My first score was a KRA2312 with a HF or similar side box and vice. I also got a transmission jack, 4 jack stands and a beat up 3 shelf HF cart. All for the low low price of 500 bucks. I got a ton of great tools for dirt cheap from this same guy as well but I'll keep this about the tool boxes.

It was a good box but it was just too small. 18" deep drawers ****! So when a local guy offered me 1340 cash for it I let it go. This left me working out of my old school POS Craftsman box that is normally reserved for nuts and bolts. It didn't even come close to holding all my tools and it was a mess from being used as a glorified coffee can. I had 840 profit to play with from the last box and needed to find a box sooner rather than later. Luckily I found this KR550 and KR555 stack for 460 bucks. These are now for sale and I'd be happy to make someone who needs a decent box a really good deal. The boxes are old and well used but for the cost they are well worth it. They held all my tools which was the main goal. However I really missed having a work surface and bb slides, so the hunt was on for the next deal.

This deal is by far the best but I had to work for this one. I drove 12 hours round trip but got this KRL7002 for 1100 bucks, closer to 1300 with gas but still a good buy on a box I don't ever intend to sell. It needs a new lock, liners and work top but is otherwise good to go. So at this point I'm only about 1,000 into both the KRL7002 and KR550+KR555 including gas and other expenditures to pick them up and prepare them for sale, gotta love craigslist :)

Any suggestions on where to buy drawer liner material? I purchased some really nice stuff on Ebay from Mtryan but it only comes in 24" width rolls.

Those are awesome liners and I can't say enough good things about them. I just wish I could find them in 30" widths. The 30" rolls he sells are mesh and I hate mesh linings.

wish you were closer, i like that stack.

i've been thinking of moving up to.

It really is perfect for a smaller shop setting. That stack w/ a tool cart and you are good to go. I think it's like 66" high, 36" wide and 22" deep. It holds a TON of tools in a very small footprint.

Like you, I hate the mesh liners. IMO it just gives dirt easier access to get under the lining. I recently had to find a liner for two projects. For the first, I used HF liner similar to the one in your link.

For the other liner, I went to Home Depot, my favorite place in the world [sarcasm]. The toolbox liner they sell is mesh, but I found solid Truck Box Liner that is thicker than the HF, or the one you posted.

The HF liner is ok, but the HD truck liner is much better. It's pricey (I'm a cheap b*st*rd), but worth it. It's .12" thick, as opposed to the .009" of the others.

Neither come in 30" wide, but I taped the seam underneath with Gorilla Tape to get a wider sheet. Work it so that the seam is towards the back of the drawer.

Hope this helps.

I really don't want to tape lines together. If I did end up doing that I'd just order more of the same that I did before. It's a big enough hassle to cut drawer liners to fit as it is without having to tape them together like a jigsaw puzzle. I've been talking to the SO rep about trading the 2 box stack for a work surface, drawer liners and key+lock so we'll see what we can work out.

Evan, what years were your Snap On 650/655 combo manufactured? Are they all friction slides? I have the same combo made in 1988 and they're all ball bearing except the small drawers on the top box.

If I was you, I'd seriously think about keeping the roller from that combo. I know selling just the top box is harder than selling the combo, but those boxes are high quality, no matter what kind of slides are on them.

For liners, I've used the carpet runner from Home Depot and that's worked well. Some people use thin carpet as well.

They are actually a 550 and 555 combo and are a few years older than yours. The top box is a 78 or 79 and the bottom is an 83 or somewhere around there. Both are friction slides and while they work, there is no comparison to BB slides when you have a full loaded drawer. It truly is a tank that has withstood a 30 year beating so there is no doubt it's a well built box.
