Well there's your problem...you're obviously confused about where the good parts of the country are. You see, the good parts don't have 60-70-80+% humidity like the south and the Midwest.

FYI, mine is running right now. Far cheaper and faster to cool the house off with it at night than to try the craptastic heat pump we have that literally can't bring the second story bedrooms below 80 without setting the thermostat to 60 and running constantly. As long as the daytime highs don't exceed the low 90s I don't even bother with the A/C.

Just because you have an older?/crappy?/poorly designed?/poorly installed heat pump system doesn't automatically mean that a whole house fan is the perfect solution to everything.

Not the perfect solution to everything, but a viable solution for many things, unlike the original supposition that all whole house fans are junk that serve no purpose in any situation.

As for my heat pump...yeah, it's ****. I've dealt with three buildings (2 in Indiana, and this one in CA) with heat pumps and all of them sucked. Though in the case of my current house there's more to it than just the heat pump. Regardless, the fan does a great job of cooling the house for less than the cost of running the AC or upgrading the system to a new hyper-efficient system (which would probably still cost more to run)

The fan does a great job of cooling if it's not hot or humid outside. Looks like weather data says it's 80+ in Walnut Grove for 4 months of the year. Seems like 4 months a year, it's kinda useless.

We have had one for years in our ranch styled house. I'd rather have the windows opened and the fan on. Nice air movement. A lot easier on our sinuses. You walk into some places and the A/C is jacked down so low......give me my fan. Love it.

Not really. The key is that it cools off nicely at night. Typically it works great up to the mid 90s. By the time we get upper 90s or into the 100s it takes to long for the temps to drop back at night, so then I will use the AC.

The only 4 months I don't use it are the winter months. :D

I also see that you're in Georgia. We don't have anything like the humidity you do. 80 degrees there is a sticky mess; here it's a nice day. I recall after being out here for a while I went back to Indiana for the first F1 race. I checked the weather and saw 85 as the high and thought it would be nice out. But I had forgotten that also came with 85% humidity.

One more reason I don't have any desire to live in IN again!

I'm quite aware of the humidity difference, even more so since I spent some time last month not too far from you in the central valley on vacation.
