Got these at the local flea market on Sunday. Paid a total of $11 from three vendors. The swivel sockets are two Plomb's (3/4" and 5/8") and the others are Williams and Wright. The handheld 2 ways were $2 and work. The SK 16MM was a plus since I need it for my collection. The rusty combination wrench is also a Plomb. They have been showing up more and more around here lately. I got the MAC RSD100 ratcheting screwdriver for $4 which made my day !! Anyone know the vintage? I'm thinking 70's:dunno:??

It's got four bulbs (two ballasts) in it. They're marked T6. One's dead and the other three are 'blue' looking at the ends. Google doesn't make it sound like T6 bulbs are easy to find?

Search "T6" at Home Depot or Lowes.
Is it fluorescent, or incandescent ?
What kind of base is it ?

Long fluorescent tubes, probably ~40". Home Depot and Lowes websites show circular ones and incandescent type ones which aren't right. Online I can find 'showcase' bulbs that seem like they're the right length, but they're about $20 each.

T6 is like an aquarium light or something. I'm sure lowes or possibly a pet store would have them.

ShadowRuleZ -

Aahhh,
You're right, those will be hard to find. Check with your local Ace/True Value. They may be able to order some in, if their warehouse still carries them (I don't have access to the TV online warehouse anymore, so I can't look them up for you). Or, they may have a 3rd party supplier they can call. Otherwise, try to find a good Electrical Supply house (more expensive).

Well here's my finds for the week.

No tools at the first sale but picked up 5 plastic organizers, 4 USA Plano and 1 China Shimano $5 total
Second one zip.
Third 2 each 75th anniversary (1979) Shreveport Coca Cola Bottling Co bottles (gave one to friend and kept one) $1.50
Fourth Estate sale just as it opened up.
Channelock pliers, Craftsman: pry bar, Crown label wood chisel, #0 phillips, chalk line. Sears: 6" Japan adjustable, USA Stubby common screwdriver Klein side cutters, JH Williams adjustable, Xcelite pliers. With the ear plugs and brush total was $9

Family run estate sale clip on light (free table: drafting T-square, mini funnels, protracter) Craftsman side cutters, 5 Craftsman wrenchs (4 were =V=) spade, rake, weeding tool, Coleman cooler (not pictured) About $12 total.

Nothing else rest of day.

Saturday I stopped by one of the local flea markets.
Skil drill bit stand free, Super Volkano flashlight and Mac 4 oz ball peen $10.

Got a few deals from a vendor I know, Craftsman: 1/2 breaker bar, 3 sockets, outside caliper. Starrett thread gage that took almost an hour to unstick and clean up $10 total.

Avon 1969 Mustang cologne bottle ($3) and and green handle Wiss offset snips $3.

Sunday I went to brunch at a local place and checked out a few sales.
24 x 36 double sided hanging lighted sign for the plastic insert signs brand new and a nice padded case that used to be a Cooper Lighting salesmans sample case $30 total.

Also on Sunday a guy had tools in the barter section on Craigslist $50 for the lot. Pictures looked interesting so after checking them out I bought the lot for $40

Vintage working Fasco all aluminum drill in the original steel case along with extra stuff. Needs a new cord.
Propane bottles at least partially full, vintage Sargent clamp, I am not sure what the curved black handle thing is, ******* bar? body tool underneath it with hand hold?
Fedco saw attachment for drill, Standard wrench, 2 Matra VW slim wrenchs, no name hand vise, no name small bench vise (sticker remanants was diamand shaped) Allen keys and Star drills (Star and Kreuter brands)

Hickory chips (giving to neighbor) two big hammers (one is a Channellock) gas can, two China ratchet tie downs, two USA lever tie downs.

Vintage Army tool box full of hardware. It was for a tool kit for an Anti Aircraft Searchlight power unit.

Craftsman China 1/5 HP working bench grinder.

A rake, a scraper, fluorescent lights on a stand and several 10' pieces of wood trim.

I like that winged "Safety Shope" hammer. Looks like a geologists rock hammer - is that what it is?

