Hi, after spending a while looking around on here and only managing a couple of posts I have picked up enough tips and ideas to have a go at sorting my garage out.

It's 18' in length and 8'4" wide. It is located at the bottom of my garden in the middle of a housing estate. When we moved in 10 years ago we had the flat roof and door replaced then just got rid of all the previous owners ****.

I then installed all the old kitchen units and tops along the right hand wall after we ripped them out of the house and used the garage like this for a while.

I rented a garage from the council about 50yrds from mine to store parts, spares and all the decorating stuff, this meant I had got plenty of space to pull the car I was rebuilding inside when the winter set in.

So here is a picture of the garage I guess in its second guise;

So the garage stayed and got used like this for about the next 2.5 years until I completed the rebuild of my Mk1 VW Golf and I have now decided to give it a spruce up using some of the ideas I got from looking on the Garage Journal.

More to come......

I decided to just do the walls white and found some cheap vinyl matt white emulsion to use. I tackled it one wall at a time as I have a back injury and can only manage short stints.

So this is the first (left) wall;

After

I then decided I wanted to add some stripes, so I used a tin of black hammerite and a bright red emulsion tester pot I already had;

Masked up and painted

Masking tape removed

So that's the first part done, more to come....

So on to the end wall
Before

I got the shelf and all the **** took down and continued the theme around, put the shelf back up and extended it;
After

I got my tool box back in place and some hooks in to hold my paint gun, added a few bits of decoration to the shelf and bench - another wall done.

I decide to do the last wall in 2 parts as I had been struggling with my back;
Before

First part after with window frame painted too

Second part after

So that was the walls done, there were still some more things I wanted to do so - more to come........

I painted the cupboard doors black using the same black hammerite I used on the walls, I also painted the door moulding silver;

After

I didn't like the fact I could see under the units so I found a piece of skirting board left over from another job, cut it to size and screwed in place

Then, wanting somewhere to store blocks of wood out of side, I cut the last foot or so of and hinged it so I could stash them behind.

I refurbished some old speakers

And mounted them above the garage door

Then hooked them up to the two speakers on the new garage stereo which had been made redundant from its duties in the house, it now means I can connect my iPhone/iPod to it for better selection of tunes while I'm working

And that was me done, couple of complete shots to follow.......

This is an overall shot of how it looks now with some new carpet down, this whole project has cost me about £5!!

I would like to do something better with the floor but I'm tight so want to do it as cheap as possible lol.

My wife got me the 'Route 66' sign at a show we took the golf to so I got that fixed in place

And a quick before and after I did using an app on my phone.

After all that I have just found out that I won't be returning to work now due to my back injury! So I'm now going to have to accommodate my Snap-On tool box - which I would like to try and keep hidden, and I think in order to save £40 a month I'm going to get rid of my council garage, which means I am going to have to get my thinking cap on and decide how I can incorporate some more storage without making what I have already done look a mess.

Nice change! Nothing like doing these projects with nothing but what's left over. I got all my framing done without purchasing any 2x materials.

Damn! I was hoping you would save your bench artwork hehehe. Seriously though the change looks great.

Love to see more pics of the Mk1 you built. And is that a Corrado Steelie?

Dubber - the wheel is a G60 steel so yeah Corrado/Golf 2

Looks good I want to see pics of the Golf as well.

The golf is finished now as I had mentioned and I have taken it to a couple of shows and got some quite positive feed back on it.

Here it is sat inside the garage

Great job, looks super clean and simple. I really like the white walls. :thumbup:
Although I thought the original red carpet added a nice touch, seriously.

Thanks for the great comments chaps.

Red carpet had to go unfortunately, it was far from red at the bench end by the time the car was finished and also it got caught up on the exhaust of the Golf and started to catch fire so it had a rather large section cut out the centre quite hastily so as I didn't loose the lot!! I do agree it would have gone with the theme well, but like the new stuff it was free from a friend so it's hard to get picky with colour when your not paying lol.

Hello from me too.

Looks great, so much better than before. What's under the carpet?

Thought I'd show off mine whilst I'm here...http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=177397
Just in case you get any inspiration!

I quite like hunting down the bargains to keep the price down!

Under the carpet is just a concrete floor.

The garage is essentially a double garage shell split into 2 singles, I've tried so hard to get my next door neighbour to give the other half to me - he doesn't even use his really, I even offered to build him another in his garden!

Fantastic transformation - it's looking really great now. I think the new carpets definitely brighten/freshen the place up too.

Sorry to hear about your bad back - hope you can continue with the progress so far and want to do for the future.

Morning folks, can't believe its been over a year since last action on this thread!

Well work laid me off due to my back problem - their loss not mine! Ive since started my own valeting and detailing business and I'm making more than I was working for them so I'm happy.

That meant though that I had to find somewhere for my tools to go, I will never sell them so I had to have a rethink about how my garage was laid out.

I downloaded SketchUp and started playing.....

I drew up what i was starting with

The next 2 show what I wanted to achieve

So I set about pulling everything out

Cut my cupboards down using a table saw

I didn't take many pictures after that unfortunately. I bought some framing timber and a neighbour gifted me a couple of 8x4 sheets or plywood and 2 doors so I got the end of the garage boxed off and moved my tools in.

All my cupboards now down the one side of the garage

I cut a hole in this board and mounted a cupboard behind it

So that I had somewhere to hide my stereo

Cut a relief in the bottom of the board for my trolley jack to slide in

Recently I decided to decorate either side of the doors with number plates from old cars

And added a wheel/tyre rack inside to store a spare set of wheels

And thats it, I have sold the golf and the space is now filled with a new project.

Thanks for looking,
Ollie.

Very cool. I get claustrophobic just looking at that space! your ability to use your space wisely is quite impressive. Having a good workspace, tools AND getting a car inside!
