We started our 'Danish design' garage build in march 2011 and finally 1.5 years later we are in the finishing stages. During the process we encountered some frustrating problems and it has indeed been a learning experience both regarding building techniques and on a more personal level.

Starting point:

After some digging and putting blocks together + filling these with concrete:

The photo below shows the two "anchors" we made to stabilise the wall:

150 mm floor insulation (polystyrene) laid out with armouring grid for the concrete floor:

Fast forward to the roof construction.

And this is the finished look. As you can see the house roof is in need of a good cleaning but that'll have to wait a bit.

Last autumn I mounted the garage door and port. Both the door and port are made in Rusia and I'm quite happy with the quality and the price was 2/3 of similar German made products. The bricks on both sides are re-used from the house wall inside the garage. We did this because the bricks are no longer available since our house was build in 1976 and we wanted the garage to blend in as much as possible.

Your roof reminds me of being a little kid and crawling around with my gandpa on the roof of my grandparents summer house in Hejlsminde spraying some god awful mix of chlorine or something to get the algae off their roof.

Jim, You'd like Denmark! Asphalt and concrete driveways are about as common as a garage with 2 cars parked in it is in the United States

Here are some inside views from when I insulated the walls. Before doing the walls I insulated the ceiling with 200 mm insulation.
As you can see from the photos I am the happy owner of an old BMW airhead and one of the major reasons for building the garage is to start a major overhaul/restoration of it.

Along the end wall I will build a work bench and have found some very good inspiration on this site. Also my tools will get out of my toolbox and get a place on the end wall.

After insulation it was time to mount the OSB 2 plates as shown below. I was really in doubt which plate material to use but I'm quite happy with the OSB. The plan is to paint them all white to improve light conditions in the room.

All the work I do on the garage is mainly during the nights after our two daughters (1.5 and 4 years old) have been put to bed. So progress is a little slow at times.
Hopefully today the plates for the ceiling will be delivered. The material supplier is a company called Troldtekt and the plates which are 240 x 60 cm's are a mix of wood chips and concrete. Troldtekt is a danish company and their products are quite common in Denmark but I'm not sure how known it is internationally??

I expect to have the plates mounted during a week or so and after that light fixtures will be mounted as well as sockets in the walls. Also I still need to finish some insulation details above the garage port and door. More to follow

Some progress. Together with my father in law I mounted the Troldtekt acoustic plates on the ceiling as shown below and I'm quite satisfied with the result.
Next big task is installing light fixtures, wall sockets and connecting the electrics. All this will be done by a certified electrician so I avoid breaking any national laws and regulations
Furthermore I'm currently checking prices on ceramic tiles for the floor and I might have found some nice dark grey ones at around 5 USD per square meter.

The supplier is portfirmaet.dk Very nice people to do business with and I would recommend that you take a trip to see their showroom with products on display.

I know the number of different port suppliers and product brands is really sort of a jungle. So far I'm happy with my purchase.
Only things I would do different are the door width (should have planned for one that is 10 - 15 cm wider). Also I should have spend the extra cash on a "turbo" version of the port motor.

BTW: I think this thread is soon ready for an update since some progress has been made....

May I ask which dimension the garage door has and how much you paid? Is it Alutech?
I'm about to buy one and currently I'm looking at a Teckentrup.

Outer dimensions of the door are 800 x 2150 mm and yes the brand is Alutech. Price was 3783 Dkr.
The port is 2500 x 2150 mm and the price for this was 5813 Dkr (excl. the motor).
Both the door and port have 45 mm of insulation.

Thanks! It has been a BIG challenge. Surely it would have been a much simpler task if the location had been more detached. It also took a lot of consideration and planning to decide on the location on our property. But I still think we made the best choice.

Me too. In fact we are soon to embark upon a carport build project and this will have the same roof design.
