Rolling workbench/tool storage anyone built one?

With my 2 car being a cluttered mess i have decided to put up a garden shed and move my longspan shelving and car parts into it, this leaves me with no where to store my tools.

Because i rent i have been thinking about building a rolling steel framed work bench with drawers and cabinets to hold my smaller tools, it will also have a hitch mount on one end for my vice, bench grinders and bench drill.

Have any of you built something like this? Any idea's or tips would be appreciated

Here's a pic of the current setup, although there is a shadow board on the back of the current workbench now.

Find an industrial salvage yard in your area. You may find a bench that is setup or a dock cart that you can use as the base.

I built a bench with enclosed storage and drawers, you could reduce the size and add casters if desired. Scroll down to post no. 268 here to see photos and description: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50406&page=14

See it in a video here: (first video) http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=140674

Thanks for the links to your bench, its certainly given me some idea's

Thanks for the tip, that may be just the starting point i need.

i'm guessing you dont have a tool box, and storeall your tools on the shelves.. :dunno:

I have a small cruddy one with a top box that are a jam packed mess, i need something more organised that can be moved easily, the current shelving will be in the shed out back so this would be replacing all of that.

depending on your tool storage needs i was gonna suggest a HF 41" roller cab.

or 2 of them ( with casters removed) and use them as a workbench base.

toss in HF cart, and you're mobile.

I recently built a rolling cart with worktop out of pallet wood. In my case, I had a bunch of smaller toolboxes that I wanted to group in one place.

I'll post up a picture later, maybe it will help.

Good idea and i would appreciate the pics but i will more than likely be going with a steel frame because i'm definatly not a woodworker:sad:

I should have mentioned we don't have HF here (i live in Australia), to build something like that with half way decent rollcabs over here would be pretty expensive so i'll probably have to fabricate something myself.

Thanks for the idea's guys

It's not a bench but I did build a work table, it's about 4'x6'. I used a couple of kitchen base cabinets with a 2x6 framed 3/4" plywood top. It also has a small frame on the bottom with a pair of casters on one end so I can pick it up and roll it around.

There's a few pics towards the end of my refurb thread in my sig.

I have 4 work benches that roll around in my shop. They are all repurposed kitchen and bath cabinets.
This is the big one and it carries a lot of stuff in the drawrs and cabinets.

The other three are used for paint supply storage, layout and socket wrench storage and welding and grinding.
I scored two of these at a yard sale for 15 bucks each...

This one is made from a bath cabinet my wife picked up for free.

I cleaned it up, built a drawer for the dummy face, put it on casters and added a 3/8th's inch steel plate top.
You will notice everything is on casters...

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Almost all tool boxes are on wheels these days. It seems like what most guys like to do is have a large 44"+wide main box with work surface to store tools. Then have a smaller ~26" wide tool cart to push around when you need to take to tools to the work.

Seems like lots of folks on here like the Harbor Freight 44" bottom for ~$350 and the HF 5 drawer cart for ~$150.

Here is a lateral filing cabinet I cut down and welded into a repurposed computer laptop charging station.

Thanks for the idea's guys, its certainly given me a lot more to think about.

The kitchen and bathroom cabinets would be a pretty cheap option, they quite often turn up cheap or free around here. The lateral filing cabinet is a cool idea too but they don't seem to come up for sale often around here.

I just found these steel kitchen drawer sides with runners for $4 each, i could also fold up some sheetmetal to form the rest of the drawer and rivet them in. Do you guys think they would be suitable? I could also put some beads into the bottoms to stiffen them up.

sorry didnt realize you're not in the US

for something "on the cheap" i'd be doing some dumpster diving, cruising the street on trash day

thats where all my garage stuff, with the exception of toolboxes, have come from.

i dont buy any new "furnishings" specifically for the garage, it's all salvaged/repurposed

No worries mate, I just updated my info to make it easier. I didn't realise where i live was blank, sorry about that.

Good idea with the scrounging for gear, there's some pretty cool recycled gear on this site. Speaking of which I was just given a large storm drain grate that will be repurposed into a welding table that will be housed outside behind the 2 bay.

Due to both my project cars being major rebuilds i will be constantly using different tools which is the main reason i was thinking of purpose building it. Just getting the tools sorted out properly will be a huge improvment, i'm so sick of not being able to find anything.
