This thread is a big part of what's kept me addicted to this site for the past few months, so I hate to see it go quiet for so long. Here are a couple pics that came out of organizing of my 2 car that was mostly inspired by things I saw on here.

The first one is very simple, but I don't recall seeing it anywhere: hanging tape holder. Bought 100' of that 1/4" cotton rope for $10 just because I never had light duty rope laying around when I wanted some, now I find little uses for it constantly.

Next is my version of the over-the-overhead-door rack. The upside of using the pre-drilled/slotted angle is I was able to go from concept to done without taking a single measurement. The downside is it didn't force me to measure anything, so the back end of the rack is about 6" wider than the front. Oh well, doesn't affect its functionality. Bought $50 in materials, but I only ended up using about $35 worth.

Found a simple way to store my MagLites. Wanted to have them convenient to the garage door. Inexpensive and works great.

Assuming you used a 2x2 or something similar to nail the peg board to, just screw them in to that area since it useless for putting pegs through anyway.

Hmmm, I wonder if I could weld that flashlight holding...thing.... to something that would mate with pegboard? Great idea, thanks!

You should be able to take some pegboard hooks that are long and reform then to fit the maglight. Cover the hooks with a little bit of shrink tube to protect the lights.

a little spendy aren't they....
If the tilt bins are too spendy, you might prefer Stack-On bins. The cases and bins are plastic but they come in a variety of drawer sizes. I picked up two 60-drawer bins and two 39-drawer bins:

With shipping, total cost was $64 for 198 storage bins. They don't come with drawer dividers, which seems to upset a lot of buyers. I sprung another $12 for 16 large and 48 small dividers. I don't know if it's the cheapest source but I ordered mine from Mills Fleet Farm. http://www.fleetfarm.com/category/tools/tool-storage/hardware-boxes-bins

Turn the cabinet around and look on the backside. Some of them have snap out dividers molded in to the back. Of course there won't be enough. I think mine had like 6 or so on the back.

Do they mount to the wall?

Always been one of my favorite threads. Posted the below in my build thread.

Had a few minutes and a hankering to tinker in the shop. No extra funds for anything big- just a quick no-cost solution to a nagging problem.

Table saw is stored in the cabinet. It has horizontal space, so naturally things get piled on it, and getting it out for a job becomes a job on its own. This is a very clean view. Normally there is a bunch more on top of it.

Some spare wood, 2 cuts and viola. Problem solved.

Now the saw is easy to get in and out without moving a bunch of ****.

Thinking about doing the same with the grinder, but under my workbench.

No mine doesn't spin. I have others around the shop for air and extension cords.

This is the thread that brought me to this great forum. It's about time I posted some stuff of my own:

DSC09104.JPG

This is a shelf I built with 2x4s and plywood, tied to the wall studs in back

DSC09105.JPG

Cheap metal kitchen cabinets from craigslist

DSC09071.JPG

Cheap easy to build shelves. Just cheap chipboard for shelves and sides, tied together with 2x4s in every corner. 2x4s screwed to the wall studs keep it on the wall. I built the frame on the floor then picked it and hung it on the 2x4s on the wall. Tapered shape lets me park a car close to it. Note use of a U-shaped rake/broom holder to hold shop vac hose.

Simple angle steel book shelves collect misc junk and keep it off the workbench. Bench is an old door covered with 1/8" thk steel set on old kitchen cabinets.

I use U-shape broom/rake holders for hammers and the like. the rubbermade bin on the right is great for screws and nails and such. the binds tilt down at 45 degrees and the whole things comes off the wall to carry elsewhere

I'm still trying to get my garage organized. I've added several storage things but seem to haul **** home quicker than I can expand storage. Ultimate goal is to get two cars in here...ha!

General "Feel" For The Situation:

Built Cabinets For The Front Wall:

My Workbench Now:

My Workbench Then:

My intent was to get everything up off the floor and on the walls or in cabinets (except machines, large items) so I have focused a lot of time on storage, but it is never enough.

Here is the best one I have of it. It's a Walker-Turner 1200 series drill press that I found on Craigslist.

That's cool! I restore the old woodworking machines rather than buying Chinwanese junk. The old stuff has such cool design lines. Any idea as to what year that is?

Thanks. I believe it's 1955-ish. This is sort of a Frankenstein, the model number says it was part of a gang setup, and when I bought it it had a smaller diameter column that was sleeved up to the right size, and another table as the base. I was able to locate the correct base and column for it later on.

I much prefer older equipment as long as it's not worn out. The old stuff has a lot more iron in it, and is just nicer to use and look at.

I don't know if you have checked out owwm.org but if you need parts, info or anything for old machines, you can probably find it there. Also have a For Sale section for buying & selling.

I just put this up Monday night (crappy Blackberry photo, apologies in advance)

towelrackoncleats-20110216-142623.jpg

I really like the Gladiator GarageWorks stuff, but I decided that $14 for 4' of track just doesn't do it for me. So I picked up a 6' 1x3 at Menards for like $6 and using the rip fence on my cordless circsaw cut about a 3/16" channel in the top of it. Works perfect.

For the towel holder, since it has both upper and lower hooks, I cut a scrap piece of 1x4 and used it for the lower piece. That also allowed me a place to run a short construction screw in, which "locks" the thing to the tracks, so it can't jump off, no matter how you screw with it. I've got 4' of my "track" left to hang up to hang snow shovels from now...will try to snag pictures of the finished product...

I'd really like to see some detail pics of this.

I fixed the image url in my original post. check it out! I ended up making a full 6' piece to hold shovels and brooms etc. Much easier to make using a table saw, which i didn't have when I made the first piece :)

Sadly, I think you may have deleted your post when you fixed the url.

So many amazing ideas in this thread. I'm just getting started with my garage and slowly getting organized. Here's my contribution... The 2 wall cabinets came out of a friend of mine's paint shop. He used to test his paint guns on the outside of them so I gave them a quick coat of gray. The tall shelves are industrial units made by Lyon Workspace. The same friend gave them to me after a storage room/modular office was torn down where he works. There is also now a third set of shelves up that are not pictured.

The garage is not done yet, but these are the soffit cabinets that I built to keep things from getting dusty and covered with over spray when I have a project going.
