Looping/Locating Splices in J-Box

I knew I would have another question before long.

I'm splicing 2-2-2-4 SER and 2-2-2-4 MHF in a 12x12x6 box. Using split bolt connectors. The cables will be entering the box on the exact opposite sides from each other, about 3" from the top. What's the best way to loop the wires and locate the split bolts? Should the splices be staggered? I plan on insulating the split bolts with a combination electrical tape, friction tape and electrical tape.

Can't tell you how to run the loops other than what looks comfortable. IOW, don't bend the wires tighter than a radius of 5X the diameter of the wire mass.

Use good electrical tape like 3M and forget the layers of different tape. Give it a good wrap like 10 times.

I know split bolts can be used but I just don't like them for this application. I prefer splice/reducers with shrink tube or Polaris connectors. I don't know why but I think split bolts look amateur. That's just my opinion.

Pattenp - I know you recommended the splice/reducers, but the electrician at my local HD (moonlighting to support his family) said the fasteners are difficult to torque?

I agree, they look cleaner to me, too.

when i use split bolts it rubber tape followed by 33+ than friction tape. done it this way up to 480V.

I agree, they look cleaner to me, too.

Don't get the type with a slotted set screw. Get the type with hex set screws. No problem getting them tight.

Question: is their a NEC spec on the tape used to insulate these splices? I think (dubious) I have read somewhere, likely here, that a two tape seal is specified.

We always use varnished cambriac tape, then rubber linerless and last electrical tape. The three layered together work well.
