7 yard sales and MILES of wrong turns following signs that had no arrows.

C-man '50ish Toolbox #650x(?) w/metal handle - $5.00 (lid is tweaked and the tray needs a few "loving taps" with a hammer)
Reed Pipe Threader Set - $5.00
Snap-On Prybar #SPB12A - $1.00 (my first snap-on. needed a little file work on the tip, and scotchbright the rust before oiling)

I didn't think you wanted to see the T-shirts or the 50¢ breast feeding pillow. :D

.

Only if the pillow is in use! :D

I struck out yesterday, but found a few items today.

First sale was a bust, but the second had a freshly rebuilt alternator that will make a compact upgrade for my 2N Ford tractor with a 12 Volt conversion. It currently has a Delco 10SI on it that hangs out so far the tie rod hits it! I got the alternator and two slope indicators for $30. I'll use one slope indicator on my road grader blade to make it easier to tell when the blade is level.

The seller threw in a Craftsman -V- flex head 1/2" ratchet because the ratchet and selector were stuck. For free. I took it apart and cleaned hard grease out of it and it now works like new. :D

More to follow.

And they had already de-rusted it? :wtf::confused::headscrat

OK, whats the bad news, it is broken somewhere?

No bad news at all. Nothing welded or broken. Story was he had it for sale last year with the rust for 5 bucks and no takers. Cleaned it up this year and listed it for 4 bucks. After i bought it, i asked how much did he pay for the can of paint to spray it?

He gave me a dirty look and said about 6 bucks.

I ran:3gears:

Heading home I made an impulse stop and found a SK socket set box and a couple of 18" porcelain lamp shades. $20.00.

There was a very pretty Craftsman 1/4" drive socket set box from the 40's with pretty good paint and a good label for $.50, but another guy grabbed it before I could get to it! :(

Well, I am not usually one to go out to yard sales but I noticed this driving by.

I thought about the jack for a bit then offered him $60 for the jack and the grinder.

Other than the paint the jack is in good condition, the grinder is a 12amp model.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you snagged the model Craftsman long-handled flex head ratchet that is bringing sick money on eBay - one closed recently for $350 (check thread history, it was discussed recently).

Dave, you ****! lol
How is it that 2 people find those Klein tapping tools that I am still looking for, yet I can never come across one!!

Here is my haul for the day, 20 bucks-
Orange toolbox and various tools, plus a yardstick from a Chevy dealer

Assorted files, try square, Craftsman diagonals, unmarked tap wrench (even after cleaning rust), tin snips

Side of the box:

They also had these old wrenches in the garage, I passed on them...lol

Cool wiper box, jusridin!

Thanks Outlander, stop looking for them and some will turn up ;)

mattblast, that chemistry set is awesome... but it would have my door kicked in for suspicion of meth lab :lol_hitti

LORDDiESEL, I can't believe you paid more for the Craftsman than you did the Reed, great score!!

jakemac, 60-70s box with the crown logo, check out the Crown thread some time!!

Thanks Jeff!!

That's a nice Wilton, Shadow! I saw one go past the intersection on my way home from garage sales this morning. There was a big wood bench on a flatbed trailer and it had what looked like a 4-6" bullet bolted on. I wanted to chase them down like the Count of Customs and try to buy the vise of them. :D

Nice crown label boosted, it does appear to be a valve spring compressor of some type.

Provincial, check that flex head, you may have something special! Either way, you ****!

Dave nailed it again, you are in a great area man!

Cool jack KSB, you should try garage sales more often, looks like you scored!

4BT, any more pics of that lil box, good find!

Looked real hard for RHFT flex-heads and KR65A boxes, but didn't find any. Still think I did kinda Ok. Second stop first. It was an estate sale with "vintage tools and organization". I was late enough through the door I think I missed some stuff:

Here we have the pan it all came in, Williams and Armstrong C-clamps, two kinds of Kastar feeler gauges, a Sears spark plug gapper, an advertising magnifier by Zippo, a Dunlap DOE, a "Bulldog" ratcheting screwdriver, 2 Craftsman Long-C ignition wrenches, a very short USA screwdriver, Duro Chrome 8" adjustable, Craftsman = brake tool, a Japan distributor wrench (with a very Sears-like part number), "Lil Devil Great Grip" pliers (need to research these), Craftsman Channellocks of what I guess are an early iteration of the design, Diamond small Channellocks, a Starrett Micrometer and box, a small metal fishing tackle box, and a 15" Coes/Billings adjustable wrench. (Is this a pipe wrench? monkey wrench? Auto wrench?)
Backing up, I spent the morning at a swap meet. I recall only meager pickings from there last year. Did slightly better today. First up, wrenches and pliers:

