Those are pretty damn nice. I see an 8 piece set of these on eBay for $1300 right now... it's not selling... but it's listed

Very nice. I have absolutely no use for those Gigantic size wrenches. But that full set would really look nice in the tool chest.... I'm going to have to resist the urge and pass on them...

If I had a use for them I would pick them up for that kind of a price. I will mention it to our wet utility contractor though, I am sure that they would have a use for them.

Mention of this deal in a thread about buying tools you dont' need caused me to come back and dig it up. The 6 wrenches are still at $20 ea on Northern's site and this time I couldn't resist. I used a code for $20 off $100 from this thread:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=134808&page=3

(thank you EOC Jason!) which took care of the $18 UPS they wanted to charge me. After a few bucks in sales tax (which I don't understand as Northern has no retail presence in Colo AFAIK) I get all six wrenches delivered for $121.41.

I don't NEED them, but that's not the point.

Lmao, figures there was already a thread about these. I was gonna wait till they came and I could see if they were worth a damn before I piped up too much. I thought they'd be in yesterday, but no such luck, maybe Monday.

I don't need them either. I thought long and hard about returning them, then realized they would make great garage artwork.

Keeping them!

heavy trucks.. 1/2 ton and up.

I have never seen a bolt/nut that big on a 1/2, 3/4, or 1-ton truck. Not from the '70's, '80's, or late models (anything I've owned).

I'm not counting pinion nuts and hub nuts, etc...since you can't use a wrench on them anyways...

Generally, the largest nut on the vehicle (that the average mechanic will see) is the lug nuts. 15/16 on one of my trucks...1-1/8 on another

Pitman and Idler arms are pretty larger. I know Ive used up to 1-7/6". Not often enough for wrenches on chrome sockets I just have Impact up to 1-1/2"

You're right. Pinion nuts and hub nuts are there but you need a socket to reach 'em. Ford used 1 1/8" quite a bit..........rear of radius arms on 1/2t TTB, funky exhaust manifold crossover tubes in '96, and I think the t-case lever pivot is 1 1/8" also.

Most practical use I can think of for the average Joe here is trailer balls, and that'd only be to snug them in an emergency or loosen them after broken with something else. What do 1" and 1 1/4" shanks take? I can't remember....

Last Curt 1 1/4" I snugged down called for something like 450ft lbs. I just laughed, put a cheater on it until my whole (heavy, steel) work bench began to move, and called it good. I'd bet 99.9% of tow balls on the road are under-torqued, mine included.

WAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOO!, well they took longer to get here then I figured they would. Man these are pretty cool. I'm not thrilled with the fact they are not reversible, some of you will know what I mean, nuttin worse then getting one of those type caught up in a tight spot and having to pry it off. It'll be a couple of weeks before I get to use the one size I needed, so other then face value I got no input. But the finish quality is excellent and ratcheting is very smooth.

I know, I still haven't received mine. I figured they were looking for the cheapest, slowest possible way to ship them since they were clearance and I basically got the shipping for free.

And yes, *I* know what you mean about the lack of reversible. I say that everytime a thread about ratcheting wrenches comes up but feel like I get mostly blank stares. If you've never backed a stubborn fastener into a dead end and then discovered you were stuck it's hard to fully get it. I think the non-reversibles can be built stronger so it makes sense on sizes this large that they'd be afraid to try to incorporate a reversing mechanism.

And it only happens on the stuck ones too..fn Murphy's law, but I'm glad someone gets it, like you said most don't.

I have mixed emotions about that. Yes I agree I'm sure it's designed that way for maximum strength. My experience with this wafer style of construction hasn't been a good one on the reversing mechanism, they normally wear out pretty damn quick. But for me, I only want the ability to short cut the turning ordeal and not for breaking a tuff one loose or tightening to value.

But whatever, I'm happy with the purchase and for the one and only reason I got the 1-9/16 it's worth every red cent I paid for all 6. :rocker:

Thanks TapperMan for the original post and thanks Ign for the update. I just ordered these and used coupon code 166292 for $20 off $100. I had to add a few filler items but that was not a problem. Great deal and look to be made in USA according to the pictures.

In for 4! 1-9/16 thru 1-7/8

$52...can't go wrong with that. I wish there was a 1-1/2" wrench though...

If I had even a hint of a need for these, I'd order in heartbeat! It's a big shame to pass, but they will just take up a whole lot of real estate in my toolbox for nothing.
