Uhhh, it would help if I could spell. That's C-A-R-R-I-A-G-E, not what I posted up in the header. Sheesh. It was just half a glass of wine....

Man I wish I had a picture of this one door....I was always fascinated by it as a kid. It was the main door for the local Jaycee club house (that my dad belonged to). It was a big HEAVY steel door that slid sideways (like a barn door) and had a big counterweight at the end that ran on a pulley setup to offset some of the weight of the door. When you opened it, the weight would drop to the floor. It had a lot of character. As a young boy, I was found anything mechanical like this very intriguing....I'll try to find a pic of one similar....

These are VERY similar to the door I am talking about.....Google refers to them as fire doors I guess.....Which would make since for it to be a fire door because of the location of it....

The doors here locally on the James River Floodwall are pretty stout.

Pudacah, KY has flood gates in the levee that rise up from underneath. Looks real nice since you don't see any of the gate until its up, when down, the gap is filled in by the top of the gate, looks like a metal strip in the pavement.

This thread is great. External designs are fun to review.

Today, we shopped and on the way home, drove past a garage with double accordian doors that happened to be open. Now that I see this thread, I'll take a picture next time we pass.

That has been a long-standing "I would soooo do this with my garage doors if it were anywhere close to reasonable."

Paint magic.

Abandoned building entryway of stucco and river rock, painted white, cottage door with 9 windowlights over two vertical panels. Outside of Yancyville, NC. My first reaction was, "They should have left the rock unpainted", but that would be what was expected.

Look again more closely. The white transforms the entryway to complexity that I appreciate the more I study the contrasting textures. Note the subtle interplay between the river rock, the convex motar joints, and the stucco surface. Sometimes the unexpected can surprise, especially here with the monochromatic idea of the entryway.

Dunno. I doubt the former owner gave it that much thought. What do you think?

At the opposite end of the spectrum is this house. I would not have thought this house/gable end/garage door coordinated with the roof and foundation paint scheme would work, but I kind of like it.

And yet, maybe too much, a little too contrived. What do you think? Downtown Knoxville, TN.

And sometimes you end up with very pleasing color results, not due to careful thought or anything else other than time and the elements. Door inset on a door. Note the contrasting but subdued colors due to weather and wear.

Handsome. Doesn't need a thing, because it can't be improved. Garage door happenstance still-life.

Wow, who would have thought?

Think you've seen these garage doors before? Probably have, since the building has been used in many ads over the years. Richmond is a hotbed of advertising firms and this entrance is a very popular setting for film and print. Westover Hills, Richmond.

Garden shed doors. Note the strap hinges and the unusual recessed horizontal panel at the door's waistline. I've never run across that configuration before.

See post 11, first picture, door and window. The relationship to each other at the front of a garage or other structure. It's a formula we see again and again. It's just what feels right to us.

Five panel early 20th century door and entranceway. The bold headers on the window and the door convey a feeling of substance and security. No trim around the door or window jambs, further emphasizing the heft of the header.

This landowner is constantly hounded to rent the modest little building. Little wonder.

Do you know the brand and rough cost of this door?

Front door entranceway, New South dancehall, Eastern NC, HiWay 70 East. Note the Christmas lights and the sign. It advises that shoes and shirt are required, but teeth are optional. No joke.

"I keep my Christmas lights up
On my front porch all year long.
And I know all the words to every
Charlie Daniels song.
So here's to all my sisters
Keepin' it country.
Let me get a big 'Hell yeah!'
For the redneck girls like me."

Nope, not dying at all, just on a little vacation. We attended a wedding on Block Island, RI. Here is the door to the storage shed at one of the several lighthouses on the island, the light on Mohegan Bluffs.

Note the strap hinges for the doors. New, not shop forged, but still a nice touch.

Brand, new garage with very handsome doors in the parking lot beside the island liquor store. You never know where you might find some interesting doors.

Just knocking around Newport, RI.

Doors to the Yacht Restoration School, a very interesting place. Love to take some classes there.

Dunno what to think about these - just a standard flush face woody - with a bit of baseboard / trim, added for visual interest(?).

Brad, I don't know. They are on a Morehead City, NC garage that is as faithful a reproduction as I've ever seen.

Anybody?
