Sometimes the late dog does get a bone. $50 for everything in the pic from this past saturday afternoon. Yes I gave full asking price.

1988 snap on KR637 top, KR657 bottom all ball bearing, Plomb 1421 & 1425 hammers, Plumb 12lb sledge hammer. The PO, an older gentleman, also handed me an old metal drill in pieces, contained in a zip loc bag. I always enjoyed puzzles. :willy_nil

i'm calling the cops,

that box alone was a steal

Thanks Crew, I am still in disbelief. Now I need to get working on it. Long way to go before I can start moving in so to speak. I'm sure I will have a bunch of questions.

i know what ya mean,
every time i bring something "new" home, i have to reorganize seemingly everything.

i thought i had stuff pretty well organized at one time, then did some trading and ended up with a KR537/kra300e.
moved nearly every tool and box i have at home around in the garage to see what would fit, where i had space...
then i picked up a dumpster find bench..
and reorganized again :eyecrazy:
then the old wooden storage cabinet i was using literally fell apart, almost coming off the wall.
about the same time i salvaged a large lockable cabinet, moved 1/2 the damn garage around trying to get stuff to fit again :willy_nil:willy_nil
and with the recent "find" of some unused metal storage bins,
yep, you guessed it, moved stuff around again, built a wooden storage rack for 8 or 9 more metal drawer bins.

maybe one of these days i'll stop organizing, and actually get around to working on somthing :dunno:

Not a garage sale find, but at the local pawn shop I found a 9/16 Plumb wrench for what amounts to 50 cents since it and the other no name made in USA 9/16 and 1/2 offset wrench was 1 dollar.

Hey its not how big it is, it's what you can do with it!
You KNEW that was coming didn't you? :lol_hitti
(I'm just surprised no one else beat me to the comment! :pimpflash )

I worded it that way for a reason. ;) Left the window of opportunity open, just surprised no one beat you to it.

I use to have a big vise and large real anvil (still have a homemade robins style). Sold them along with my large welding forge when I got out of bladesmithing/thought I was going to move after college. A younger (than me) kid and his dad wanted to get into bladesmithing and I gave them a really good deal on the package. Basically giving the stuff away. Believe me I am still kicking myself for that. I thought it wouldn't be too hard to find a reasonable anvil and large vise again if I ever needed. Boy was I wrong on that. O well, can't change the past.

Rainy day.... day off.... hopes of going to the junkyard to get what I need for my Magnum were a bust (dealer wants $230 for a clock spring, ffff that!)... so while running errands, decided to pop in to my local "indoor flea market". Dug around for awhile, taking pics of the Crown Top stuff I want to buy but didn't (yet), found some goodies:

Yes, that is a incredibly rusty =V= 1/2" box head... that somehow still works! lol

Hatchet is a Plumb!

Some Williams, some Billings, some Bonney, and those X ones (forget who they are, someone in the NE, Bridgeport maybe?)

Utica needle nose cutters, 3 Thorsen and 2 SK sockets, CMan pin punch, etc...

As I was ringing out, I inquired about the old old CMan Compressor in the back corner... they told me $125 last week, asked them if they would take $50 for it... talked to the owner for a minute... Boom! Mine!

In great shape, spins freely, still has compression to it! Hose is in great shape too! Looks like it just needs to be cleaned, oiled, and an air filter on it. Even the belt is still good! BTW it's a 283.18060!

Can't wait to fix this up, but heading out now to grab my soon to be mine 4' Tall GE Radio... pics to come of that if requested ;)

Nothing today for me today in terms of tools. Picked up a pair of smaller Lyon lockers for the kids room for $20.

Compressor is a 1930's era paint compressor. Low pressure IIR.

maybe later I''l search the old catalogs

please do ;) Figured I can blow stuff off with it, and the misses can air brush as well. Plus it looks bad ***. Win, win win!

The Radio... coworker was running an estate sale with her brother in law, cleaning out her mother in law's house... I had to work and couldn't go, and she knows I'm into cool old stuff. So she texted me pics of this thing, they were asking $50 all day... no takers, so I said I'd take it for $20. Then spent the last 2 months trying to meet up with her brother in law to actually pick it up. Finally was able to see it in person and bring it home.