My parents had a hammer like this- same brand and shape back in the late 70's and they were into rock hounding, so it's indeed possible it is meant for that. The chisel end has a stepped tip and pretty sharp.

Can you post a picture of the inside fixture? Do they have a wattage rating on them?

Cool sign no matter what.

Sometimes the late dog does get a bone. $50 for everything in the pic from this past saturday afternoon. Yes I gave full asking price.

1988 snap on KR637 top, KR657 bottom all ball bearing, Plomb 1421 & 1425 hammers, Plumb 12lb sledge hammer. The PO, an older gentleman, also handed me an old metal drill in pieces, contained in a zip loc bag. I always enjoyed puzzles. :willy_nil

Found an interesting wrench today in a thrift store junk bin for 50 cents. It's seen its better days, but the logo is still readable. Unless I'm mistaken its a JH Williams (Brooklyn - it has the oval ID stamp that reads: J.H.W. &Co. and U.S.A. with a diamond H logo between the two) special purpose wrench made between 1914 and 1924. It has an industry standard number (761) with a "Y" under it, a diamond H logo on the shank, and "special" stamped on it. Probably a factory wrench for a special purpose machine, but I'm just guessing now. Anyone know more that that?

More details about your 761 wrench can be found here:

The little Snappy keyring with a miniature version of the box is my favorite part!

Was $50 marked way down from the original price? Or did this box somehow manage to sit out all day at under 1/10th of its value, and nobody else noticed it?

Sounds like you need F42T6 bulbs. Commonly used in display cases and and one-off type fixtures. Google will find plenty of them and yes they are pricey.

You could probably retro-fit to more common fluorescent bulbs or even LED for the cost of the four bulbs.

Cool light!

I thought of telling the OP the same but it does change the value of that vintage GM proving grounds light. If the bulbs were not available at all I would agree.

My embarrassing (compared to other scores) flea market find- a $5 lamp.

I was ready to pay $20 for a new one but was not convinced enough. $5 seemed better. I already used it for some electronics work I did on the weekend!

Is 42" a common size of other florescents? I'm guessing it isn't. The transformers/ballasts (?) says it's only rated for these bulbs, and have been tested but not certified with T12s. I'll try to get a picture of the inside and post it for everyone.

I really hoped it was brighter since I want to put it over a work bench, but it's only 100 watts total. I was thinking about maybe retrofitting some form of an LED system into it. They're pretty small and modular and easily removable later.

Nice sign ShadowZ. Any idea where it came from?

I was told, and I think it is, from the GM Milford Proving Grounds. Haven't found anyone who remembers seeing a sign like this out there, but the seller did say he had an identical trashed sign that said 'GENERAL MOTORS'.

Thanks Jeff, I believe that is my first "You ****" award. Always wondered what that felt like.

Thanks Dave  I know, luck was really on my side on this one I suppose. I have a prior commitment Saturday mornings ~7am-2pm so my garagesaling is pretty limited. Usually when I get there the quality tools are all gone, or are WAY over priced, as in ebay is cheaper. :(

Nothing in comparison to your usual scores Dave, but I am very happy to say the least.

I know :bounce:, usually I ain't one for trinkets or the like, but I too think it is really cool. When I pulled out the bottom drawer and found it I was extremely excited to say the least. I didn't realize snap on made tiny key chains for their boxes. A google and ebay search didn't show much in the way of info. What is the story on the matching key chain? When/why did they make them, do they still make them? :dunno:

It was one of those sales where nothing was marked. Older couple, real nice folks. Actually it was a real PITA to find. Saw a sign with no arrows, ended up being on a culdisac at the back of a neighborhood. I just started browsing, they asked me if I was looking for anything in particular as usual I said "just browsing, but mostly hand tools and the like, car accessories". I was told that all the hand tools were sold earlier that morning (typical). In a bucket of gardening tools I pulled out the hammers and sledge, asked how much they were, lady replied "How about a buck each", fine with me. I go up to pay and she says "would you be interested in a tool box?" told her I wouldn't mind looking at it, just out of curiosity. Asked her a few basic questions, brand, model, etc. Said to me "O honey I don't know it's red, let me get my husband" so he walks over, we walk into the garage, and I thought to myself, "This is going to be way out of my price range", I told him it looks like a nice box and asked what he was asking for it. He said and I quote "How about $50?", I'm like "I'm sorry, did you say $50.00 dollars?", he said yep, would you be interested? :lol_hitti

Had to run home and steal the neighbors van. I tried to give them $55 multiple times, but they only wanted $50 for the box and hammers.:dunno:
They acted like I was doing them a favor by purchasing the box.

