Question posed in title: Did craftsman ever offer semi-deep sockets? I've run into a few situations lately where I would have really loved a set of semi-deeps, so I've been looking into them.

They must have offered them at some point in time recently. I have some loose ones laying around I got on clearance about 7 years ago.

Yes they did, briefly. They're more of a collectors item now due to the scarcity so you probably wont find a deal on them. Better off getting new Gearwrench or SK.

I was looking at the SK but it seems they only have 1/4" metric listed in their current catalog. Anyone know if they are still producing 3/8"?

I'd support SK making U.S. made tools versus Craftsman.

I would too, if SK made 6pt 3/8 sockets. I have some Snap On 12 point, but I'm starting to try and get full sets of 6point as well, and I can't really justify the extra cost of a second set of Snappy.

SK has a buy one get one special on the 1/4 drive semi deep socket sets. See the hot deals thread for more info. SK makes 1/4 SAE and Metric chrome semi deep sets.

However, SK never made chrome 3/8 drive semi deep sockets. They make 3/8 impact semi deep sockets though. I think it's because their regular deep (not extra deep) 3/8 drive chrome measure 1.76 inches long in sizes 1/4 to 1/2 or 6 to 13 mm so, they're close to their impact semi deep length of 1.67 inches in length already.

I never understood why Craftsman stopped making the 3/8 drive semi deep sets. I thought they were a bargain at $19.99 a set. I usually reach for semi deeps first. Oh, sorry Craftsman didn't make a 11mm. The metric set ran 10, 12-19mm, stock number 43219 from the 1998-1999 Craftsman tool catalog.

last time I checked, which granted was awhile ago, you could get a Snap-On set for about $75-$80 on ebay in like new condition with a little patience.

MAC and Matco socket sets sets generally go for cheap as well.

yes, I have all of them that I got as part of a set about 10 yrs ago. I knew they stopped making them, but I didn't know they're highly desired. I don't use them much.

Thanks! I have to admit that I really don't search eBay and Craigslist as religiously as I probably should. Probably need to change that.

Au contraire, SK did make chrome 3/8 drive semi-deeps. I have two filling holes in my Craftsman semi deep sets, a 40416 1/2" six point and a 8413 13mm six point.

 I was mistaken see my other posts!

I have 3-4 random sizes in SAE and Metric as well that I found at yard sales and pawn shops. I keep an eye out for them, but they're tough to come by out in the wild.

OK, checking out the SK sockets instead of getting ready for my garage sale LOL.

My vintage SK 40416 1/2" semi deep 3/8d socket is 1.74" long roughly. Current SK catalog has the normal deep sockets same part number at 1.76" long which applies up to and includng the 9/16. After that the 5/8 and up are 2.51" long. SK does offer extra deep sockets up to the 9/16 they are 2.14" long. My Craftsman semi deep 9/16 43223 GK code is 1.625 long. My Craftsman normal deep 1/2" six point 43332 G1 code is 2.5" long.

So with all that being said the SK's are viable for those who only need the semi deeps up to 9/16. They will also work for replacing missing Craftsman semi deeps, they even fit my original Craftsman plastic holder.

A little Ebay sleuthing revealed that Craftsman semi deeps go back to the Circle H days, sets show up and sell for about $15-30 and later on they must have added the 11mm since there was one on there.

They did make the 9mm & 11mm but they were sold in the master/large sets.

You failed to read my post. SK's regular deep sockets aren't that deep in sizes up to 13mm or 1/2, they are only 1.75 inches long overall, making them more semi deep or mid length when compared to other brands. However, SK markets them as deep sockets. Bounce your part numbers off of the SK catalog and you'll see what I mean. SK deep sockets actually come in five different lengths based on size from 1.75 up to 13mm, 1.86 14 & 15mm, 2.50 16-20mm, 2.75 for 21 & 22mm, and 2.82 for 23, 24 & 26mm.
Whereas, SK specifically markets 3/8 drive Semi deep impacts sockets that are all 1.67 inches in length for sizes 8-19mm.

I read it but didn't understand it at first. All I knew was I had SK's in place of my missing Craftsman semi-deeps, 13mm and 1/2" It wasn't until after my first post that I looked up the part numbers and realized exactly what you said was right. I should have made it clear in my second post that you were right and SK did not have a set of semi-deeps.

Now to stir up the pot again I was checking my Husky USA bucket today and noticed some semi deep (compared to Craftsman normal deep) 3/8 drive sockets. Didn't have time to investigate further will try tomorrow.

OK since I am like a dog with a bone I had to go check out the Husky USA 3/8 drive sockets. Here's the report.

12mm 6 pt 22612 1.8" tall
13mm 6 pt 22613 1.8" tall
1/2" 6 pt 22116 1.8" tall
9/16" 6 pt 22118 2" tall

1/2" 6 pt CBD-616 2.1" tall
5/8" 6 pt CBD-620 2.3" tall
11/16" 12 pt CBD-22 2.2" tall

I thin the CBD's are earlier but not sure. They still don't help much with the semi-deep situation.