From left, what look like NOS Indestro DOEs in their pouch, Wright and Artisan combos, a 10/12" Crescent double-ended adjustable, 10" SK adjustable, 8" adjustables from Peck/Stowe/Wilcox (paging Mr. Outlaw...), Diamond, Proto, and Bonney, 2 pair of Channellock er, Channellocks, Channellock Linesman's, and Diamond cutters.
Finally, ratchets and drive tools:

1/2" ratchets by Williams, Snap-On, Craftsman (Stainless and RHFT), and unmarked.
7/16" drive ratchet by Blackhawk.
3/8" ratchets by Blackhawk and Indestro
1/4" ratchet by Cornwell
A nearly-complete Billings & Spencer socket set. Female-drive ratchet with male tangs on each socket. Works great, even with only 11 teeth.
1/2" drive breaker bars by "Chromium Vanadium" (I think this means Indestro. Note the male 1/2" drive on the non-flex end.) and Duro-Chrome (this one has a 1/2" drive female end on the handle).
3/8" drive breaker bars by Craftsman Long-C (underline) and Thorsen.
Thanks,

Here's an inside pic of the SK box. Trying to decide how to remove the surface rust without disturbing the remaining finish.

That Parker vise is so stylin' it looks like it's zipping thru the air.

You guys all got some great scores.

I hit an estate sale for a small vise, a rotozip in a case, some wire and an ethernet switch, all for $30. Took a closer look at the vise-- oh my. Well, if anyone wants parts off it, Rock Island 571....

Very slim pickins today for me, 3 estate sales with nothing to show for it, and only one 'target of opportunity' that yielded - - - nothing.

and a 15" Coes/Billings adjustable wrench. (Is this a pipe wrench? monkey wrench? Auto wrench?)

Monkey wrench.

Go look up Coes on wikipedia and it gives the itterations, timeline and persuant makers of similar products.

Early Coes had the wood handles.
Later ones like you have were all metal (which I personally like far more for using vs. the wood handle for collecting.)

Pipe wrenches had the flexible top section as they do today to the best of my knowledge.

Clean that Coes up, make it shiney and put it to use.

Sucker is tight and precise like a good adjustabe wrench should be.

Not exactly a haul, but a visit to a flea market yielded a few finds. First, five Williams Superrenches. The 1/4x15/64 has the Williams triple-line logo on the other side; the ignition wrenches just say "Alloy". The Indestro socket is 3/8 drive 11/16 12-point, and if it's ever been used I can't detect it. The 6" adjustable is a gift for a friend who is a Rocky and Bullwinkle fan. I couldn't resist. Got the lot for $2.
Note the Before Massage Therapy and After Massage Therapy pix of the adjustable. A woodworking vise and a wood block or two works wonders.

So I get a call from a friend of mine. He's at a church garage sale and they have a bunch of hinges, L brackets, and other hardware. He tells me that its going for cheap and I should come by and look at it. I ran another errand and dropped by the sale. It turns out that all the hardware is BRAND NEW AND STILL IN THE MANUFACTURERS PACKAGING.
.... and selling for $.50 per package. I can always use hinges so I loaded up.

50 packages.

I got all this for $20 today from a pawn shop. Two 1/2" ratchets, most of a deep 1/2" and all of a short 1/2" socket set and a bunch of 1/4" and 3/8" sockets.

What is the difference between a single line V code and double line V code stamped tools?

Thanks, John

Wow Lots of GREAT hauls!

My day was sort of quiet. First two stops were a waste of time and gas, and further out of my way that I usually go so it was doubly irritating, as was a church Rummage sale.

The fourth stop was an estate sale and my primary score for the day. The guy that runs the garage section must be perusing Eprey for pricing lately, as he's been asking silly money a lot more than he used to. I had him put back some NOS wire wheels, 3 old PG&E locks with keys, and a set of green lee conduit punches.