It is in pretty decent condition. The bottom box works good, unfortunately the top box has 3 broken drawers. One of them being a ball bearing one. :(
BUT the box itself is straight, no rust, all drawers had cork drawer liners. The guy had a wood / auto body shop in his garage so it is extremely dusty. O well, for $50 I was pleased. Never thought I would own a BB snap on box.

Zach,
You ****,no really YOU ****. You had to wait until I put the 9mm wrench in the mail or I would have tried to trade for that Snap On Box.....
I have a feeling I'd need a few more wrenches to make the deal work.
Nice job,nice box.

Picked up a cherry mitutoyo micrometer 0-1 model number 101-113 off Craigslist for 30 bucks. The mic is dead on zero and has no drop/abuse marks in fact looks like it was well taken care and barely used. The mic included all the paper work and even the one year warranty paper not even filled out in fact

WOW great score! Pics of the drill! you got me curious!

Ask and you shall receive. I wasn't kidding on the in pieces part. Here is where it stands now. Still needs to be cleaned obviously, but I believe I have all the parts in their correct position, including rotor shims. Thankfully it turned out that all (I think) of the critical parts are present. Only thing missing was a cord, which I dug out of my spare cords bin, chuck key (no big issue), and the trigger switch, which looks like it is going to be hard to find. :( I had one in my box o' switches, but it is not of the proper configuration for the lock mechanism. Any suggestions as to where to find a trigger/switch for it? Google didn't turn up much for the model #. :headscrat

Is anyone familiar with this drill? Is it a variable speed drill? The speed only says 1000RPM, usually I see 0-1000RPM or 0-xxxxRPM if the drill is variable speed.

Um the trigger switch is missing? I see both a trigger and a switch... :dunno:

Oh wait, that is the one from you parts bin? What doesn't fit?

You can try calling Porter Cable (Or Googling for someone that carries PC parts) but I'd ohm out all the windings before spending any hard earned $$...

I'm certain that is a fixed speed drill; dang few of the all aluminum hand drills were variable. that came later for the most part.

ZKling $50? geez did you get taken...
Thanks man  I know I am thinking about returning it. :lol_hitti I do feel slighted.

ZKLING! NICE BROTHER! Good come up

Thanks Dave  Looks like not all the cheap boxes are over in your neck of the country.

and of course, he *****!!! Good score ZKLING!!

Thanks Nine, Yea, it's a rare occurrence, I'm probably done for the year. All luck has been used. :lol_hitti

Hey Andy, yep, that was my plan all along :bounce:, Nah, kidding of course. I had to find the muscle to get that top box on the bottom by myself before I could post a proper pic, or it would have been up sooner, I promise. BTW, that top box is one HEAVY sob for someone that is <6' and <180lbs.

I think shipping may be a bit of a killer on the box. Don't worry I won't forget about you and all you have done for me. ;)

Good on you for trying, and yes, you DO ****! :pimpflash

Yea, technically I owed them $53 ($3 hammers, $50 box), planned on handing them $55 but they wouldn't have anything of it. Seriously the older gentleman thanked me numerous times for getting the box out of his garage. :lol_hitti :dunno:

you DO ****! :pimpflash

Wow a "you ****" from the master himself . I am not worthy

ZKLING: I showed this to the techs in the shop today and you have four more people in the world that hate you. (OK they're jealous like me) SWEET!

