Beautiful job. Salvaging the decal really adds to the character.

Hello again vise friends,

Attached is a Wilton #111218 mechanics combo vise that I just finished. It has 5" jaws, 6" opening, 3 3/4" depth, and weighs 43 pounds. This is the first vise that I had to press the handle straight. Attached are the before and after pictures.

Had a good trip to the green mountain area of new york, brought back 1250 lbs. of safety blue and some black. The black base is 1" plate 24"x36" with 4" square tubing welded for fork truck moving. The vise is bolted to a machined casting 25" tall, 21" diameter at bottom and 16" diameter at the top. I believe the vise was cast 5 18 85, from what i read on the one side of it. Enjoy!

That vise was shown here before and the price paid by the poster was $199 for such a nice and heavy set up. Were you the OP? If not, how much did you pay for the vise?

For that price it was a real steal and a you ****!

I bought it off ebay, paid $199.00 and picked it up while visiting a friend in greenville ny. Yes it was a good deal. Grandson jaxryder.

I want to thank Mark for giving me the opportunity to rescue the last of the vises from Golden. The sale price is between Mark and myself. Let's say I feel very lucky and like someone wrote a while back I can not **** my self. I have spent 2-1/2 days making room in my small shop and recording what model number and what repairs were done on these 34 vises. I will do my best to record and list the spare parts from this collection on a website as time permits. Benchvisejaws.com
With some creativity I can salvage about 1/3 of these vises over the Winter. I will be building custom jaws to fix some heavily damage and welded jaw area's. I can not scrap a 6" wide jaw vise if I can fix it. Yea it will not be worth as much but wouldn't someone use a 6 or 7" swivel jaw refurbished. These vise's will last someone many years of use. Most of these vises are brazed, welded and broken but the spindles, Static jaw support's, Spindle nuts, Swivel bases, swivel jaws and numerous pieces and parts can be salvaged. Thanks to all you guy's for getting me into a new career. My back is sore.

Wrenchguy - That is so sweet! I still can't believe someone listed that monster on eBay for only $200!!! I'm glad it went to a good home! If it wasn't clear across the country for me I would of bought it when I saw it! You definitely deserve a "You ****" and probably got the deal of the year!

Mr. Scott - Whatever you paid, one still has to consider all the countless hours of labor that will go into repairing and salvaging. But in the end I'm sure what is worth-while will find a good home, and that is the most important part, saving a piece of history.

So this might be a dumb question but... has anyone gone on vacation and bought a vise and was able to carry it on the plane with you home??? Not sure how it would work getting it through security.

Im on vacation and very tempted to check the local Craigslist for a vise...

I've done it with plenty of military gear. Heavy iron sometimes. I just box it/ crate it and check it in. I always buy stuff out of town either on work or vaca...it makes for a cool story. :thumbup:

EDIT: and depending on size, mailing it back to yourself in USPS flatrate may be even cheaper. it's like 11 bucks for a medium box and 15 for a large??? Lot less headache then airport security too.

Yep he's right, USPS flatrate boxes are a great deal if you've got something heavy and it'll fit. be sure to add good packing and reinforcing of the box because something heavy could tear a box apart if you don't.

Filson - You ****! Yeah that Reed weighs about 100lbs more than the Ridgid/Columbian.

Wrenchguy - I looked at the side of my Ridgid, where yours has the 51885 mine has in a different text size "D031"... *shrug*

The part I really noticed was how thin the vise base is (not the swivel, just the bottom of the static part of the vise base) on the Ridgid. I'd put that big Reed on that sweet base, other that two different guys own them... Maybe they could work out a custody agreement...

Good God the mammoths have com to spawn:shocking:!! I want to add my beast to the list. I actually had to use all five fingers of my right hand (I'm a southpaw:rocker:) in order to load into my truck. It's my first Simplex (No. 400), and I scored it for $6. It's in a molasses bath right now.

OK, this was never suppose to happen. I finally sold and loaded out the last of 100 + vises this past week in Golden. Some small, some medium, and some monsters. Through it all, I kept thinking, "why the heck was my late friend in to these pieces of iron?"
It must be a virus that comes from touching or seeing an old vise in a dirty garage or back room, because I found myself doing the unthinkable. Yes, fellow vise-a-ronies, I came home and Looked in CRAIGSLIST for a good deal on a vise!

They never belonged to me, I was just obligated to sell them for the remaining family member. I could have named my own price and walked away with any or all of them I wanted, but that wouldn't be fair to the family. The deal I signed up for was to sell them at the highest and most reasonable price I could get. Any other way would have been a HUGE conflict of interest. Kinda like our Senators voting a pay raise for themselves. :rocker:

I hear ya, ya dun good ! :bowdown:
I do similar things as well (not quite at that level though), I've always had trouble taking money from people just for helping out. That's why I needed a partner when I used to work for myself. His job was to keep me from starving.

Still, I don't think I could have walked away empty handed. If only to have something to remember it all by. I would have had to find some way to come up with good cash for one of the monsters.