This is what I kept for $30:

A bunch of chasers and dies, a box of taps and an AC voltmeter.

attachment.php

2 Drill bit racks fractional and numbered, a die stock for the dies, an old go -no go gauge for 3/8 N.C. thread, some BEAT lead vise jaw caps for 4" jaws (No sign of the vise the went to...), and a leather working awl.

attachment.php

An old Champion DeArment, Channel locks. these are very different. No. 407, and only two grooves. I think they are intended as battery terminal pliers... anyone have an old catalog? If they are bat terms, they are the highest quality set I have! Welder vise grips still in the box, and a set of Sheet metal Tong Vise grips, and a Shure Stake Sta-Kon terminal crimper made by T&B.

attachment.php

2 small vises, one rail type marked L H & F Co. and No. 1, the other a common two pin slide design, but no brand to COO on it; too bad the rail vise had the clamp busted and welded... 2 Proto 1/2" drive ratchets, with the hole alignment handles, (this guy clearly was ex PG&E so...) an old torch, (I've see a lot of these around, this is my first copy; is this fueled by carbide maybe?), and a tiny (1 oz?) Copper head hammer (Sort of a ball peen) with a brass haft and I think a rosewood handle.

attachment.php

And lastly, a Primus 111B white gas camp stove. (Some this type are alcohol stoves) - Made in Sweden

attachment.php

Next post for the remainder of my small haul today.

On to the HS Flea and a few small pickings:

I got the Jewelers saw, 50' steel tape (leather covered case), and the AAA flashlight for $2. The saw was covered with light red surface rust, and after getting that off, I discovered its (as suspected) made in Germany (probably pre WWII) and marked HR (sort of merged).

The small 10" hacksaw is one of my favorite picks today as it is a Disston frame, and I suspect VERY old and possibly pre 1900. Four bucks.

attachment.php

The bell and stand are all brass, and was for SWMBO, who really liked it. I need to make a striker for it for her.

attachment.php

And the last of it from another lessor estate sale, a small master lock and three steel balls. The larger ones are about right for a vise handle, if not for a really large vise.

Finally, ratchets and drive tools:

1/2" ratchets by Williams, Snap-On, Craftsman (Stainless and RHFT), and unmarked.
7/16" drive ratchet by Blackhawk.

I see two ratchets that I'm very interested in!

Nice finds for free! I used to have one of those mini butane torches when I was in High school or maybe even Jr high. it worked OK for soldering structurally smaller pieces, and I have no clue where if finally got off to. probably died or I couldn't get fuel and tossed it... :dunno:

Thanks Outlaw, Yea the price was right. :D I did look up the price of the little butane cylinders. :shocking: The company even makes tiny mixed gas torches. With even more expensive small gas cylinders. I'll stick with my bernzomatic connected to the 20lb BBQ tank, MUCH cheaper.

http://72.41.12.125/microflame/torches.cfm

Wow Lots of GREAT hauls!

My day was sort of quiet. an old torch, (I've see a lot of these around, this is my first copy; is this fueled by carbide maybe?)

"Quiet" :headscrat I'd take a quiet Outlaw day, any day of the week. Killin it as usual man.

I have an old torch that was my dad's, looks very similar to that. It had two fuel cylinders, one you lit and it heated the other causing pressure to build. The torch I have runs on alcohol, like most of them I believe. I have the instructions for it if you want a scan. I don't use it much, as it resides in my keepsake box.

I love old flame torch technology, safety was such an after thought. Gas blowtorches anyone? :D

WOW, great stuff and amazing deals guys. "You ****" all around. Happy hunting.

What is the difference between a single line V code and double line V code stamped tools?

Thanks, John

I'm not sure that anyone has the answer to that question, or if they do, they're not telling. I've been trying to find out as well.

It has something to do with the change from Moore Drop Forge to Easco to Danaher.

From about 1959 to the late 60's, they used the =V= stamp :)V: for small 1/4" sockets and extensions)

Then Easco took over and from the late 60's(?) to the 80's(?) the -V- codes were used. Part numbers were added after 1974.

For a short time in the 70's(?) I think the =V= came back, but it was short lived.

After 1986 (Danaher) it switched to -G-, and it's variations. Then back to variations and combos of V.

For Craftsman date codes try this thread at the Garage Gazette :

very nice scores yesterday everyone! Loving that old Anco box!

Made 7 stops yesterday.... first and second I did pretty good:

CMan Wrenches + Sockets + Nut Drivers

5 Sockets are =V=, rest newer

one in the middle is a -V-, but never noticed one smoothed out like that... reminds me of the Bonney Streamline's

More Nut Drivers + Wrenches

Vise Grip and a Fuller imitation Visa Grip, Channelock (meadville!) and CMan pliers, and the dykes up in the top were... I forget, but made in Conn.

Stops 3-6 were a bust, nothing at all...

Stop 7, a smalled flea market that I haven't been to in a little while... Found a guy with literally 30 totes of sockets, all for cheap... and snagged these:

48 in total

19 SK's

Billings, New Britain, Bonney, Williams, Proto, Cornwell....

21 freakin =V='s! and a single -V- in the middle!

So that guy should be setting back up at that flea market right now... yea, i'll be back in a few hours with more.