Thanks msgtsmithret  But really I think the pics make it look better than it is. Yea the bottom is pretty nice, all drawers work, casters roll good and it is pretty clean. One or two of the drawers are bent across the face a little but nothing a good tug won't fix. However... the top box has 3 broken drawers, one being ball bearing that looks like it was hit by a truck :( One of the small drawers is twisted ~30° front to back :wtf: both lid supports are broken, the inner locking security box thing is detached. Only positive I can say is that it is not rusty. I hate cleaning rust off a box and painting. Lets just say those body hammers and possibly the sledge are going to get a workout getting the drawers back into shape.

The plan is to replace my current 26" wide setup with this as my main box. My old 26" top box is going to a friend and my old bottom is either going to become a work station or get sold. Space is tight, but I hate to get rid of my old box.

Thanks again everyone for the positive comments. Now back to the regular show, me drooling over you amazing finds.

Yea, the cord and switch are pieces I dug out of my spare parts/rummage box. I like to take things apart and save good working items. Switches and cords can be really expensive to buy new. I have not had it together completely yet, just a mock up. I was excited when I found the trigger switch in my box o switches, then realized it didn't fit. :(

Here is a pic, only pic I have found of a complete unit.

http://www.instappraisal.com/antique-appraisal/porter-cable-power-drill

The problem with the switch I have is the location of the lock on button, so the cases won't fit together.

I'd ohm out all the windings before spending any hard earned $$...

I haven't had a chance to call them yet. I did ohm out the windings. Nothing appears to be wrong with the drill, no smell of burnt, armature and brushes look good. Gears had plenty of grease on them, so lets hope for the best. The older gentleman just handed it to me and said good luck. :lol_hitti :dunno:

I'm certain that is a fixed speed drill; dang few of the all aluminum hand drills were variable. that came later for the most part.

Dang, well that kinda *****. In that case, maybe I can just put in a cheap, on hand, momentary push button switch. I have a certain friend that tends to borrow my cordless drill and run the battery down before returning. Plan was to gift him this one.

One thing you CAN do before spending any $$ on a switch: get the mechanicals together and hook up the cord so it bypasses the switch. Clamp that puppy in your handy dandy vise, (You DO have a vise don't you? ) and plug it in. Brut force plug "switch", but at least you know if it was the switch that the issue,

Today was an estate sale for a mechanic. Full snap on 3-bay cabinet with top in the listing, full of tools they were selling. They did their research and looked up selling price of each tool from former ebay auctions, then discounted 40% off and that is what they listed it at. No negotiation unless you bought a whole lot. Here are the gems I found

$30 toolbox

They were also selling the bottom box for $40, but I missed that.

$25 vise. Big one, and useful.

$5 each on the old plates

$13 for everything else. Two Snap on punches. Set of craftsman punches,

Klein pliers marked A KNC (1967 if I am reading the code right)

this will be fun to play with:

That's a great find, the magneto. They are fun to play with. We had a cat that kept tearing a hole in our screen door and getting in between the outer and inner door. To curb this we took a strip of cardboard, wound it with some magnet wire, and then hooked it to the magneto. It took a couple of "clicks" on the crank for this project. The cat found its way back out the hole in a hurry:)

They don't put out enough current to kill you, but they will rattle your cage if you try touching the leads. A couple of things you can do with them is drive worms out of the ground if you drive a couple of rods into the soil after it rains. Another is to dangle a couple of leads over the side of your boat and use it to "stun" fish. I read about this online years ago but I have never tried it. I ran the idea by a Fish & Wildlife officer that I know. It turns out that, yes it works, and it turns out they use magnetos to collect specimens. They don't do serious harm to the fish, they just drift to the surface. So you know it is illegal even though I doubt its a practice that the law looks for anymore.

One last things is that you can light up one of those energy saver spaghetti light bulbs that I can't stand. Endless fun!

I went to a couple of pawn shops today. Most of the stuff was either junk or way to high like $30 for a set of use Harbor Freight wrenches that sell new at the store for $19.99. One shop had a set of tappet wrenches in a glass case with no tag. When the man got them out for me it was a set of 5 (3/8-7/8) like new Craftsman U.S.A-V tappet wrenches. I bought them for $10. I don't really need them, but for $10 I couldn't pass it up.
