I got a call this afternoon from my local Sears tool guy (yes, I spend WAY too much money there) who was keeping an eye on the 260 piece Mechanics Tool Set that Sears used to sell for $299. I wanted the old 260 piece set and not the new 255 piece set because the old set is made in the USA while the new one is made in China.

Anyway, he told me they had just marked them down to $149 so I immediately drove over and bought one. After getting home and thinking more about it, I drove back to the store just before they closed tonight and bought the last two sets. I am keeping one and giving one as a gift. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the third one, but I just couldn't pass up the last of the 'Made in USA' sets.

Here's my emailed receipt as proof:

Thank you for shopping at our Eden prairie store, and for letting me assist you with your purchase.

As far as I know, there is no way to check the inventory or status with Sears online system because this is a 'clearanced' item, but there are clearly some of them remaining in stores. Check your local store(s) if you want one of the last sets.

Hopefully this information has been helpful and may also allow you to 'persuade' your local store to match this pricing? Good Luck, and please post your store location here if you get one and let us know if there are any left!

Is this one of those that come with a box? Any pics? I have way too many craftsman tool sets, but the desperation has been in for a while trying to collect all the remaining USA made items I do not currently have...

Do you think that is better than the 309 piece set for $199?

It depends, do you need a box to store them in? Would you prefer ratcheting wrenches over regular combos? Without directly comparing them, i'm guessing all of the other tools are pretty similar between the two.

Also, not all 255 sets are imported, only new ones. You might be able to find one that is old stock yet, but i'm sure they're going fast since it is often on sale.

The Sears in Pontiac MI (across from the Harbor Freight) had dozens of these sets. All U.S.A.

Do you think this is still a USA set?

Since they are clearancing them, and since the box is clearly printed with "Made in USA", I would be fairly confident in saying that they are all USA made.

Here is a stock photo of the set I am talking about:

Finally, if you find them in the outlet store just make sure the condition is listed as 'New' - which mine were. If they are listed as anything EXCEPT new - like 'Reconditioned' - be sure you check it out before you buy as they might be missing parts, etc.

I got a kick out of the box description. "Dent resistant" verses plastic...LOL!.

There's one in Littleton, CO for $40 and Scranton, PA for $45, and they're in store pickup only. I called and asked, they won't ship them.

Those sets are missing pieces - I'll bet you would not be happy with what you got...

I would expect it to be missing something. I was looking to buy one just for spare USA tools for my other toolsets while I can still find some. If at least half the pieces are there, it's worth $40, and I was willing to gamble $40 that it would maybe even contain more than half the tools.

Are you thinking of the 260 piece or the 255 piece? Because I've seen only the newer black and red 255 piece sets there.

P.S. Scary place, that sears in that dead mall in Waterford, eh? It is always empty, zero shoppers, yet they have posters plastered all over the place about how they're hiring new staff, eh?

The malls are dying here too. The Sears in Midwest City, Okla. is also in an old empty (closed) mall.

Lol. Is it the only store in an otherwise a giant closed shopping mall? I wonder what goes on through the management of Sears - "yeah, okay, the mall closes, but we'll just keep our store open"

Usually this happens because Sears owns the building and adjoining facilities
