If you're going to use it, and a LOT of guys here will disapprove;

I'd tap that base plate so I had three or four 1/4-20's sticking up to use to level it off/keep it from peeling off the base, wedged up against the bottom of the vise...and use the hell out of it.

Do not be skeered. Many have worked much hard with much less.

This lost me completely... care to try again? (Or maybe I'm just tired... :dunno:)

Since the swivel base is cracked I think he is suggesting a way to make a fixed base to support the vise.

To the OP:
You have either a paper weight, $3-$5 dollars in scrap iron, or a vise you should have not emotional attachment to so you can abuse as needed without straining your conscience.

It appears to be a run of the mill Chinese vise. You could try to braze the part back together, but unless you want the the practice I don't see a reason to. Its not a rare or expensive vise.

You had the thread title all along . . . . vise JUNKY !!

McGyver a method to secure it, or fix the broken piece to become your anvil. Beat the tar out of it until it totally breaks apart. Then scrap it. :D

Alright, he owes you a nice mid 60's American made vise. Look up columbian d45 for instance. That is comparable style vise that will last you(roommate with some training on how to use a vise) for next 20 years or more.
