Another site I like is gsalr.com for looking at what's close. I've put myself on a five mile radius since it's so easy for me to burn through an entire tank of gas.

Well, here are my weekends pickings, not too shabby considering it was 109 on Sat.
First the flea market:

Some good vintage Proto, and a set of Mac Sabina gunsmithing screwdrivers ($10)
and my $7 estate sale score:

The ferret is date coded '60, and the industrial grind off is dated '44

Here are some better shots of my auction score from Sat. I plan on using the condenser with fan and shroud on my shop compressor for a diy cooler setup. The York can be used as an engine driven air compressor for air tools, air suspension or airing up/down tires. Lots of good switches, a volt and amp meter, Dayton ac motor will get used on something. I will save the Sun cabinet for repurposing later and if anyone wants the under dash air component, just pay shipping.

Scored a older craftsman tablesaw with sawstop fence and wings on CL for $120. Going to remove one wing and replace with a craftsman router table top.

Today's haul is probably gonna be the best so far for me.
I responded to a Craigslist ad showing a couple toolboxes for sale priced at $100 and $200. They were a few miles from home and the seller responded to my message while I was out.
These boxes were stuffed in a shed and it was a job just getting to them and getting them out,but I believe the sweat equity is well worth it.
The boxes themselves are Craftsman,MAC,Huot and Remline.
To my surprise all the tools were included!! https://plus.google.com/photos/106928859612271645253/albums/5887590825388637825?authkey=CPGnpsvk4s6QNQ

I put all the photos in a Picasa Album, hopefully they can be seen by all.
Here is just a few preview pics, like the Snap -on Section:

There is alot of MAC,Proto,S-K,Craftsman yet to sort and go thru.
Did end up with a 3/4" dr Craftsman Teardrop ratchet, some 3/4" drive SK's sockets.Right now still sorting and identifying.
I plan to list most of it for sale between here,Ebay and Craigslist.
I will listen any offers and can provide more details about anything there.
I am currently trying to get my 16 year old to catalogue, photograph, and begin the Ebay process as a part of his summer employment.I promised him half of the profits if he is willing to invest the time.
Thanks,
Andy

That was a great haul, congratulations!I saw that one this morning and had too much going on. That'll learn me.

nice score, I might be interested in some SK stuff - PM when you get it all sorted out

I always see all kinds of sales, etc. in and around Detroit but I never want to put in the time or fuel to go to them

$4 got me these two hatchets and a old Craftsman 1/4" breaker bar.
One hatchet is a plumb Boy Scout hatchet and the other is a Kelly Works. It is flat on the other side. I have been told it is a ship builders hatchet and a shingle hatchet. Does anyone know for sure what it is?
And how old is the Craftsman breaker bar is? It has BE stamped on the bar to the right of the name. No other marking on the bar.

Thanks, John

VERY nice score on those for only $4! the BSA hatchet is a yousuck for sure.

the "Long C" craftsman tools are basically mid 30's to Mid 40's

The Kelly is also a nice Hewing hatchet, and its old, but not "shipbuilding" old... and no it's not a roofing hatchet. The flat side is so you can chop a flat side on a timber. That style also has hardened steel inlays on the blade (you can see the difference in metal on the line parallel to the edge where the inlay was forged in) and the hammer face also has an inlay on it about 1/8" thick forged on. Tough hatchets; I like to put 28-32" light ax handles on that style for a great camp axe.

Nine4, I'll bet you can get that black rattle can run off using the Simple Green and paper towel trick to soak it loose/off... Be a shame to lose the SUN markings on that thing.

That's what I'm hoping. I plan to take good pics and duplicate them if I can't save them as they are. There is one deep scratch across the right side logo I noticed. Check the vintage tool box thread for a pic with the top **** off. It was only two lile 1/4" bolts holding it down and one of them had come loose already.

BE was the designation for New Britain made tools for Sears [Craftsman] from 1931 to 1947.

Hello all,

I think my favorite find at a yard sale is a mystery box of tools. I don't even pick through them much until I get home. Its like Christmas on a summers day. I hope the pictures post OK.

This is my first post to the site so I thought I should start by showing off this weekends find at a yard sale. I met this elderly gentleman selling off his father in laws tools. He had been a mechanic for Chevrolet back in the 30's and 40's. I was just after the 1931 #1 & #2 Craftsman tappet wrenches and a few sockets and he ended up selling me the entire lot for $4. Mind you this was late in the day so unfortunately the ratchets had sold. Still, there were still a lot of tools in the box. Here's a few of the things I got in the deal. The big surprise was at the bottom of the box buried under some dirt and sawdust. The Key to Chevrolet Performance.:D

Thanks Outlaw and chopper1 for the info.
I will have to look at that Kelly ax more closely.
I got my first "you ****".
I told my wife and she said "that isn't very nice" lol

The BSA hatchet is especially a neat find as I spent several years with my boys in scouts. Starting in Tiger cubs and ended up with Eagle Scouts!

The Chev key is a specialty tool and gauge set that Chevrolet gave out to its mechanics in the 30's. From what I found out about it, they put some priority parts into their cars to discourage the average mechanic from working on them. Like the Electrolock nut wrench for the distributors. It reminds me of when they started sneaking Torx screws into everything.

It was a great surprise. I found it dumping out the sawdust at the bottom of the box.

Looks to me like everyone is getting some great garage sales scores this year. And its early in the season yet!

You've got me there, 218fekim. Christmas CAN happen all year round on the side of the road. The thing I like the most about the free piles is that it irritates my wife. The problem is that I end up with a bunch of stuff in the shed and the yard and it ends up irritating me. That's when I host a free pile of my own at the end of the road.

I picked up a Craftsman 3-drawer rally box for $20 - picture is stolen from eBay, but mine is just like it. It wasn't a lot cheaper than a new Craftsman 3-drawer chest sells for on sale, but it seems to be built a lot heavier than the ones I've seen at Sears recently. Should work nicely for a little more organization in the road toolbox.

I also spent $3 on a radio for the garage so I have tunes while I work.

My first Plomb tool find DOE $.25

Starret inside caliper
3" Craftsmanvice $5 both

Vacuum attached pencil sharpener
$.75

2 Drawer file cabinet $8

Cool old late 50's early 60's

Briefcase had this neat old cardboard ruler that was dated 1946 and had the years calendar on it. Not sure if it was legit or not.
Pretty sad when this is all you can find after about 25 sales. Still had fun though.

Nice score on the DP vise! you don't often see them with the bolt down ears. most are Palmgren/Stanley re-branded from Sears...

It's unbelievable how many stops you have to make just to find one with tools. Then to find one with tools that are worth obtaining. Maybe I should start collecting Xmas decorations. I'd be a frickin millionare if they were worth anything.
