Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Finished the oil leak repair on a 2009 Buell XB9 and test rode it last night. I then repaired a wakeboard mount that came in the shop to be straightened and welded. I was able to straighten it, weld the supports back on it and shot it with some paint. I then put the rubber pads back on so the guy can come by and pick it up today.

While I was waiting for the paint to dry I cut some axle tabs out for my son's LJ. There is literally nowhere to strap the axle where the strap won't rub or get cut by a suspension component. I made some cardboard templates and cut them out last night. These will be welded to the rear axle so it can be strapped directly to these tabs when hauling in the trailer.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Recent redundancy has given me some time on my hands in between job hunting sessions. One task on my list was my free cement mixer. A good friend gave me this after he got frustrated with its erratic running and he went off and bought another one.

Its a Briggs & Stratton powered device and the problem was a loose carb which after re-tapping the holes for the mounting bolts started to run much more reliably! As you can see its is beaten to a pulp with its internal volume reducing by dents and a layer of hardened cement in the barrel. Its handle was a 1/2 inch extension bar taped to what is left of the old one! Lots of seams on the frame and engine case were split.

So using an air powered needle chisel and hard graft half a borrow load of cement was removed from the inside of the barrel and off the outside of the machine. Make sure you clean your cement mixer down after EVERY use!!!!!

After cleaning I stripped it down it to its parts for welding up of split seam, handle replacement and removed most of the dents from the barrel (I must have significantly increased it's volume and made much more circular in shape)

The engine was treated to fresh oil, look at the colour of the old goo that came out, and a new spark plug!

Once re-assembled the whole machine was given a couple of coats of smooth Hammerite paint to help keep it clean. After it's first post overhaul use I was pleased just how easy it is to clean and no paint has come off the barrel yet although I'm sure it will when it encounters some aggregate!

I finished restoring a 1991 Jeep Wrangler....

This just so happens to be the very first Jeep I bought.

Sold it 8 years ago, found it in a garage last fall and bought it back.

Side by side with my 89 Rock crawler

Added black trim to my top box to match the bottom. Also drilled a hole in the box to run power to the top box for my radio and battery chargers

Cut, built, sanded and stained a garden bench for the boss. Will finish it in the AM.

Also got to meet a fellow GJ'er when he came to checkout my father in law's old Snap On toolbox that he has for sale. Very nice fellow! (aren't we all?)

Lubed my composite ratchets I have yet to use. Internals look exactly like the Kobalt ratchet in the ridiculously low priced spark plug kit.

Ground 60 tungstens, well actually the same 10 six times over  Spent a few hours bum in seat getting a better feel for what my little inverter TIG is actually capable of on aluminium. Well worth the consumables to play around with it a bit, learnt quite a bit about the machine.

Sat at work for 12 hours. Got to spend some of that time on GJ. But all of this is so that I can spend money on my projects at home, on Monday.

I installed a fluid holder and work shelf. This unit from Summit is actually designed for motorcycle trailers, but I liked the look so I made it a wall mount unit.

Started building a small jib crane for my enclosed trailer. Making the boom a trolley style so I can pick up items inside and swing through rear doors and lower to the ground.
Will make my own trolley and attach a 12v winch.
I will get some pics up as soon as I figure out how.

Worked on this cane bolt to hold the garage shed door open. I wanted to get it done before it rained today.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

AC repair side job on a 2006 Suzuki Forenza
Complaint: No cold air from vents.

This customer was quoted $800 repair on this job from another shop.:wtf:

I checked it out and determined it had a stuck refrigerant control valve. This is a somewhat common failure in the V5 variable displacement compressor but is easily replaced. Unfortunately, this part can not be bought seperately, but I have a stack of used compressors and removed the rcv from a v5 compressor that had been replaced due to leaks on a 99 chevy lumina. There is a slight difference in the destroke rating on the various control valves, but not by only a few degrees F.

Recovered the refrigerant in the suzuki and went underneath the car and removed the snap ring and replaced the defective rcv. Evac and recharged to 23.5oz of refrig and it blows 42 F from the vents now with ambient temp 85F and 80% humidity with sun load...:rocker:

Note: Car has oil leak somewhere on backside of engine. Owner is aware.

$200 quick $CASH$ and a very happy customer....:rocker:

Second thought, check your motor mounts.
Third thought, I got nothing :headscrat

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Been a busy day

Started out replacing a front end on my daughters cavalier, started the rust repair, I'll paint it tomorrow, then threw all the left over siding and j channel from my recent residing work o the house up into the loft, from there I decided to install the window a/c unit, finished making yard Yahtzee game, cleaned up the garage as I had miscellaneous tools and **** laying around with all the projects I've had going. Squeezed in a 20 minute ride on the Harley then gave the bike a quick detail. Oh, and drank a few beers in my new cool garage...

Head down this way. It's pissed, poured, and drizzled everyday since Wednesday. The 4th was rained out, Friday the sun never came out, and yesterday, we had some major downpours in between the regular rain.

AND......The mosquitoes are officially out. The sumbitches are hiding out in the garage to get out of the rain  I don't know how many I killed yesterday. And the ticks are out. The wife had one on her the other day, then when Sam and I were coming back from the paint store, he was sitting beside me and I was petting him, and I felt a spot on his ear and he pulled away. I got him home and looked and sure enough there was a tick. I pulled it out slow and a hell of a chunk of his ear came with it. We don't have but just a few evergreens and he never goes around them, so the only thing I can figure is that he picked one up from the bean field behind us.

