Who Made This Old Tool Box & When

[Bib Overalls]

My friend Barry was cleaning out the shop on his family place and rediscovered this tool box. It belonged to his father and may have belonged to his grandfather.

It is very well made and quite heavy. It is hard to imagine anyone picking it up when it is full of tools.

The fold out top trays have lids that can be locked in place with a wire slider. The bottom has three reinforcing bands.

The manufacturer's tag is missing. Can anyone tell us who made it and when?

I have the same box, I think it's called a Kennedy cantilever .I'll check if I remember.

Kennedy Cantilever. That was quick. Now I just need to find out when it was made.

It looks more like a Simonsen to me. They had the horizontal ribs.

I just went out to look. I guess I could be wrong about it being a Kennedy.
It has a pressed in letters in the front that read Simonsen metal product co, contract #.
My dad gave it to me, & he was in the Navy in the 60's. Could of came from there.

Here's the only pic I can find of mine. It usually rides in the back of my Jeep and you're right, they are very heavy when loaded. If I recall correctly Simonsen had a government contract to supply toolboxes. Sometimes on ebay you'll see a very similar Simonsen fishing tackle box. It had a different arrangement of drawer dividers.

I think you (and the others) are right.

Barry's box has rounded corners. All of the Kennedy boxes I found with a search have square corners.

Did a search on Simonset tool boxes and found several examples from the WWII/Korea era that are almost identical.

It's no Kennedy, more than likely a Simonsen as said, possibly a Grip Latch.
