Ok so we got our Volvo alternator done last week. Well today, the trunk wouldn't open and now have to use the key. We said OK no biggie. Then, the gas gauge say empty and the light is flashing. We knew we had at least a half tank. Go to the gas station and the gas cap cover won't unlock!!! We were like what's up with this car?!?! Please help us!!! It is a Volvo 2002 S80.

Now for our Ford 2002 Explorer. Driving down the road today and the ****** starts slipping. It has been for a while but not as bad as this. Keep going and now will not shift past 1st gear. That needs a new transmission I'm sure.

Main thing is our Volvo. Please help us!! I think it's a fuse. I cannot find any burnt ones though!

Burn the Volvo before it develops the 3rd-gear shift flare.

Seriously, the P2-era cars end up being more trouble than they're worth...which is depressing, because the drivetrains are bulletproof. I had an '01 V70, and after 275K the engine was still purring, but the rest of the car was falling apart from known faults.

As far as fuses, check them for continuity with a VOM if you have one you're unsure about. Matthew's Volvo Site was my prime source of info for troubleshooting the wagon - if someone has had it break on them before (and they have)...they'll have the answer. For parts, IPD in Oregon rocks.

Hmm...Our Ford is on it's 4th transmission now. Our Volvo Chassis is good but everything else just seems to be falling apart.

A Volvo is a Ford. Ford own Volvo for many years.

We have one Ford and one Volvo. Both mistakes!!

From '99 to '08 - which incidentally are the years to be avoided :p

I have no idea about newer Volvos.

It's a shame, because the engines and overall mechanical feel is amazing - after that many miles, it'd still do 100mph if asked and average 30mph on the highway (though not at the same time, to be fair ;)) It was quieter internally than my Ford with nearly 100K less on it at the time.

However, everything else would fail - electrics, evap. system, master cylinder seals, A/C fan clutch, TPS, AT servo cover, etc, etc.

Try rebooting the rear module. It's behind the left side panel in the trunk. If you look at the fuse chart, one of them back there is for that module. Take it out for about 10 seconds, then put it back in.

Ford own Volvo from 1999 to 2010. Ford also used to own Austin Martin, Land Rover, Jaguar, and part of Mazda. Ford recently sold all those brands when it needed money.

If the alternator went bad it could have wrecked the battery on the way out, charge and test the battery.

Automatic transmission first I like to do is change the fluids and filter.

Cleaning up all the electrical contacts can help sometimes, pull the fuses one at a time test and replace to clean contacts.

I've bought a bunch of the LED fuses, when the fuse blows the LED lights, but haven't gotten around to swapping them into our cars. Just pull and put back though wipes the contact clean pretty well.

Battery is only 2-3 years old. Just got new alternator too

I know on some S60's if the battery gets too weak, the electronics go crazy sometimes. But I would do some more diagnosis before throwing a battery at it.

The 5R55Ws,Ns and Ss have problems with the servo bores getting wore out and have 4 choices.Causes shifting problems with this problemA couple are find a good used case or a new case,a servo with two o rings.Lot of times it is much easier to have the bores drilled out with a jig and insert a sleeve. There are two differant length sleeves. The transmission gets removed and gutted to do the sleeve option.
Don't let this guy work on your car

If you want to run with a Volvo buy something from 2000 and prior. Preferably 94-97 850's. The 98-00 70 series is an updated 850 with more electronic gizmos that fail, but ergonomically they were better.

*****, Volvo definitely built some bulletproof cars back in the day that when you get in you don't think "cheap" like the Hondas and Toyotas of the day.
