should fail during a pit stop (as do we). A mobile shop is near pit lane for quick repair and exchange at the races.

Most of the metal housing tools 1/2" and smaller are made offshore. Most of the composite (plastic housing) tool models are made (at least assembled) here. The more they cost the more likely we touched it here.

I don't know what full thundergun specs are, the tool gives near instant RPM and torques guick. Given the 10K rpm of the 'legal' version it should be at least that. There used to be a BSR/Hurd info site that had more tool specific information- including the history of how the late MR. Hurd developed the tool for the market.

The last pit gun I bought when I was doing some touring races, it was a previous Roush Fenway gun. Ran me $2800 used. But it was worth every penny. Best reaction on swap, easiest trigger pull and had speed. Worked at 250psi nitrogen. Hi-flow fittings on a 1/2 hose. I know this is an old post but it may give some insight. LKN Tool Repair in Mooresville actually builds billet guns for tire changers. Chuck Efaw which came from Red Bull Racing started this company to innovate over what the competition already used. Fine quality and super guy. Fixing to order my second gun from him in the spring.

As far as the "street legal" IR Thunder Gun goes. The illustrated parts breakdown drawing is virtually identical to the old Harbor Freight Eartquake, except for a part or two at the trigger. Earthquake was their knockoff of Thunder. Probably made in the same Chinese factory. The IR blurb said it SOUNDED like a real pit gun. Kind of like a little kid running around going VROOM, VROOM. I don't see any of us wanting to play pretend with our tools. I want power, reliability and as little noise as possible. I thought it was a stupid idea. That said, it was probably an OK gun.

Is Brunnhoelzl still in business? I used to run their jacks, guns, and had a shifter of their's once.