It is a 1939 General Electric H-87! Definitely going to be a project and a half, but should be well worth it in the end. Full restoration will be my first attempt, but if I can't find parts, going to at least get the controls looking good, put a modern receiver in it, and make the thing function. Think it would surprise people if I walked over to this thing, hit a button, and it streams music from my iphone

Rick If you can't get parts, let me know.. DON"T gut it for "modern" electronics you will destroy 90% of it's value. the amp, short of having dead transformers, is VERY rebuild-able and DON'T just plug it in to test as, it will likely do serious damage due to old parts that are no longer up to it. The primary culprits are the old Electrolytic caps which can be replaced and tubes are for the most part, readily available.

I did go looking for the Compressor, but struck out. Sorry. But the time frame I gave is bigger, from 33 to about 48. I'd put that on in the thirties on a WAG, probaby late 30's

Cleaning the mouse **** out of the thing is first priority... then fixing the switches and knobs... then overlook the electronics before plugging it in ;)

Judging by the CMan logo on the compressor, I would think early 50's at the absolute latest.

 Did they use that to stir the salt in the ocean or something? Gezal peats, that is just covered. Hopefully it will clean up well for you. Awesome that it still works. I can only imagine how nice it will be once cleaned up.

Hope this doesn't violate the rules, if so just delete. Technically I didn't find this at a garage sale. Went for a little jog this evening and ran across (literally) this sitting on top of a trash can. Yep, I jogged the distance (few suburb blocks) home with it. :bounce:

Reason I posted this is because the box contained a similar item to one that was posted a few pages back. That being a telephone magneto :dunno: This one looks much smaller. Anyone have an idea on the age? It has a metal plate that says "Patented in USA July 17, 1894". It seems to turn freely, but I don't know much about them. Should be a cool little conversation piece:p

Other than that is is just a bunch of misc junk, literally. It always amazed me the stuff people just throw away.
-Craftsman soldering iron
-Craftsman magnet stick? :dunno:
-Big keys
-Tiny butane "The cub" torch
-Full propane cylinder
-Lock out / tag out
-xacto knife

Last pictured item I don't know what it is. There appear to be strips of metal that fit into a collet setup similar to an exacto knife. The pieces of metal are not sharp, and in the bottom of the pen/device, there are ~10 spare strips of metal. Any ideas what this is :dunno:

Again, hope I didn't violate the rules here.

You can't just "look" at the electronics. There is a specific process for testing an old tube amp that, if followed, will prevent damaging something . If you have a cap short out and let the magic smoke out of the transformers and you are generally done.

Today's stuff came from a thrift store I frequent that seldom has any tools:

Wen soldering gun kit, with red bakelite-housed gun, solder, various tips, and case.
NOS Weller tips for soldering guns and irons.
A metal slide storage box. I always left these behind, until someone here (nine4gmc, I think) mentioned that they were useful. I think he's right.
Probably not much tomorrow, but I'm looking forward to the swap meet this weekend.

The "Western Electric" label on the magneto is the tip-off that it came from a hand-crank telephone. That was the Bell System manufacturing branch for telephones and switch systems.

Good find! And you posted in the right place.

Welcome.

I thought of telling the OP the same but it does change the value of that vintage GM proving grounds light. If the bulbs were not available at all I would agree.

I don't know the current value of the light or how a retrofit would effect it. It could always be retrofitted in a way that can be reversed. To me, modifying to suit my needs makes it more valuable, but then again I don't sell or get rid of hardly anything...

Is 42" a common size of other florescents? I'm guessing it isn't. The transformers/ballasts (?) says it's only rated for these bulbs, and have been tested but not certified with T12s. I'll try to get a picture of the inside and post it for everyone.

I really hoped it was brighter since I want to put it over a work bench, but it's only 100 watts total. I was thinking about maybe retrofitting some form of an LED system into it. They're pretty small and modular and easily removable later.

I was told, and I think it is, from the GM Milford Proving Grounds. Haven't found anyone who remembers seeing a sign like this out there, but the seller did say he had an identical trashed sign that said 'GENERAL MOTORS'.