And for all of you that have dogs and/or cats that you put Flea and Tick stuff on their necks, make sure you check them out when they come in from outside. We put the flea and tick medicine on them religiously, or my wife does, every month, and Sam still got a tick. And it had to have been there for a while as it was buried in and about the size of my little fingernail and full of blood.

Check your Idler pulley if you have a serpentine belt. On my Silverado, I was driving home one day and I start to hear a knock and felt the truck jump a tad, then it was fine. I get home, pull it in the garage and shut it off and it shut off right now with a thud. I went to start it back up and it would turn over slow but had a hard knock to it. I let it cool down, went out later and started it and it started fine and sounded fine. Drove into town shut it off and same thing, another loud knock and the motor stopped instantly. I waited for a while, got it started, and drove to my nephews garage. I honestly thought I had a rod bearing going bad. My other nephew was there and I explained to him what was going on. He walked over to the truck, took off the serpentine belt, spun the idler and sure enough that was it. When it heated up, the bearings were wanting to seize. This was the steel idler at the top.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Put 3/4" foam board on the inside of my garage door. Temps have been in the high 90s, with even higer in the garage. I'm hoping the isul board helps keep some of the heat from radiating thru the metal door. Took a lot longer than I thought it would, but then, I move pretty slowly when it's that hot.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Not actually in the garage.... ...in the attic. Woke up early 0600 and remembered that we needed to run a coax line (cable) to one of the bedrooms. Normally wouldn't touch that in the summer (except on a rainy day) but we have AT&T Uverse coming out on Tuesday and we want to move the router to that bedroom (now an office/craft room).

I started to get up there and SWMBFAO caught me and persuaded me to install a CAT5 (network) line as well. Off to buy CAT5 and a couple of cover plates. Got the attic work done before it got too late. Now the CAT5 isn't letting me work with the printer :dunno: At least I know the problem isn't in the attic. The cable is new.

I got the right jug of my Saylor Beall 707 pump primed and painted. Still have eight more major components to paint before moving on to the tank.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Not sure if I should post today's activities, but here goes:

- replaced toilet seat in cottage, used every tool imaginable to get the rusted bolts apart. Finally drilled one out! Old one had probably been there for years.

- cleaned, labelled (with Brother P-touch label maker) and refilled the bottles the spice rack. Emphasis on label making to maintain some portion of my man-card. I took a picture for my wife. Available upon request only.

Having trouble with gout....other than hanging out on GJ, I needed a sitting down job (hence the spice rack). Toilet seat nearly killed me, but I wanted it done before my daughter arrived with her friends.

Good call an all accounts. You can't have women folk around and the toilet not be working 100%.

On the gout... I also have the same affliction so I understand your problem. I tried several things at about the same time and haven't had an attack in over a year. They are as follows:
1. Started taking Allopurinol (prescription only).
2. Started taking black cherry extract pills (available at the health food store).
3. Started eating a small container of yogurt most mornings.
4. Gave up on soft drinks. I found a study on the internet that said that there was a link between high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and gout. Soft drinks are very high in HFCS.
5. Started eating more rabbit bait (salads) and fruit. It ***** getting old.

Like I said it's been about a year and I have a few soft drinks but try not to have more than one per day. All in moderation.

Gave up on soft drinks. ==> this is the tough one. My wife makes sure I have cranberry juice at home, I am not so disciplined.

A colleague told me about allipurinol. Off to the doctor I guess, this is the second bout in 6 months.

Thanks for the other ideas...these are very doable as I love yogurt :)

Glad to hear yours is under control!

Next time You have a stubborn toilet seat, remember this: Get a hack saw and put in a nice new sharp blade. Turn the blade 90 degrees from the normal position. You can now slide the blade under the cap of the bolt and cut both off in a couple minutes easy peasey. Install new seat.
I was having gout- Doc told Me to get a can of sour cherries. I snacked on a few of those, gout gone by next morning.

Made a holder for my C-cell Mag-light.

Gotcha beat nuttz.......I grabbed one from a co-worker's toolbox at the shop who owes me money and can't even take subtle hints like 'Hey, where's my $40?'.

I'm holding it hostage until I get my $40 back - 8 month's is too long to wait. Bastid gross is nearly $70k a year.

In hind sight, it's most expensive flashlight holder I've ever 'bought'.

Re: what did you do in your garage today?

Need pics of this

I've done some searching the net, doesn't seem too difficult with my mig, a donor 26" (one from my mother's garage which I rode probably 20 years ago before I could drive) and a 20" which I bought from Walmart for $70. Couldn't see spending $50 for a used Craigslist 20" one.

Anyway, the 26" is stripped. Amazingly even though it was somewhat rusted, nothing broke when taking it apart. I guess except the chain which I could not get the master link to come apart so I shoved a flat head screw driver in it and twisted.

Fixed the wiring in the RV plug I replaced yesterday on the ex's van. I had two wires backwards.

Serves me right for reassembling it all yesterday without testing it first. It's not like I don't own a test-light, or haven't done electrics before, so it was my own fault.
