Ready to renovate this old barn...

Hello everyone, just wanted to pop in to introduce myself! Name's Nick, bought a log home with a decent sized shop/barn a few months ago and I'm finally ready to turn my attention on remodeling/updating the shop now that the house has went though it's major updates.

It was previously used as an auto repair/race shop back in the 70s/early 80s (that, coincidentally enough, my father used to deliver parts to in his younger days and he and my uncles spent a lot of time in), and them spent about the next 25 years steadily declining in condition and use.

During our typically heavy Indiana thunderstorms, the joint between the old/new barn leaks considerably, so getting that dialed in is on the top of the priority list. The gutters also need repaired/replaced as they have lots of holes in them and have many high/low spots. Chimney leaks as well.

I'll get some interior pics later, but right now it's still full of our stuff from the move plus a lot of the previous owner's junk.

I don't have a solid plan yet as far as what I want to do with it. In general, I want the interior to be white and bright, and I want to retain the rustic look of the exterior.

I work for an automotive detailing supply manufacturer and detail cars in my spare time, so bright and clean are a must. Thought about epoxying the floor as well, but I think I've decided against that.

Any thoughts/feelings/suggestions are more than welcome. Glad to be here!

The only way to properly resolve that is remove the siding on the taller building and the roofing material from the shorter building and install proper metal flashing. I would then cover that with a much wider piece of bituthane (ice and snow shield).

Exactly! There is existing flashing there now, but the siding on the old barn is in such rough shape that all of the water is coming in behind the flashing, rendering it pretty much useless.

Thanks for your thoughts!

New garage door is in and working like a champ! The old one was so rotten that you could almost fit your hand through the gaps.

Failing siding.

3rd bay, currently being used for our traveling show setup for work, and the Dixie Chopper. :)

Shots of the main area. It's about 70/30 our belongings/junk the previous owner "bestowed" upon us. I've had many fires in the past 3 months.

Sink/toilet that runs off the main area, behind the 3rd bay.

Entry to the barn.

The source of the leaking issues is not difficult to spot lol.

Barn has 3 stall in it, one had ducks from the previous owner and the other two are still full of previously mentioned junk we were left with.

WOW, great looking place. Good luck with the restore/rebuild, looks like you have some carefull planning to do. I think I would start with a list of what you want in the long run and go from there with the basics first. Make it weather tight first, then take a room at a time. I am thinking you could just plan to replace the siding and ends of the barn with board and batt, get your flashing in the right places, take care of the water leaks first that way. Good luck. Later, Jeff

That's my overall plan Jeff. Watertight is at the absolute top of the list. That's part of the reason why everything is placed where it is right now. It may look like chaos, but everything is moved out of the way of where the water leaks!

I've rigged up some drip edge to act as a gutter inside. Channels the water nicely into a 5 gallon bucket that's easy to empty. :)

Wish I lived closer, I have a few projects some of that siding would look good on! That's going to be a huge space when you're done. If you don't mind would love to see a picture of the Log Home, also is that your pond I see in the first picture?

About 15 miles west of Ft. Wayne.

For future reference and assistance, you might want to add that location to your profile, or a general location.

That's a nice looking barn but does need some TLC. Get the siding and some flashing work done and it'll be weather resistant.

Yes, we have a nice little pond as well. It's about 1/2 acre and 15' at the deepest point. This is the only picture I could hunt down of the entire thing, this was after one of the monster rain storms we got this spring:

Done, thanks!

WOW ! It didn't look that bad in the opriginal picture !!

Be careful when you start climbing around on/in that barn. There could be some serious;y rotten wood that won't hold you !

The loft of the bard is actually in surprisingly good shape. My guess is the leaking started in the not so distant past as there is very little evidence of water damage in the loft of the barn or in the garage itself. At least that's what I'm telling myself. :)

Beautiful place! Only problem, I'd never get anything done with that pond there, and that's at least a 12 pack lawn..

Thank you! Believe me, working from home is VERY tough, especially this time of year. I try to close myself in my office and forget all the great things that are outside that I could be occupying my time with! Some days it works, some days...not so much lol.

Also, my mower is a zero turn so I've unfortunately given up the habit of drinking while mowing. I tried it the first time I mowed and spilled more beer on myself than I drank lol.

Keg attached to the mower with a tube would work!:beer:

Before I got too far along I might figure where I wanted to stop. The look and feel is worth keeping but might fix the elevations right off.

Using that decking was a slick idea, shouldn't have to worry about it weathering. I bet it was heavy as heck trying to put up there.

It was heavy, that's for sure!

Got a new man door in up today to replace the old one with a 3" gap under it.

Made some interior progress this week.

Got the old, mismatched wall surface framed out. Moved some receptacles, relocated the gas feed line. Insulated and got some drywall hung, taped, and got the first coat of mud on.
