Need 12mm wrench recommendation

I need a suggestion on a long handle 12mm box end wrench (12pt), preferably a double box with 10mm & 12mm ends. Needs to be fairly sturdy, as I will be using it primarily to remove 12pt 12mm bolts from Ford 8.8 pinion driveshaft flanges out of Ford Explorers, which can be a PITA to remove.

I typically like to use a 3/8" breaker bar with a shallow 12pt 12mm socket, but sometimes the driveshafts prevent this setup from fitting...hence the need for a strong 12mm box end wrench. Most of these are pulled from salvage yards, so it can be hit or miss whether the transmissions are in place or if the E-brakes are functioning. Accordingly, sometimes the box wrench or breaker bar setup will have to be jammed into the underside of the vehicle to keep the shaft/flange assembly from rotating.

Any suggestions on a 12mm double box wrench? One with a 10mm end would be perfect, as it can be used to break loose stubborn caliper bolts. I'd considered simply cutting a 12mm Craftsman socket in half, then TIG welding it into the face of a box ended 5/8" wrench, which would give me the strength of the larger wrench with the benefits of a very shallow 12mm socket. Plus, I could always cut off the open end of the 5/8" wrench, making it easier to fit a cheater bar for really stubborn flange bolts (and make it easier to wedge into place to keep the assembly for rotating).

SNAP-ON XBM1214A

An outstanding excellent wrench.

EDIT:

If you want a 10mm on one end, get the XBM1012A.

i have used my serpentine belt tool, which is flat stock steel with a 3/8 square on the end and low profile socket to fit in spots like that. got all the extra leverage you could need too.

just a thought.

as for wrenches, take your pick from any of the good brands. although i might consider a 0degree offset extra long wrench like the matco pro swings, or the zero degree offset DBs, or the GW gearbox. all are long and double box. all have atleast one side that is non-ratcheting. most have the socket like protrusion also, which is very useful IMO

You're correct, I believe a 0* offset would be the best option. The Gearwrench looks very appealing, and will probably suit my needs quite well.

Or maybe two separate GW long pattern wrenches. I love mine and have never had a problem with them. Specifically just used the 12mm to brake loose lines on a master cylinder two weeks ago. No problems at all. Id recommend anything from gearwrench.

In that case, you can go with the XDHFM1012.

The problem ive had with useing the sepentine belt tools is the square drive is weak. Twists right off under heavy load. Id recomend the snap on zero offset double box for this application. Lifetime warrenty even though u wont need it. Unless u put a cheater on it then one day u might need it.

Sounds like what you are after. I would imagine he would sell you a pair of the 10/12 if you asked.

The OTC serp belt tool does not utilize the square drive with the low profile sockets

I have a couple of those Mac wrenches and I like them alot. I also have the xbm605a set of 10 degree offset wrenches from snap-on. I agree with you and think that the long zero offset is the way to go for what you want. Saving some money on these blems might be nice incase it gets misplaced out in the salvage yard.

I jus got 2 sets of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251315521006?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
and another used set in a different ebay sale that was posted in the hot deals section. Im a Snap On guy but Ill never argue with a good deal, especially for any brand professional tool. The seller also told me in a email that he has other sizes for sale too, You can message and see.

Jus rechecked his sales and looks like he posted a new sale: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251315521006?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Have you looked at the ezred ratcheting flex wrenches unless you would need the clearance of the box style I know Cornwell and Matco both offer double in those sizes where snap on will be more expensive

Huh, that would be perfect to use with the battery powered impact!
