Okay, so I was just at the Lowes in South Plainfield NJ (GOOGLE Map) and they had a 3 drawer 42" x 24" "heavy duty" workbench. The drawers are ball bearing, and it comes with a hutch, pegboard, fluorescent light, and power strip.

Price: $42.25, from $169. They also had a 2 drawer light-duty version for $100.

This is an incredible bargain. There were 3 or 4 left as of an hour ago. I was on the fence about it, so I'm going to see if I can convince my wife to let me buy one for the apartment, but she'll likely just laugh.

Brand: Kobalt, made in China.

Item#: 2218
Model #: LWWB08-30456

If that is the right price, you CANNOT pass up that deal. I've looked at that bench a few times myself. IIRC it has a pretty thick wood top.

There are a few reasons forcing me to hesitate and act responsibly.

1. I'm on the 3rd floor and don't look forward to having to lug this up 28 stairs. The box is bulky and likely over 100 lbs, so I'd have to open it in the car and make two trips.

2. I have enough clutter and need to start organizing things and putting things away better. This would just be another thing taking up space and getting in the way.

3. $43 is still $43 that I could spend on tools that could better serve me now and in the future.

I'll check back in a week, and if they still have a box there, I'll consider it meant to be,

Also, this may not only be a NJ thing. I checked Lowes' site and there's no mention of these tables, so they might be going clearance elsewhere.

Plus, I have an alternative setup in mind that I was looking forward to working on using supplies and materials I purchased a while ago.

****! I bought that bench last month when they had it on special-Pay $169 and get a $69 stool free. I'm running home to check the receipt. They should have a 30 day price guarantee, right?

How much longer are you going to be in an apt? That's got to be tough.

Vinko, Those are gorgeous, made in USA, and free shipping. Looks quite reasonable for what you get. Of couse, you got to shoot yourself when you put the first ugly scar in that beautiful surface!

Thanks Vinko, I build each one of those benches...The cool thing is that I use Minwax products and each year I retouch my personal benches and they stay Super. Thanks again for your comments! The business is going very well. I started in my Garage part time and now have a bigger shop.

Insanely expensive compared to these, but I liked this one when I saw it:

Vinko you gave me an idea. I think I am going to change the top out to a butcher block like the ones pictured in your thread.

John beautiful work. What do you think a 42"x24"x1" top would run me?

Stuey thanks again for the heads up again. A friend stopped by and he helped me with picking up the workbench.

So now when I get better I will put it all together and start modding it.

Hi Stanbo,
Thanks for the compliment!
Unfortunately, I don't do tops alone. With my current workload Iam sticking to the products on the site. Hope you feel better.

No problem John. More fun for me and the kids. I will source a piece locally and stain it in house.

Stuey, don't pass that up; store it elsewhere if needed....

Gets some friends with a truck to help; beer is good payment for most....

My buddy was going thru the same thoughts today. He is in an apartment and wanted one of the sets. It is also rough to leave something for 2 or 3 years boxed up.

Then again it could be a cool gift.

No problem! Too bad, you're now obligated to take a few photos once everything is setup and in good use. =)

As for butcher block tops, since you're in NJ, I'll recommend heading to Ikea and taking a look at what they have. Their 1" thick countertops are pretty affordable and look pretty good too.

The only place I could possibly store it is at my parents', and well, let's just say that they definitely won't be having any of that.

Some deals are better left for others.

Are these vises made in the USA? I wonder if anyone casts vises in the USA anymore? I'd assume so. We have a couple of, I think, Swedish or Dutch vises (which I provided photos of in a past thread), which we use for metal work, but I like the wood-working vise option and the 2nd to the largest table. I could see getting a lot of use out of that table in the years to come as my boys grow.

Hahaha will do dude. I am going to do the top and some graphics.

I also want to fill the void with a toolbox. If I don't I will just put **** there. :wtf:

I will do so. If you ever need some graphics done or a sign give me a shout.

I went to a different Lowes today to see if these were on sale. Unfortunately no.

I'm not even at home right now. I'm out of town visiting family, and I was prepared to buy one and leave it in storage with a sibling.

Anyway, I wish I knew how they decide when or how to put stuff on clearance. You NJ guys are just lucky i guess.

funny story: There was no indication of a sale, so I took the tag off the bench to get the price checked. The lady gave me a funny look - like the price is on the price tag, but you want me to check the price anyway??

I told my son about it and he just called me from Lowes in Tucson AZ and they were not on sale. Talked to the sales guy there and he double checked it in the computer and confirmed no sale price. Guy said not uncommon for clearance items to vary from state to state.

I'm fairly sure that the deal is either regional or store-specific, which is why I mentioned the exact store I saw the deal at.

However, on occasion, stores will clearance the same items at different times, such as the Hitachi benchtop tool line. I don't think that is the case this time, but it might be worthwhile to check prices at your local Lowes next time you happen to be there anyways.

Have you settled in the workbench enough to take some photos yet? :bounce:

Nothing yet. It is still in the box. I'm home with an injury and starting to feel better. I should be ready to set it all up in a couple weeks. Plus I have to add the toolbox from Sears.

Organization then I would like to tackle the full welding table. :bounce:
