How did you decide on a monolithic slab over a pole or footer style foundation? You are in NY so you have got to get some freezing.

Price. The footers are two feet deep insulated with 1.5 Styrofoam and is to code. These are common here with no issues.

Nice build. I'm hoping to build one similar in size in the next few years. Does 2' bring your footers below your frost line? I'm a little farther north, closer to Utica, and I was told the frost line can go up to 48" into the ground up here. Haven't decided whether to go with a monolithic or just build a pole then pour a slab in it. I see on here someone did that in Buffalo and doesn't seem to have any problems with it.

The footers are insulated with 1.5" styrofoam so the frost shouldn't be an issue. This is also code where I live. The concrete guys where telling me that is very common way of doing it and had not heard of anyone having issues.

Thanks everyone. Yes, lots of BBQ and cold water/Gatorade/beer. I really appreciate all the help my friends gave me. I plan to have a party in the garage once it is all done and invite everyone that helped me. Windows, siding and epoxy on the floor before I call this complete. 84 Lumber screwed up my window sizes so now they have to have the windows custom built and won't have them till the 10th of July :(

I like the door handle. Had one at my old apartment. Really handy in the dark when you are trying to find your keys.

Man you will love that handle (keyless) I have the dead bolt style on my garage and it comes in handy sssssooooo often. I have had mine for lil over a year and everyone loves the thing, well worth it. I did put some rechargeable 2100mah batterys in it and haven't recharged them yet. Regular batteries may be worse (1000-1100mah)

Thanks for posting :3gears:

You have a nice garage and some good friends.
I was going to go with a monolithic slab stick built but building inspector (Tioga County) said 22x48 was too large for that type. I don't know what the reasoning behind that is. I also never heard of any particular problems with that type.
Key pad entry.... the only way to go. That one is nice and compact. I have the deadbolt style large ones.

Thanks. I actually installed a similar lock (just the deadbolt) on our main door and my wife and I love it! I have the one in the garage to auto lock after 30 seconds so we don't even have to remember to lock it.

Wow...great job! I had a 24" X 32" built back in '07 and I know it can be stressful at times, but it's so worth it. :)

You ain't kidding! Lots of sleepless nights making sure I didn't screw anything up. One mistake could mean the difference of saving money by doing it yourself and actually spending more than it would have to have the pros do it.

Good idea about the rechargeable batteries. Thanks!

Interesting. So you ended up doing the conventional footers/pad two pour configuration?

Any update? Post some final pics with the fascia!!

What's the plan for your interior? I've had my 26x26 with open studs and uninsulated since I moved in a year and half ago. Everybody loves that its not drywalled and that you can see the opens studs, osb and rafters, like yours. But I've gotta get it cooled down in the summer somehow. You got any plans or you leaving it as is?

I plan to insulate and drywall and lay porcelain tile down after winter to let the pad settle (freeze/thaw). I plan to have parties in here (almost like a hall) so that if something spills, it's not inside our house. I don't plan to make this a shop as I don't really work on our cars.

What did you end up having into it? Go over your 20k prediction?

Yes but I'm going above and beyond and not stopping soon lol. I'd say 25k after electric.

Got the 100 amp sub panel up, got a four 20 amp circuits laid out, one circuit for each wall. Can you count how many double gang outlets? Yes, I went overboard.

Got the lights installed. A total of 64,800 lumen. This gives me 75 lumen / sqft. A total of 768 watts. Lights up the space nicely. Used six 8 footer (which has four 48" T8 bulbs).

Awesome setup. Can't have too many lights or outlets. What's the small blue wire for?

CAT5. Going to install an airport express and extend my network. My current wifi in the garage is unreliable. Good eye.

Sorry man but that data cable won't work. Electrically. Nor is it safe or to code...

The AirportExpress can bridge to another AirportExpress. Have you tried that? Just doing it wireless?

Why won't it work? How is it not safe?

My current wireless is not reliable in the garage. I currently have a 2tb time capsule with integrated a/b/g/n. So if I try to do it wirelessly, that won't also be reliable. It will only be as good as the source.

The radio in the AirportExpress is better than in a phone, tablet or laptop. It can connect to the house more reliably. Then, your user devices can connect to the unit in the garage.

The 220VAC will cause inductance, basically like a magnetic field? Will wreak havoc on the ethernet signal. And an electrical issue on the high voltage side leaks into the low voltage side which has no ground or breaker. Will fry the low voltage stuff.

Thanks for the info. I will setup wirelessly first and test it. If it is good enough, I will leave it. If not, I'll find a new way to run the cat5 cable.
