Though I am sure you are all impressed, I can not take personal responsibility for this amazing restoration I recently spotted on my local craigslist. :spit:

I've seen a few teeny examples so here's another one. Cast says "Pat June 18, 1885 H&B" From another post, this indicates the H.B. Smith Company in Mass.

Didn't get close to the $1/lb. rule of thumb. At just over 1 lb. about $25/lb. Even so, couldn't resist.

Finally got some pics of my two big vises I scored last weekend for $40 and $39, along with some pics of a few others I have.

First - the big Parker I scored for $40. I can't make out any model numbers or anything, though another GJ member told me it is a late model after United Mfg took over - it sat at 160 lbs on my scale. 6" wide jaws with double swivel lock levers.

View media item 32289
The Reed No 933 5" I picked up about an hour later, after the Parker for $39.

View media item 32290
A little blue Wilton 4 1/2" I picked up for $8, that hardly seems worth it to be honest - it seems super cheap.

View media item 32292
An old Prentiss No 3 that we've had for years. It operates amazingly smooth, a hard twist with a finger and the handle will turn 5-6 full turns.

View media item 32291
A Craftsman 5162 that I was told was made by Rock Island but renamed? Not sure if that's true or not, but picked it up for $20 outside Boise. I've sense repainted it a hammered steel color and will probably give it to my father-in-law.

View media item 32296
A little Erie vise that looks just like those Littlestown vises. It's pretty beat up, but it was a dollar.

View media item 32295
And lastly - a cute little vise that I inherited when my grandpa passed away 3 years ago, along with all of his tools. I found a little home for it on the side of the tool box. There's no markings that I can see on it.

View media item 32293
I have another one very similar to the last one, but has soft cloth faces that I got the same way. I have a little Littlestown back in Idaho still, but dont have any pics of it, but I'm sure you've all seen one of those before anyway. =)

Where are y'all finding all these little vises? I want one badly but I can't even seem to find one for an Outrageous price, much less a deal.

Sometimes you've just got to look in the right place, it's like hunting for Morrel Mushrooms, once you find one...

Those are just 2" and 2-1/2"... Well, and a 450SJ and a NOS C3 in the background.... I'm going to line them all up and see what I've got this weekend maybe...

I know I still need a 300S, an 800S and a 400SJ... At least...!

So if anyone has any of those, I will OVER TRADE to get them...

Here are a couple more "Craigslist Vise Restorations". I just saved the pictures instead of doing a screen capture like you.

Enjoy.

One in the first pic, the blue one, doesn't look too bad, wish he didn't paint the handle or the sliding surfaces on the dynamic jaw.

The one in the 2nd and 3rd pic doesn't look like it should be restored at all. Looks WAY too beat on to be a collectable vise, maybe a working one, but it's too far along in condition to even be repainted. It would be like taking a car that had been sitting in the junkyard in Louisiana for 50 years, cancer and all, and painting it with a spray can and saying you "restored" it.

PLEASE . . . . . no more **** vises in this thread . . . .
. . . . .unless you have SAVED them from the CL ***** who painted them,
. . . AND . . . are commiting to restore them.

Otherwise, those painted vises go in the WTF thread.

I'm running out of Eye Bleach !!! :bounce:

I love the way you've decorated the place. If I didn't have the wife, I'd hire your decorator in a minute. But alas, I'm still kind of fond of her, so my place will remain dull and drab. Once you get it all organized, how about one of those virtual tours. For a nominal fee of course.

Ok, I'll take the bait. I just snagged this Columbian D45 in the photographed form:

After stripping the horrid paint off, I then wire-wheel brushed it, cleaned up all the threads, coated it in Pentosin 75W80 gear oil, and re-lubricated the threads with copper anti-seize. I need to fabricate/purchase new jaws, but that's not a big deal. After seeing how it looked without the paint on it, I couldn't bear to repaint it... the brownish smudges are from the copper antiseize. It'll get another coat of oil here in a day or two.

So if someone drilled and tapped the vise jaw screw holes on a vise larger and you bought a new set of factory jaws, would it make more sense to try and use some kind of insert (helicoil?) to go back to the factory size, or drill the jaws out to allow for a larger screw?

Need help with SJ number two. This appears to be a Number 28 Prentiss Carriage Vise. I thought it could be a 26 but looking for some info I found catalog picture of a 26 and it didn't have the swivel base or 4 1/2 inch jaws. It has a 6139 on the front but I don't know these at all or if that has anything to do with identification.

Jaws are in pretty good shape but I am missing the center pen so I am hoping I can get a photo or catalog picture to see what they looked like originally. This may become my new wood vise :D

CL find and I also got a rare marked old Southern Pacific spike hammer with it :rocker:

Can anyone help me with information for this Prentiss?

Thanks,

Wes

I have a PDF of a Prentiss ad showing the no 26 swivel base. PM me your email address and I'll send it to you. It's too big to post and I can't upload it to photobucket either.

So if I send you a 300S you would trade me for that 450SJ that you obviously don't have room for

If you can get away with using a helicoil then I would. there is a good chance that you would need to use carbide to drill and counterbore out a new set of jaws if they are built hard like they should be.

I just picked up this monster Rock Island vise about an hour ago for 62.00. It has a 6" jaw
& it's a little over 25" long. I couldn't lift it by myself so I had to use the Gantry Crane. It makes my 4.5" jaw Wilton look like a baby.
