I was looking at a MAC set. Does anyone know if these are rebadged and who makes them? Any other advice?

You may want to look at the warranties before making a descision. Idk about Mac but Matco and SnapOn will both warranty taps and dies.

mac's current tap and die sets are irwin/hansen. mac will warrenty taps and dies. you can buy the same sets from irwin for about half the price. but warrenty is more of a pain. where the mac stuff you can just give to your dealer. thats why i have all snapon tap and die sets. mainly for the no questions asked warrenty. Taps and dies are the type of tool to not cheap out on. if your gonna use them alot then buy a good set. mainly for the warrenty.

Even compared to Amazon pricing I'm pretty sure the SO tap / die set has been more cost effective over the years for our shop.

+1 on the lifetime warranty on Matco taps and dies.I broke a Matco 6mmx 1.00 tap,Matco dealer replaced it with no problem at all.

The warranty comes from the company not the dealer. Snap On will pull a dealer's franchise for refusing a warranty.

Let me know how that works out. They wont pull a dealers franchise over 1 or 2 refused warrentys. Typicaly most dealers arn't too fond of warrentying peoples stuff that they don't know. If you buy stuff off them then they wont question it. But they don't make any money off warrentys and most of the time they have to sit on the money for a while till they get there credit back.

The Mac, Matco, Cornwell and Snap-On are all manufactured by Irwin/Hansen and all of them have the same no-questions asked warranty.
The decision to buy it badged as a Hansen, Mac, Matco, Cornwell or SnappOn should really be based on two things:
-what truck brand is most reliably servicing your shop
-how often do you expect to use them
Does the Mac truck visit your shop often?
If you break a tap or die can you afford to wait for the turn around time of exchanging it via mail?

That is the same exact set i have (snap-on). Awsome set great quality and it comes with all the drill bits you will need for every tap in the set. Very handy feature. Im not sure that irwin actually has a life time warrenty on their tap and die sets. http://www.irwin.com/support-services/guarantees There warrenty page is very vague and alot of loop holes. And another GJ user had them tell them there set is no longer warrentable even though it was origionaly sold with a life time warrenty! http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=109197

honestly if u want 100% warrenty buy snap-on or matco. my personal experiences have been great with both.

if they actually did that. then he wasn't warrenteing anything at all. Because theres tons of dealers around here that blow off people off the street. and also wont warrenty suff if you don't spend money with them. Ive never had a problem because i spend thousands a year with all of them.

I usually buy Widia or Cleveland or whatever McMaster-Carr sends out. NPT taps are usually about $30 or so a piece. Snapon has NPT for like $10. If they will warranty those for life, it would be HUGELY economical if they also work halfway decent. They don't list the material, but if they are only $10 I have to assume they are just carbon steel, not HSS. I may still buy a few to test, just in case it turns out to be the deal of the century.

I wonder how snap on would like a machine shop calling the truck every week with a handful of taps to warranty.
Snap-On sells 2 different lines. There are direct copies of the Irwin sets that are sold as blue-point. Then there are other sets with adjustable dies sold as snap-on. Irwin themselves don't seem to manufacture adjustable die sets anymore (at least in metric). Nobody else offers the adjustable die versions of the sets either (MAC, Matco, Cornwell etc.. are all simple rebrands). Most people wouldn't care about that feature though but just thought i'd mention it.
That said I have to be honest and say that the truck brand versions are a waste of cash. Unless your truck stops daily and is very well stocked you'll probably be better off investing 1/2 to 1/3 of the money that the truck sets cost into a Irwin branded set and if something happens just run out to the hardware store and replace the broken tap or worn die. The Irwin stuff is very cheap, usually $5-$6. You'd have to break a hell of a lot to recoup the costs and make the truck set worth it and if your truck is like most they stop once a week if not less so there really isn't much convenience to be had either.