42" tubes are not common which is why they are so pricey. I would look at retrofitting to T5HO. You can get these tubes in a 36" length for a couple bucks each. These are commonly used for aquariums so they are cheap and easy to find.

I'd start with a 4 lamp fixture and mount that "complete" fixture inside of your light if possible. If not possible, I'd gut the new 4 lamp and transfer everything over.

Google "36 t5ho" to get started.

Picked up this 6" Wilton for $80. Model 1760. Can't tell if its import or domestic. Any input?

must have, but shockingly was all surface rust, nothing on the insides. had it in evaporust for 4 hours last night before i took it out, brushed it a little, then took it apart to soak some more... gonna go play with it in an hour or so, i'll take some pics.

Went to one sale this morning and then a second later in the early afternoon. Not a bad haul for 80.00 That includes the Reed i posted in the Vises thread, the Stanley Sweetheart vise and an American Scale that a friend picked up for me earlier this morning.

The first stop was crowded but i was 2nd in line and had the garage all to myself. I found a few pieces of Snap on, all marked Union Pacific RR, and quite a few pieces of Plomb. The 1/4" WF-8 ratchet is the coolest thing i've seen in a while and the plastic handle driver will finish off my 1/4" drive set.

There was some Blue Point, Proto LA, a mostly complete Bonney 1/4" drive set, craftsman metric crowsfoot set, Schick aluminum pipe wrench and a tiny crescent wrench.

I also found 2 spare jaws for Paris adjustable pliers if anybody needs them. I'm almost certain thats what they are for.

Dang BC, great scores as always!!! I picked a Schick pipe wrench a while back myself. I had to look it over several times before deciding to buy it. Couldn't decide if it was real or not. It feels much lighter than aluminum :dunno:

Stopped by an estate sale that doesn't technically open until Saturday, but I saw a machinist chest in the posting and they agreed to sell it to me tonight. I headed over after work and picked it up along with some other goodies.

Shot of everything

What I came for - $40 chest with tools. And most impressive is it has a key! This is a keeper.

$25 for some dividers. Over priced, but I did the reverse bundle here. Instead of paying the $10 for a pile that they were asking I pulled out a few individual pieces and they asked $25 for these. I wanted to do the right thing here since they gave me a deal on the chest of tools.

$3 for a pile of soldering irons and some long drill bits. $1 for arbor

Another $3 for two arbors

$5 for two old canoe paddles and $3 for a hamster cage for the kid. It will make her day. $2 for the two blue NJ plates.

Lots and lots of chemistry stuff. Stands, heaters, glass, corks, etc. They were asking $50 but accepted $40. I almost didn't accept because it is so much stuff, but I am a chemistry major and will enjoy building a nice layout to show the kids some basic chemistry.

$12 for in the box charger

Another $1 for an old machine oiler, but it didn't make the photos (blocked by the tool chest)

Flea markets involve me being forced to sit around all day on my only real day off, so.....no, i don't sell them at flea markets. The vises get sold/traded to others for bigger and better vises but i keep most of them. The Plomb gets saved in my collection as does much as the rest.

I barely put a dent in that garage this morning and there was plenty left for others to buy:thumbup:

I try to use most of the tools i buy but sometimes its just not possible. I keep my most used ratchets in my box so i never really get into my "collection" of them i have stored away.

You might have one made of Magnesium then, Nine4. They were made by Schick during Vietnam under a contract to make parts for Huey rotor blades.

It must be Magnesium then, the 10" wrench weighs 14oz., comparable to a standard 3/8" ratchet.

Nice finds for free! I used to have one of those mini butane torches when I was in High school or maybe even Jr high. it worked OK for soldering structurally smaller pieces, and I have no clue where if finally got off to. probably died or I couldn't get fuel and tossed it... :dunno:

BC, the jaws are for an Eifel Flash Plierwrench (The original Plierwrench) and I'd have been interested but I have pairs with those jaws already. Great finds overall and I like the Stanley vise! I have one of those Sweethearts with (Most of) it's original black and orange paint

Quick question Outlaw, what years was Craftsman using the blue writing on the old label?
