This seems like a decent deal for 20 bucks off. I have a cheapo set from the autoparts store, and have been looking to upgrade. These seem well made and extra heavy duty, and the sale price brings them down to the Harbor Freight price range.

It's a deal of the day, so today only.

I might run over the the local store to physically take a look at them first, before I pull the trigger on them.

I ran over to the store to take a look.

The middle "yellow" part of the stand is nice and meaty. Heavy duty.

But the "black" part of the stand seems no better than the stands I already have. I guess the difference between typical 2, 3, and 4 ton jack stands is that middle "yellow" part. The "black" part seems like standard sheet steel, the same as the 2 or 3 ton jack stands.

I have had them for about 8 years now, have served me very well.

Agreed, I've got a pair or two and my boss has probably 3 sets at the shop. Not bad, nothing special though. I'd rock 'em for $30 without a second thought.

Those look nice. I like the "ratchet" type over the three position. I have two of each and curse every time I have to pull the pins on the older two.

That is disturbing-doubly so because I have a pair much like them (Craftsman).

I shop at HF for certain things, knowing thier QA it what it is and what I buy might take a bit of tweaking...no problem, I can do that knwoing it up front. My hard rule there however is not buying anything that can kill me if it fails.

I'm wondering now if I have to start extending that elsewhere too.

A bit paranoid? Maybe. But for cause.

If its your time it's your time.
Falling on a pencil or drinking too much water can kill you.
Even hydrolic lifts fail from time to time.
Guess you can build your own bullet proof ones, or just take it in for the oil change.

Just read the story. Man. I am always nervous working beneath a vehicle, regardless.

I have never seen the red dye [penetrant?] mentioned there, says should be available at big box stores. I mean, I know about the dyes, but I haven't seen them for sale. On the other hand, I've never thought to look for it. Anyone ever find it at HD or Lowes or wherever? I'd pick some up soon.

I own and operate Huntsville Car Scene.com, and that was my friend that almost bit it when his stand failed. The takeaway that we got from the whole experience is something that applies to almost every tool you use--check it regularly for signs of failure.

My father recommended the dye, but he used to do stress testing of steering components for Ford back in the day. I know these days there's x-ray and a whole host of other tests. I was also wondering about the dye since I've never seen anything specific for these type of tests either, but he said it should be available. :dunno:

I always double up on my jacks, but don't really have an idea if they would hold up on the impact force if the primary failed. As for the dye, it's called spotcheck, you can buy it at Grainger. Here's a video explanation of how to use it:

I never use jack stands without wood blocks to take the load if the stands fail...

These jack stands are $29.99 again, on Craftsman Club Saver Days pricing. Very well made for a sub-thirty dollar price.

I got a set for about $30 a month back via the local deals, seem fairly well built in comparison to some of the junk ive seen. Not anywhere close to the quality of my 10 plus year old 3.5 ton pair of craftsman professionals (label worn off, but fairly sure they were made in usa) but decent.

Actually on way to store right now to collect these, as I ordered the other night for $30 less the $5 discount coupon thingee that was a hot deal last week. I think with points, I'm $24 out the door. I figured they can't be worse than HF, and nicely bridge the HF 3T and 6T options.
