I've got a "5" horse compressor on a twenty gallon tank. The motor is strictly 220volt. I'd like to sell it since I have a larger compressor. I can't get any interest in selling or trading due to the 220v motor.

Are there any 220 to 110 converters that would be feasible to purchase? I'm guessing not, but my knowledge of electricity is not real strong.

Can you post a picture of the nameplate? Many motors can be connected for either 240 or 120, and the instructions for the various connections are often on a sticker or plate on the motor.

The converter youre thinking of is actually called a transformer and buck boost transformers are the specific type usually used for motors in this situation. For your specific situation you would need a transformer with a 2:1 ratio(120v primary, 240v secondary). Using the ratings on your motor's nameplate which says 15a(which is about half of what is listed in the NEC FLC chart for a 5hp motor; this is probably because most manufacturers grossly over rate their motors), u would need a 5-6kva transformer. This size includes approxamately 25% extra capacity which is needed for motor starting 'in-rush' currents. In general, transformers should be slightly oversized for the load to prevent saturation of the core.

Keep in mind that when voltage halves, current doubles, and thus the transformer will draw double the current of the secondary, on the primary 120v side. In your case, this would be approx 30a of 120v power while the motor is running. And during starting, the in rush current can be 6-8x as much. Which also needs to be factored into the circuit(such as the size of the breaker).

Taking all this into account, one big question comes to mind:

Is your 120v source circuit large enough to handle the above calcs? Probably not! In which case i would run a new circuit for the compressor!

And having said all this, transformers aren't cheap, and factoring in the required breakers/disconnects, wire, etc, for a separately derived system, it would be cheaper to either wire in the proper 240v circuit, or get a smaller 120v rated motor!

Or, more importantly, what a replacement motor in 120v would cost. :)

EDIT: Just noticed you wanted to sell it. It is probably not worth more as a 120v compressor since it would require 30A @ 120v, which would be very uncommon... you would still have to run a dedicated circuit for it, and it'd be much more expensive to run.

That's really what I needed to know. Trying not to invest any more into this since I want to sell it. I will just be patient.

If people don't want it because it's 240 Vac....chances are they really don't know what they want.

I can't imagine having a 120Vac compressor....unless it's one of those little portable pancake jobs.

And if it weren't portable I'd completely agree with you. It's a great mid size unit so someone will eventually take it.

People who dont want a 240v compressor dont know what theyre talking about!

Watts are are watts, it does not matter what voltage the equipment is.

Yes, but the amps would be twice as much. I'm referring to running the circuit required... unless you know of a garage with a 120V 40A outlet somewhere? :)

A 30A 120V compressor would still require the expense of running a new dedicated circuit - one that would be far more rare than a 20A 240V outlet. You would need a larger gauge wire, so it would be more expensive to run than running a circuit for 240. So there would be no benefit to converting to 120V.

In case it wasn't clear from my second post or what wyliesdiesels said, I was referring to the cost of running the circuit and not power consumption which is obviously the same (essentially) whatever the voltage.

Also, where did I say 30A circuit? My post says 40A (guesstimate).

That motor is about equal to a real (baldor or the like) ~3hp motor. From the 230v and 15amps, then you have to account for the efficiency losses, this is what people usually overlook.

Chaznc, I don't follow the selling part. Are you trying to sell just the motor or the entire compressor? How are you advertising the motor? I would advertise it as a air compressor motor. Then most importantly, what are you asking for it price wise?

It would be a decent motor if someone wanted to build a small compressor. I personally don't think it has much value though. As others have mentioned, a transformer is not going to be a feasible option, unless you find one used. I actually have a 5kva transformer sitting that here that you could have real cheap. But shipping would not be economical (weighs ~100lbs).

745w = 1 HP. 240v x 15a = 3600w. 3600w / 745 = 4.83HP

What you are missing is the efficiency coefficient of the motor. Usually between 0.6 and 0.8.
So HP=(230v x 15a)*(1hp/746watts)*~0.7=3.2hp

I've got the whole compressor for sale. Several people who have called or emailed hang up when I explain the voltage. I was hoping to get $150 to $200 out of it.

Yea, I bet the voltage is killing it for a lot of people, especially on that size of a compressor. That is really a home owner portable compressor, so typically 120v. If someone was serious enough to have 220v run for a compressor, they would most likely get a larger stationary compressor.
