Disappointed in the big reveal since there was a video about these new impact wrenches posted on You Tube over 5 days ago. :wtf:

I'm a little let down too. I was expecting something new and exciting.... but in tools new and exciting is hard to come by I guess. Oh well, I hope the guys at trident sell the hell out of them.

These are the exact same as the new MAC's, same torque specs and all. Thats no big deal to me though, they are amazing guns. Everyone in my shop has slowly transitioned to these, and we have some guys who hate MAC tools using them.

I am quite happy about this actually, the guns are priced better than MAC's, and I prefer the Proto badging (not that it really matters but still.)

Me thinks the 3/8 is in the not so distant future.

just like the new mac rebadged impact. ive been a die hard snap-on guy had great luck with all of mine. and snap on has always been great about warrenty and have a great flat rate rubuilding program.

The way I understand it, you are not correct... I believe this series of Impacts was the first line in a long time which was Developed IN House by MAC/Stanley. Yes its made elsewhere but this is NOT a rebranded impact. Everything I hear about the MAC versions has been nothing short of spectacular. First impact in a long time to come off any truck which will give the MG line a run for its money.

Truth be told...if MAC woulda released a Green one, I would have owned one a while ago. Been trying to beat up my MAC guy to get him down to where I want to pay (where I got pricing on a MG725), this announcement just changed the game. I might become a trident customer sooner vs later.

Also nice to see they now offer the flat rate rebuild a-la SO.

This is the reason I bought my MG's considering just the magnesium housings are over $100 if you break it and send it in, its still just $95 or whatever for complete rebuild/to make it right. Glad to see its maybe turning into a trend.

I'm fairly certain that you're correct Dave. I have some inside contact with Proto through the blog I do some writing for. Awhile back the Director of marketing told me they were doing field testing on a new line of air tools the were developing them in house. He offered me the opportunity to participate, but not being one that uses air tools everyday, I didn't feel I was able to give him exactly the type of input he was looking for. He never said for certain, but every indication was that these were entirely new tools. I'm sure they're probably the same guns being sold as Mac, but even so, I don't believe the are a generic item with a Proto badge stuck on them.

If you notice the old Proto sockets verses the newer ones you will see the newer ones are much thicker because the metal is not the same quality. I like Proto tools and have quite a few. They are all used of course but they work fine. My Proto tools are impact socket set and large metric wrenches. I have even have the 36, 41, 46 and 50 mm wrenches. I bought them in Indiana and had to buy an extra bag to have them shipped on the plane. I got them so cheap it was worth the price of another bag and the $25 for the shipping cost. I got doubles and a lot more sizes I paid $150 and they were all like new.

The quality of everything has gone to pot if you ask me.

RCStocker: How old is older? Proto went from machined sockets to cold forged after the National Hand Tool acquisition in 1986. Could that be the difference you're talking about?

I think they were developed in house but in collaboration with the factory in Taiwan. Only way to explain the identical trigger and switch lay-out to the Cornwell impacts. The other thing I don't understand is why the anvils are extended so far away from the front of the impact. It makes an otherwise compact impact about half an inch longer than it needs to be.

This is the reason I bought my MG's considering just the magnesium housings are over $100 if you break it and send it in, its still just $95 or whatever for complete rebuild/to make it right. Glad to see its maybe turning into a trend.

Rebuilds are around $130 now.

The gun is awesome, no two ways about it. I have the J150WP (not the compact) and the only complaint I have (if you can call it a complaint) is that there is no protective rubber boot available for it. You can use a Mac boot though.

Here is my review:

I'm currently reviewing one of Proto's new air ratchets. Limited use thus far, but it seems stout. Long reach, user friendly, good power, etc.

yea MAC has red and clear boots for them, if you don't have a truck you have to call to order them however as they're not listed online but on the plus side I believe shipping is free. They're under $15 and USA made if memory serves.

3/8
AWP038-050C
AWP038-050C-R

1/2
PB050
PB050R

The compact is just the 3/8" body with a 1/2" anvil, primarily really on advantageous if you don't have 3/8" impact sockets.
