My darling but perfectionist wife (how does she know it's 1/32" off, she doesn't have a ruler?) and I laid about 760 sq ft of vct over the past 3 days. We laid 1/4 of the floor on day 1, 1/2 on day 2 and the rest the next morning. White and black checkerboard Armstrong Excelon. First surprise was how quick the Henry's glue was ready to tile. Clear and tack free in about an hour in 80 deg. TX heat. Second surprise was how well it stuck. Once you hand pressed the tile in position it ain't comin up sept in pieces. I verified this several times due to miscalculations. (you would think 1 black, 1 white would be easier to keep straight.) Floor came out looking great though. I included 2 strips of black between the posts of my lift for drive in alignment ease.

Spreading the glue was kind of a pain because it was hard on the knees even with pads and the glue kept growing little "buggers" as I spread it which had to be scraped off the trowel. Laying the tile is pretty easy as long as you are VERY careful to make sure each tiles edges are COMPLETELY abutted to the previous tile. finished by screwing 1 1/2" aluminum angle to the door opening drive over edges using concrete screws.

Job cost was
1. Tile $500 at HD
2. Glue (5 gal.) $35 at Lowes
3. 1 1/2" aluminum angle (30') $13
4. Nice dinner for my seat cover $75

Just finish my Vct tile garage also. Same size 760sq/ft. Thanks for all the tips on Garagejournal.com . I hope budl doesn't mind I tack on a few pictures to his post. I haven't added sealer or polish yet. Needs another 2 days for the glue to dry. I bought the tile from lowes.com and delivered to my local store. It said 3 weeks for delivery but took 5 business days. :bounce:
Thanks Ron

Looks really nice! Smart move on the rows of black tiles for parking on. These stain pretty easily.

Nice work, question, did you put tile under your lift base or cut the tile around them. Can the tile handle a heavy load?
Thanks

Great job! What a fantastic example of how a DIY VCT tile floor can come out looking sweet with a little bit of planning and some hard work. Love the black strips - good thinking.

I love the VCT look. Great job. I'll be following in your footsteps one of these days...

rwhite692 - I'm also in the central valley. No problems with the heat causing tiles to lift?

:3gears:About the wheels on my 62. I catch some flack about them but------I don't like the "all wheel/no tire" look and the car rides better with more rubber under it, it has a C-4 suspension and brakes and I haven't found any 15s with the backspacing to keep the tire inside the fender and fit over the vette disc brakes. I've been running these wheels for 9 yrs and I'm open to suggestions. Might go with 16s or 17s max. Whataya got?

Bud

P.S. It also has an LS1 and 6 spd T-56

Gygeneral.

I cut the tiles to fit around the lift. Didn't want tile compression or breakage to cause a problem with the lift base mount. Tiles cut easy with heavy duty scissors or tin snips or hobby knife if you heat them up with a heat gun. They tend to break if you try it cold.

By the way, Armstrong, on their web site recommends NOT rolling the Excelon tiles after laying. Don't know why but they are kind of brittle when cold so if you have a floor irregularity I can see how you might crack one.
