Quote/Mention feature

Other v-bulletin boards have a great feature that gives you a notification if someone quotes your post or if someone mentions you by typing your name with @ ahead of it. @Poster. The mention/quote shows up on the user's User CP, sort of like an inbox notification.

This would be useful for a thread like "Vises of..." where there are many posters. It's hard to tell when someone has replied to my post or is asking me a question without scrolling through everything.

If this is already a feature, how do I turn it on?

I ran a search don't know if this has been submitted/asked before.

Oh, I do subscribe, but that's only so useful.

In a thread like "Vises of..." for instance, sure, people will keep posting there. And the whole thread will pop up in my subscribed thread that someone posted. And I may or may not check. But with the quote/mention feature, someone a week later might say

@Aluminum13, hey, what paint color was that? or What model Wilton is that? or they'll quote my post directly and I'll get a notification that will let me know someone was talking to me especially. That'll get my attention.

Since I sometimes don't log in for weeks at a time, I have no clue if someone is asking me questions unless I go back and search through a few weeks of a new posts in a smattering a threads that I've said things in. With mentions, no issue at getting my attention.

Subscription works fine in a thread like this, since it's so small.

If you set the subscription to daily email alerts, you'll get notified and only see the newly posted items in the email.

This doesn't help with your original issue which sounds like you want to be notified if I mention you in a new thread or one that you're not subscribed to.

You are set to auto-subscribe to threads you post in though, correct?

One possible work-around would be to setup a Google alert for the keyword(s) and site:garagejournal.com

Yeah, I auto-subcribe to threads, but unsubscribe email alerts from very popular threads because I don't plan on reading them everyday anyway, or even every time I log on, but I WOULD if I knew someone responded to something I said or asked me a question.

That would make sense.

I think you just have to logon more often and work with what you have.

Well I understand this isn't MY site and if I don't like it I just have to deal with it, and I respect that. That's fair, I'm just a guest here.

That said, I'm unsure why this isn't a feature. It's very useful on other forums. I don't think it costs any money? It's probably just a checkbox that an admin has to check/uncheck or a bit of code that needs to be copy/pasted.

What it comes down to is: I'm not sure why you wouldn't want this feature enabled.

Pros:
- better communication among members
- probably better thread continuity as members respond to each other
- GJ users get a useful feature and thus are happier with the forum

Cons:
- potential abuse of mentions
- rare small glitches, but generally the "quote alert" clears itself after you've visited the thread
- hoardes of confused GJ users drive admins up the wall with questions cause they don't understand the new feature...which is fairly self-explanatory, but hey, I don't know how computer literate the typical GJ user is.

But rharman's suggestion of the google alert will probably do the trick, never tried their service.
