I tried to do some digging, but the only thing that came up was a slickdeals.net mention of this Costco set - it was the same price ($120) last February. In other words, there's no need to panic and buy on an impulse, this deal likely won't disappear too quickly. *calms self down*

From McMaster Carr, the same sized case is $78, and each drawer is about $16. Sooo, it would cost $142 + shipping to purchase such an organizer w/o the fastener assortment!

Looking at the Costco set...I've got a pretty big assortment of nuts, bolts, washers, etc. What I like about the Costco set is all the other stuff--zerk fittings, nylon washers, roll pins, hitch pins, grommets, cap screws, etc. etc. etc.
That set would last a lifetime.

I'd love to get this for my shop. Having all these fasteners at hand would save a lot of time in trips down the street to the hardware store!

mostly Japanese motorcycles and small cars. But Always I have some small project where an assortment like this would come in handy. When I'm fabricating stuff I can design it to use the hardware at hand a lot of times.

I'm not only the guy in the neighborhood that all the kids bring their stuff to get fixed, I'm the guy in the neighborhood that all the DAD'S bring their stuff to get fixed!

My son is 13...three years ago he had his school science fair. We made a wind tunnel to measure the effects of air resistance on vehicles, using a 1/18 Corvette and Hummer, and modified the Hummer by lowering it, building an air dam, headlight coves, etc. etc.

We used a furnace fan I grabbed from a house getting a new one about 20 years ago (I was 17), some plexiglass sheets to make the box/tunnel, some L-brackets and angled metal pieces to fasten the plexi to the base, sheetmetal (pop riveted) to make directional vents to smooth the air as it came off the fan and went into the tunnel, used an arm mounted to a fish scale and attached it to the cars to measure drag, and fastened it all to a piece of plywood.
The only thing I had to leave the shop to buy was the fish scale.

My son often says my shop is like Home Depot--it's got EVERYTHING!

I like an assortment of fasteners for bikes, Honey-Do fixes, skate boards, mini bikes, 4-wheeler (my son has bought himself a bunch of toys...several of them motorized), etc. etc. Plus my vintage vehicles. I borrowed the neighbor's lawn mower, and the throttle cable had been totally rigged over the years and had a real finicky sweet spot... A couple clips, a self-tapping screw, a pop rivet and a few metal brake-line tabs had it working smooth and perfect.

OK. my order arrived today. The order was placed on the evening of Nov 5th and was here when I got home form work on the 11th. Quick shipment on Costco's part.

My first observation was how heavy it is when I went to pick it up. I think I saw somewhere it weighs 60 lbs. The Thorsen shipping container box was marked "Made In China" so the country of origin has been resolved. Inside the shipping box was a nice retail box with nice graphics with a telescoping box. I lifted off the top and found nice packing foam board to protect the metal cabinet.

It was tough to lift the cabinet out of the box (no handles) but I managed and set it on a work bench. The metal cabinet and drawers are very nice. Inside the metal drawers are plastic tray dividers. What you see in the store are metal dividers. The top two trays which had heavier hardware had some damage with the plastic dividers.

The fasteners are all bagged but intial thoughts are they look pretty good. I think the 3 bar mark on top of the bolts represents grade 5 fasteners.

I called Costco's regarding the two plastic tray damage (they would be fine as is but it is new). A intelligent english speaking CSR indicated they would contact Thorsen's to send me replacement trays and would confirm in 48 hours that the parts were being shipped from Thorsen's.

While not US or German made, the cabinet/drawers themselves appear to be worth the money alone. After I unwrap the fasteners if I have any additional thoughts I will pass along.

Mine came Monday night and was marked Made in China as well. I'd bet money the hardware is also made in China, it's not the best quality but is decent. I saw similar setups with used containers and shelf hardware in Carlisle and Hershey going for 80 - 100 (no hardware included and a long hump back to the truck). It's not bad, defintiely worth the money.

Anyways, Griot's says that the organizer's fastener selection is manually added to the case. If they did in fact source a USA-made drawer and case set (maybe the one from McMaster Carr is USA made??) and hand-pick and full the drawers, their price makes a bit more sense.

Interesting catch Stuey. One other thing is this: Do the adjectives "USA and German-made" apply to only the grade 5 and grade 8 fasteners and/or limited selection of "fittings, connectors, retainers," etc. Or do they cover the "more" bit as well?

Syntax and word choice can be everything in ad copy.


At any rate, Chinese or American-made, for the time to assemble that kit, it may well be a good deal for some. You certainly can't beat the convenience if you need the stuff when you need it!

So, go ahead and continue to uphold the merits of something made in China that can also be made here.

Your Chinese product probably wholesaled for 50% (or less) of the price you paid for it, while the USA sourced item would wholesale at 10% off of retail.

Retailers keep the price the same, but squeeze vendors for lower prices... prices that can only be met offshore.

Hopefully, your job will be outsourced, then you can ask "What happened?"

Good thread guys. I have an organizer that a friend gave me years ago. I wanted a duplicate and ordered one from Harbor Freight before checking the size.

Needless to say the newer one was smaller. Still cool for the price but smaller. I would like to snag a kit like this.

Has anyone emailed Thorsen, or are we assuming that everything is made in China based on the stamp on the packing box?

It is interesting to note that Griot's distribution center is 30 miles away from Thorsen's company headquarters in Indiana. This really had me hoping they were the same thing.

McMaster's Thorsen Standard (friction drawer slides) and Heavy-Duty (ball-bearing slides) cabinets are both made in the USA at $80.37 and $135.76 respectively.

You can also get a lock for an extra $11.75

Looks like the drawers are also made in the USA, whether they be steel or not. Compartments in polsytrene and polpropylene are also made in USA.

We used to buy off of this company a few years ago http://www.arrowindustrialsupply.com/ They carry the same type bins and do say they use US products. The thing is though is that their bins are gray and not red. Not anything some sanding and paint wouldn't take care of. Look under "Storage equipment" The bins can be adjusted to suit your needs.
