Hey flash if vises are rare where you are at and you need one 110 is not bad at all but I would do a little negotiating first :). Simplex vises are pretty darn tough and stout.

Hey guys, its not often a vise pops up in my area. Is this a fair price to pay for a simplex vise? I am just going to clean it up and paint it.

Fwd: ***Desmond Stephan 60# Swivel Vise*** - $110

*drool* A simplex combination.... You don't see those too often. I would try to talk him down, but even if he doesn't budge I would pay that price as long as nothing is broken / cracked. You lucky SOB...

I am going to pick it up today. I asked if he would take $100 and I was told yes. Looking forward to cleaning this guy up. Any suggestions on color?

Nice catch on that one I love it and would have paid more, in fact I will give you the $110 and you won't have to paint it:D

Great another Fan guy. Here's some of my fans.

Some very nice stuff there! :). I'm on the hunt for a little bit larger fan for my office desk.

:rocker:

What's wrong with it?
Looks like its in great shape.

Nothing really, I just need to clean it up. Had thought about repainting it, just to make it look show-room new.

I picked up my Simplex C43 vise and it is huge. This is going to be one hell of a project. I might actually make an electrolysis bath for this thing because trying to wire wheel it will kill me. Here are some pictures with my newly restored "tiny" Craftsman. Aside from the screws for the jaws and the handle being rusty and stuck, this think is in perfect condition for its age. Removing the dynamic jaw was no issue. I have some PB Blast on it now to try and help loosen those screws up a bit and take it all apart.

Very nice vises, but what I want to know is how long it takes to train the wife to fetch vises for you? I'd pay good money for a training manual. I have to hide mine in different places, different piles, different buildings. As one guy said many pages back, "Never let your wife see all your vises in one pile, you'll never hear the end of it." And here you've taught yours to fetch. What's wrong with this picture?

Oh that's nice!!! I'm jealous. Be patient with those screws because if they were like my Desmond they are 60 degree heads which you can NOT find, all modern screws are 82 degrees and require turning down the outside radius and then grinding away the angle... Not fun...

Can't wait to see it restored. :)

In Texas, a shop fan is just as important as any tool.

OK Vise Friends, Heres the latest: Last week I bought a s#*t load of tools at an estate auction that filled my cargo van (I posted this previously). Of that haul, I purchased a Columbian 504-M2. It turns out that the former owner of the vise was an uncle of a guy I work with. Since this vise was something from his family, he consigned me to restore it. I've never been hired to restore a vise, so a lot of thought had to go into creating a style that would fit him. Knowing that he liked 50s & 60s stuff, I decided to give it a pop art look with the black panels on the red background and the lettering. Along with this, the character
(dings, file marks, etc.) has been preserved. I hope he's happy with it.

Pictures of before & after are below:

Nice work, Mark. That was a pretty quick turn around time too. If he doesn't like it, you can send it my way.

Here is the progress so far on my Simplex C43. The jaws and handle screws are still rusted closed but I put more PB blast on it and gave some taps to help get it to penetrate. I will see how that goes tomorrow for removal. I may look at getting an impact driver and see if that could help jar them loose. I might also try soaking in vinegar as I have read that helps a lot with rust removal. Electrolysis would be nice but I just don't want to go that in-depth if I can get away with out having to create one. I am amazed at how simple the vise was to take apart. No issues with removing the retaining bolt for the pipe jaws and the base bolt was basically just hand tight. This is going to be an easy restore once I get the last three screws out and start cleaning vise. I have some pictures of the easy hardware to take off being wire wheeled. I have some pictures that show the old condition vs the cleaned condition. If any of you have thoughts about a color combination, please let me know. I will look through the thread for ideas as well...but your input is invaluable.

I should mention all three vises I have completed and the start of this one have been done with a small 6" Porter Cable bench grinder. Not the easiest method but it is fun to do it this way. This big guy though I don't think will work in this way because it will just be too large and too heavy for me to try and work around such a small wheel.

Thank you. My wife helped me with the prep work (the hardest task). This morning I did some minor touch ups. I'm glad to know how to estimate a turn around time for future projects.

It would be nice to have a crew of talented but quirky craftsmen working for me on these restorations like on "American Restoration" or "Counting Cars". That way I can do my favorite thing and travel North America and find tools like the "American Pickers".

Looks like Autopts posted a picture of his broom closet

That's funny Mr Big!!! I've talked to that CL seller. He's got his mind set that he's sitting on a Gold Mine. He's had those vises for over 4 years

Here's one for the Journal. Its a older Columbian 204 M3 with the "T" style jaws that was well kept. Not painted.

Awesome fan collection! Your GE fan (the first one you restored) is identical to one that I bought 28 years ago for a quarter at a yard sale, repaired it and use it daily. There is a GJ Fan Forum that I'll have to revisit and add my latest fan project.

Someone start a "show your fan" thread :willy_nil
